Which are the 'high status' demo parties nowadays?
category: general [glöplog]
irokos, no? shit, that sucks. any news on why?
skrebbel : from what I understood, they are too busy to do everything at the same time (dtv, numerica and personal projects). I will be back in march 2009, and might happen twice a year. Willbe can give you more information about it.
ah, too bad. it was one of my favourite parties last year.
skrebbel : aaaaaw, you're such a sentimental :')
No wonder you like french stuff !

skrebble: i just dont count on the parties gone commercial since by definition they scare sceners away. i find them too unstable. but yes, i would agree tg releases are on same quality as solskogen and kg, thats true.
ps: imho, your definition doesn't seem to apply to asm in the first place...
numerica was cool yes
keops, why do you think i hated it that you moved away! :'(
If the definition for "decent" should be *more* than a thumb up, I have not read the same english dictionary as ps. Then again, ps and I don't share taste in demos at all.
@Madenmann: I don't particulary fight for my party as such, I'm just annoyed by the german-finnish BP-elitism conspiracy :P

Sdw: Big Floppy People is one of the nicer parties I've been to. I didn't know anybody when I came, but I still had a really good time and met some really friendly people there. To me that gives it a "high status". But that was probably not what you had in mind. I really hope to see you at BP though. Was nice talking to you last time :)

thanks for the support -.-"
Archmage: Yes, sure was fun chatting at BFP! :D And you do have a point that the smaller parties with a more "cozy" feeling to them do have a charm that is hard to beat.
However, I was more thinking along the lines on which parties that people tend to release their major releases on. But come to think of it, that mostly is a PC thing. When we are talking oldschool platforms (C64, Atari etc.) many of the nicest releases make their appearance on smaller parties targeted at that crowd.

Well yes, I also like the TG/kindergarden/solksogen releases the recent years.
lug00ber: quite decent != high quality. we're talking about parties with reliable high quality prods here.. i think despite our taste in demos we can both agree there is a huge gap between something worth seeing once and something worth seeing a dozen times. is what i meant to say with the number 3 and tg beeing unreliable somewhat clearer now?
ger: asm is a special case on its own, it never suffered the downhill that most other demoparties gone commercial have. props to abyss and the rest of the orgas for that. i might disagree with their preselection criteria to the point of not suggesting anyone to participate but hats off to keeping a demoparty with quality prods running strong for so long.

keops, from what i heard from dax at tum, numerica will probably going to be a biannual party (read: every second year).
To stick to the topic, I believe we pretty much only have two "high status demo parties" (if "high status" means what I think it means), which is Assembly and Breakpoint. The rest are nice, sure, but getting a good placement at one of these two could/should be considered "high status".
I agree with gloom, Breakpoint always and Assembly most of the time delivers something really ahead of anything else out there. I can't really say that about any other party... Sure, now and then something happens like ASD releases to the gathering, but... their prod is really out of place next to the others.
Shadow: When it comes to the platforms you mention, I tend to think of X as the high status party for C64 and Outline as the main one for Atari.
It would have been fun to release a demo at a smaller party once, for instance at Solskogen, but at the same time it is more challenging to release where the real competition is I guess. Thus BP and ASM attracts the prods with the longest production time.

Not that long production time necessarily equals quality. But still. ;)
I think that the releases after 2003 at Gathering are not bad at all. Some very good groups from Norway (such as inf, Outracks, playpsyco, keyboarders, portal process) started and still do their best there. For example, this years demo Gamma from Outracks is a best demo nomination for me.
ps: thanks for remembering we do exist in your country-list ;)
anyway - i basically agree with filipe on dividing by nationality.
the question was about which parties have a track for good releases over the years nonetheless...
speaking about pc releases, it's the bigger and most famous ones too - more competition, more attenders. which absolutely does not imply that smaller parties, even if held one year only or on their first like Icons didn't have good releases...
and most importantly IT DOESEN'T MEAN THEY ARE LESS FUN!!!!11uno \o/

'lapsen-on-ice' was indeed a two-attenders party with lot of fun, yes ;)
Assembly has nice releases (due to the prize money?) but no sceners inside. Boozing on the hill was fun though, but the people one was boozing with wasn't necessarily sceners (though there were quite a lot of sceners about).
I like Breakpoint. Big, but still definitely a scene event. I think I liked Mekka-Symposium even better. And boozing.
As for high status, well, it really depends on the actual competition - and sometimes a particular compo at a particular party does not have any good releases - in that case, there's not as much status in winning it as there would be if there was really fierce competition ...
