How about this? You have a standard room-full-of-pipes flyby scene, but then when the camera reaches one point, the wall it's looking at abruptly turns into a spikey ball object (that zooms back away from the wall) with the shot of the wall at that point mapped on it, such that right at that moment you're looking at the spikey ball at the right angle so you can't tell the difference. The viewer would see a 3D wall turn into a 2D texture on an object abruptly.

Ods: If you download a recent version of acdsee, it has some good resize options. One is to resize with 'spline' method, works pretty good for gif files.
