Actually, my question may have been answered before, let me read back a bit before I post.

I still have my doubts with this whole en devour. How awesome and helpful NVidia may seem, they are still a big company and have to have some other motivations next to 'we really like the scene and want to help, yay!'.

Well, you are of course free to see sinister motives where you feel like it. :) But here, let me do my bit to try to put the unrest to rest ("may I suggest"). This is what people participating in the compo are asked to answer YES or NO to when they submit their entry:

Terms of distribution
Because the size of the event it would be inevitable for us to distribute the productions in certain ways. Due to the non-commercial nature of the event, however, we'd like to offer you to pick your own custom distribution choices. Please select answers to all of the questions, it helps our work greatly. (Also please note that these are only possibilities, they do not imply that they will actually happen.) All of the situations in question imply proper and throughout crediting where possible.

1. Museums
Would you allow NVScene organizers to provide video captures to museums, such as the San Francisco Digital Arts gallery for NVScene related exhibitions?

2. Hardware demo
Would you allow NVIDIA to present your demo as a benchmarking example on exhibited hardware in a commercial environment? If you answer "yes" to this question, we will contact you personally about the terms of agreement after the event.

3. Press reels
Would you allow parts of your demos' video captures to be used in press video montages? (TV reports of NVISION, etc.)

4. Hardware bundle
Would you allow your demos' binaries to be distributed with software packages bundled to NVIDIA hardware? (Driver CD's, etc.) If you answer "yes" to this question, we will contact you personally about the terms of agreement after the event.

Two of those options (point 2 and point 4) leads to further discussion directly between NVIDIA and the participant, and NVIDIA does NOT have the right to do those things without the express permission of the participant. Pretty crystal clear :) Actually, it was us (the organizers from the scene) that wanted point 4 in there, because we recognize this as a BRILLIANT way to reach a new audience, and we hope that all of you people participating opt in on this option.

Participants would also agree to the terms listed in the rules or course: http://nvision.scene.org/rules/
Quote:
* The organizers reserve the right to remove entries from competitions. These entries won't be shown, won't be spread and won't be eligible to be voted for.
* Previously released material is not allowed. Covers, remixes and derivative works can only be entered with the consent of the original author. That includes Rob is Jarig!
* By entering, you agree on having your works to be distributed on various websites and FTP spaces (including, but not limited to Scene.org, the NVISION and NVScene websites), as well as an after-event press kit. (Always with proper crediting, of course.)

Reading parts 1 through 4 made me wet. Especially part 4, since that's exactly the way I found the demoscene. I hope it comes to happen.

(I loaned a GUS driver CD from a friend because it had some shareware games on it, watched Crystal Dreams II and was hooked for life).

part 4 doesn't necessarily depend on nvidia though, given that nvidia is not an actual hardware manufacturer - but that's politics out of our range.

also, i guess having some demos on nvidia.com might be a nice thing.

Well, "other" motives really don't have to be sinisters I guess?

That bundling is a great idea indeed btw.

irokos: this whole "oh it's all so 1337, it's so unfair" attitude stinks. it really irritates me.
the scene is fair. you make something good, and maybe along the way you earn some of the benefits that come with it - like compo prizes, or a ticket to enter something like the intel compo. yes, i said earn.
"1337ness" isnt an exclusive club where you need to know the right handshake and pay the membership fee to get in. everyone has the chance if they make something good. whats stopping those who aren't in it is time, effort, skill, experience and talent, not money and hardware.
whats the flip side? "i deserve a demobox more because ive done nothing good whatsoever!"? "the prizes in the compo should be for the shittest demo!"? no. it's like me showing up at real madrid and demanding to be put in the first team immediately, and when they say no going "its not fair! football is so elitist! if they put me in the first team im sure i'd get a lot better as a player!".

Smash, didn't i say twice that i understood it all wrongly and thus why i was sorry and still am for having said that?

irokos: but you posted the same kind of thing on the intel compo thread a few weeks ago, so i thought it was your general opinion.

Smash: yeah, because the preselection was kinda hard. That's it. It's not my general opinion.

Remember that some (if not many) demoboxes were given to secondary team member as well, i.e several boxes have been given for a single entry if I am not misinformed.
considering the amount of discussion about boxes, i fear another tidal wave of flatshaded cubeshitz demos
added on the 2008-05-21 18:11:06 by havoc havoc
True, we can probably make it 40.

Then after removing the despisable ones who will just get away with a free box without producing anything, we might indeed end up with 30 entries.

10 for the 4k compo, 20 for the demo compo. Sounds good :)

graga, you are misinformed. read gloom's post about it a few pages back; way more groups than demoboxes, so they spread them out over groups. means 1 box per group max.

skrebbel : they need "a cup" by the way. You probably are the right person to design one, a special one ;)

hahahahaha :D
at least now I'm not "committed" heh. I'll still try, I 'wasted' time on this demo I might as well finish it.
Let's see if we really do get 80 demos.
