Leave the Brain

category: general [glöplog]
In late Novemeber I plan on holding a demo outreach on the NAIT campus in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. But it's important to note that this event is more significant than simply entertaining college students with scene productions.

If this show is successful, I will receive assistance in using NAIT campus as the location for a planned Summer 2004 demo party tentatively named "Leave the Brain 2004." Needless to say, I intend to do all I can to ensure the outreach creates a lasting impression.

The first to-do is compile a "playlist." Below is the temporary agenda of 16 demos and 8 intros in viewing order. Feel free to give any input you wish. (I will be emailing each group for permission in a week or two.)

----------

Demos

1. The Popular Demo -- Farbrausch
2. 32 Degrees in the Shade -- Yodel
3. ix -- Moppi Productions
4. Black 2000 -- Farbrausch

5. Protozoa -- Kewlers
6. Run Away Responsible Remix -- Pipidemic
7. Raw Confessions -- Cocoon
8. Glitch -- Kewlers

9. Heart-shaped Box -- Haujobb
10. Medium -- einklang.net
11. Gerbera -- Moppi Productions
12. 0010 1010 -- F.A.N.

13. Dreamchild -- ASD
14. Halla -- Moppi Productions
15. Komiset Avaruus Sienet -- Haujobb
16. I Feel Like A Computer -- Melon Design

Intros

1. Leeko -- Fit
2. Ordered Superset -- Bypass/Kolor
3. Crionics We Are -- Crionics
4. Breakpoint 2003 -- Farbrausch

5. Project Genesis -- Conspiracy
6. Poem to a Horse -- Farbrausch
7. Heaven 7 -- Exceed
8. Candytron -- Farbrausch

----------

Beyond this, I am starting drafts for two successive school newspaper articles. (Screenshots too.) The publication is weekly and distributed to a campus of 17 000 full-time and 45 000 part-time students.

The article help I need is in regard to "famous video games" made by sceners. It has been mentioned that TBL worked on Tomb Raider. Is this true? Any others? I ask because this will make a suitable attention-getting opener for an audience of 100% demo-unware people. (Although it's not a topic I intend to dwell upon.)

I also intend to create decent handouts for show night. (It'll be in a theatre equiped with an LCD projector.)

Blah blah blah...
"famous video games made by sceners"

I think you need to show some Fearmoths demos!! :)

But seriously now I think you could pick a wider variety of demos. What about Kasparov, Planet Loop or Relais, or a Fairlight, MFX, Excess or Silents demo in the mix? I think at least one Visualice demo would be a good idea too cos it shows a design/art side of demos (Liquid Wen or Elements I'd say!). And you could include something like Easter Egg or Glon to show the entertainment side of demos.

But its a cool idea. Bring us more Canadian sceners!!!

Oh and "Leave the Brain" is a even worse name than "The Mudguards"! :)

the brain ...

has left the building
thom: atleast it might be worth mentioning all the games alex evans (statix/lionhead^acme^psychic link) has been involved in. Make sure not to forget Black&White ;)

What about Max Payne? Wasn't that made by a bunch of Finnish ex-sceners?

Sword of Sodan
Battle squadron
kusama/excess: Yeah, Black & White might be a good one to mention.

legalize: I've heard rumours to that effect. Can anyone confirm?

At any rate, I probably only need two or three (famous) titles. It's just going to be used as the introductory sentence or two in an attempt to capture reader attention. (Ya know, familiarity and all that stuff.)

Ultimate Gas: I kinda see-sawed back and forth on Planet Loop. Kasparov is too long and too boring for Joe Canadian. Liquid Wen is good, but too long. (I'd like everything under five minutes.) Elements should definitely be in there. I'll cut out "I Feel Like A Computer" due to it's ripped musical content and replace with Elements. (Probably need to adjust the order too.)

I was thinking of breaking up the Demo and Intro portions with "Retribution."

Hum-dee-dumb...
Ultimategas: Right, and "The Carebears" was a great name for a group...

Purple Motion was also writting music for many games.
Also, Epic Megagames has a lot of sceners. Musics from Unreal/Tournament games are XM and many written from sceners (I think I had found one tune from Skaven in there)

Generally, it's not uncommon to find sceners inside software companies. It's the natural way to go.

I don't know how tiring for the audience, the techno demos that show always the same things, will be. Like Glitch, Medium or 0010 1010 but anyways, it's just me and my personal preferences, there must be any demo for every taste. Perhaps some heavy tripping guys might like them.

Also, I like Variform much better than Protozoa. It has such an attitude to make the audience go wild! Also, a significant deformation near the Cranium will rule too imho.

Will be great this show to have access and one more demoparty to be organised in the other side of the Atlantic!

Housemarque has some old sceners http://www.housemarque.com/index_flash.html (Transwordl Snowboarding, Supreme Snowboarding, Stardust). Other games including work by old sceners are for example Rally Trophy and Death Rally.
Digital illusions? Team 17?

Good luck with the event anyway! And good luck getting that party organised too. What could be a nice idea, is to make a cd with some demos on (or use demoshow or whatever), add an advert for the event mentioning the party (including that there will be compos with prizes). Burn a shit load of cds and distribute them around the IT/arts/media areas. That's a sure way of getting some interest from the right areas I think.

legalize, thom: yes, at least reward/complex, frank/orange, ...

knos: it featured at least mr. sex/byterapers, tob/byterapers, sivu/byterapers, ...

dafred: death rally was made by remedy, what's your point :)

speaking of housemarque, here's an underrated classic developed by terramarque, the predecessor of housemarque (prior to the merge of terramarque and bloodhouse, the latter of which were the creators of e.g. the stardust series):
http://ale.emuunlim.com/reviews/elfmania.htm
it featured (at least, as far as i can remember):
saviour/complex
tai-pan/complex
golem/whatever (cncd?)
heatbeat/cncd
prime premium/cncd
(?) dean/cncd
