What's RA / nooon doing nowadays?
category: general [glöplog]
Archmage: I agree on the technique thing, and pretty much on the whole copying thing (and I was into the scene way back then, but not in any way active). Luckily, I never liked vallejo pics anyway ;)
Aside from some of the worse copies (and having looked at a few recently, I'm fairly convinced that some WERE actually scans - no way can I respect somebody who just cleans up a scan and signs it with their name! I guess that's a tiny minority anyway), what I think is wrong is when everyone clearly thinks that the pixeller was responsible for the original drawing too, and they don't make it clear that they weren't. That was what I was trying to say.
Anyway, there's plenty of old pics that really were 'original', at the very least the logos. And lately I think the standard of 'scene art' is getting way higher too (please don't tell me the art in the last asd demo was copied pixel by pixel =)

Hehe, no worries. Just PS, wacom and my own sick head there. ;)
Considering the time spent to do life correctly, you must recognize time as passed as it always do !
I suppose this thing is more or less comparable to orchestra playing Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart and so forth, trying to copy the original piece. The real difference is that everyone knows who they're copying and that the orchestra is not trying to hide (again, I'm not accusing Ra of anything) the fact that they copied somebody's original work.
Look, I can see the meaning of trying to gain some skills by copying, but I will always think it would have been way cooler, if the "graphicians" of the early nineties would have focused more on using their newly gained skills for creating original pieces, instead of presenting the copies.
Having said all, I would prefer judging a scener on what he/she is doing nowadays - hence, not based on the 'good old days', where probably most of us used copying at some point....

What a lot of the ignoramuses here don't get is that oldskool graphic artists INVENTED new ways of painting on computers. They came up with pixelling, texturing, smoothing and colour mixing and a whole lot more. In those times, it took a lot of clever thinking to overcome colour and resolution barriers, so there was a lot of innovation in oldskool painting.
In fact, it made sense to copy graphics because it showed how close they could get to the original, how photorealistic they could get using their innovative drawing techniques.
Do you think coders invented cubes? Of course not, but they invented their own ways of displaying cubes on a computer. Oldskool gfxers were the same breed.

This supports my point.
Yet according to the logic of "arty Poueteers" the whole Crysis engine is pointless and amateur!

Shane: for the love of God, don't go there. we already had the Xenusion vs Keops match at Bitfellas, don't bring it to Pouet ground! :O
ahahaha yeah show yourself Xenusion, let's talk about stuff ! \o/ ;)
Xenusion did not even give me a key to try it :(
I've seen it and it's really nice btw, good work Xenusion :)

Shane: the logic of "arty Poueteers" may apply to Crysis in fact : the game may be technical and beautiful and smooth and fun, it's clearly NOT original, the story about alien invaders sounds like a bad hollywood B-movie, the jungle and alienship environments are deja-vu, etc... Farcry was already a joke on the scenario side, copying SiN, DooM, SoF and many hollywood clichés :/
If you care about creative atmosphere, look for a masterpiece like Bioshock :p even the standard UT3 engine is used by Irrational Game artists in a creative way to render an immersive dripping world :)

heh keops you can now get a release 3 beta key by yourself :p
Zest: 3 weeks ago it was not the case
i may be a bit dishonest, Bioshock recycles a lot of system shock elements (and it was advertised as system shock 3), but it is still a deep original game :p
is there a link to Ra gallery around? His webpage is almost empty.
