could NGSCB/TC/TPM hurt demomaking in the future ?

category: general [glöplog]
NGSCB is that infamous ex-Palladium MS implementation of the TC (Trusted Computing) concept, based on TPM chips.

people have been sold TPM chips on their mobos for a few years now, in the name of security (through data encryption and vista bitlocker marketing), the next windows version (maybe in 2010) will probably feature a full NGSCB and then the whole system could be locked up through a forced licence and signature scheme to run any code, although this worst case is unlikely thanks to the induced internet uproar and the competition of open systems.

however i suspect that the future full-featured versions of visual studio could drive developers to such a licence system through the increasing limitations of the non-NGSCB way...

i don't mention the other scenes (cracking, gamehacking) who will obviously suffer from NGSCB. Will the demoscene be hurt also ?

it's never late to protest, a PC owner should remain the master of his own machine, of the running processes.

Let's hope that until then Linux' GPU drivers are good enough to move the scene over... that'll give us at least another five years until Linux is finally outlawed. </tinfoil>

That will be cracked in less time that's needed to say it anyways.
That kind of bullshit is at the same level than those DRM things, and will be put aside as well.

Well the scene will move to Linux or Amiga in April 2009 when MS dumps support for windows XP.

what now?

irokos: for once i'm pessimistic about the cracking of such a protection, because it's deeply dependent of the hardware, unless some chinese or russian people produce some open TPM-compatible modchip, or some hackers code a universal TPM emulator, but that would also probably need the leak of some 'universal' keys from the safes of MS or TPM manufacturers...

Yeah, that's gonna happen. Let's kill all the small developers and freeware programmers.

Not.

zest, would you *please* stop all the completely off topic crap on pouet? we don't care about your opinion on platforms or companies. we care about demos. the problem is that you *don't* care about demos. you're on the wrong site. go to some gamer place.

You could always do windows stuff with XNA ;)

the_Ye-Ti: sure, keep your blinkers, feel comfortable in your old habits, talk about any random demo or rather just thumb it up/down, and above all do not think outside the box! the box is enough lovely filled with entertaining cubes.

let's forget those TPM chips are already in our machines, ready for what? nothing of course, let's forget this TC revolution could radically change 30 years of microcomputer hobbyism, let's forget no newschooler will ever scream any nextgen platform, because, guess what, those are already implementing their own TC principles, bye-bye the scene on them, but it's all good, good for business, those smelly hippie hobbyists can die! \:-)/

yes, i also trust that there will be modchips that will enable to workarround this. in the worst case, i dont need GPU drivers to do raytracing on linux. ^^
I will miss my ms visual studio though, it's such a good and professional tool compared to that emacs + gcc crap. Too bad there isn't anything better yet than emacs on linux. I've tried out many crap, nothing beats it.

This topic demonstrate how much pouet BBS sucks...

It's impossible to talk seriously about something more than one page before stupid picture appears.

I don't know why people are so sure it will be cracked instantly. The PS3 protection is still uncracked, for example, and even if it could be cracked, just the fact that there's a non-trivial protection in place is a serious deterrent towards hobbyist tinkering, especially for beginners. Anyway, discussing this particular issue isn't very fruitful until details are known; as of now there's a lot of speculation and dubious claims as to how future platforms will work when it comes to trusted computing.

rez: read this tread again and highlight all the seriousness, THEN post your complaint!
https://www.trustedcomputinggroup.org/about/members/ those TCG members are so insignificant, let's laugh at them!

btw keops: sometimes i'm about to think that an 'embedded' oldschool scener isn't in the rightest place to really care about the free spirit of the demoscene.
