Attention Radeon users
category: general [glöplog]
We are trying to sort out what goes wrong in the party version of the Legomania demo so if you could take a moment and run these test programs:
http://www.multi.fi/~mbc/dsd/
we would be very thankful. There is a readme.txt file in there with some instructions.
For reference:
System 1: Pentium3 600MHz, GeForce2 MX 32 MB
System 2: Pentium4 2.5 GHz, GeForce4 Ti 4200 128 MB
The tests run at the following speeds (with the default resolution):
Thank you,

i've mailed the results to you! please let us know if you've found the reason for such a bad performance.
done the same.
I suspect the reason for the huge disparity in performance is that the OGL implementation selects a software path for the rendering technique they've selected.
isnt that always the reason why opengl is slow on some machines and not others?
Without glow: 200FPS

Your rendertarget code must be screwy :P

3D: 137 fps. looks like screenshot.
3D_Glow: 33 fps. looks NOT like screenshot - background is screwed and glow texture is static in the front.
3D_Glow_RTT: "There was an unknown exception thrown in this application, probably originating in the demopaja core..."
running windows and fullscreen, radeon monility 9000, pentium m 1.3 ghz.

Pentium IIIm 800 MHz, ATI Rage Mobility M4 32mb
Test 1: between 13.5 and 20.4 FPS, visually ok
Test 2: same framerate as test 1, no glow whatsoever
Test 3: same framerate as test 1, no glow whatsoever
Proprietary Dell Laptop Drivers
The first time after booting that I run any demopaja program, it shows up horizontally offset by about 20 or 30 pixels? (hard to tell) such that the right side is cut off.

I'm not sure a Rage Mobility qualifies as a Radeon :)
test 1: 60 fps
test 2: 5-6 fps
test 3: 5-6 fps
I have a Radeon 9600 PRO and an AMD Athlon 1ghz cpu. All of the above tests looks ok visually.

P4-HT 2.4ghz, Radeon9800pro 128mb, Catalyst 3.7
Test 1: 105fps
Test 2: 5fps
Test 3: 5fps
All look good visually.. but every test crashes my entire PC on exit! No bluescreen or anything, just a reboot. The Legomania demo did the same, but this hasn't happened with any other demo/game/software so far.

Gargaj: It was worth a try... I like to have demos that run on my computer (don't we all?)...

Test1: 60fps
Test2: 5.1fps

no tweaking done on card yet, it's just installed. :)

Yep, I get about the same results as others.
XP-SP1, DX9.0b, 2000+, 9600Pro 128MB
same as above except that:
test1 : 100+ with catalyst 3.6, 60 (+BSOD at exit)with catalyst 3.7
and Legomania gives an error at exit but who really cares ? ;)

mmm silly me, the fps difference must be due to FSAA...
Ironically, I DO get glow on the object where/when it appears in Legomania.
Catalyst 3.6 / Radeon 9000 Pro
Everything runs as intended
test 1: ~112fps
test 2: ~5fps
test 3: ~5fps
interestingly enough, the latter two run at ~9 fps in windowed mode.

So, should we take this as a proof that Radeon cannot render to texture at acceptable speed or what?
Bad. Very bad.
I don't think there's an effect you couldn't do with it yet it's always portable (no modern pixel/fragment shit required) and ATI fails to recognize this. If this is so then death to the fucking morons.
