Still,. the TOP10 doesn't seem to be working properly..

category: general [glöplog]

No, I am not complaining about the glops again (haven't counted them one per one though to be sure if the pouet engine misses some =)

But, have a look for example at..
http://www.pouet.net/top10.php?type=prods&platform=ZX+Spectrum&x=32&y=8
It's the Spectrum TOP productions list (yeah, save the Speccy scene and stuff,... intermission :)))

invasion has smaller popularity and no comments at all, but is higher than 7th reality for example with 7 thumbs up and 2% popularity
lazha of savers is low too, Higher State is Higher and should be Higher (too many coincidential connections lately, don't ya think? ;)
Is it me or the Top10 engine isn't working properly? I haven't noticed anything like this in bigger platforms (but it's harder to notice there) but it happens with small scenes, where there is too low movement/popularity and votes. I would like an accurate working top10 in pouet (no matter the 'innacurate' votes of sceners)

Also, the idea of Top10 everything in last week/month that someone else suggested is very valuable. I hope it is beeing processed by the pouet staff..

Does the top 10 actually go on no. of votes etc or is it using something more like google's page rank? I remember it saying 'increase the popularity of this page by linking to it'...

Normally that means the page is ranked by the number of sites with links to it.

Yes, but because more people will click through the link to the demo at pouet and the popularity will be raised by their visit. I don't think it plainly depends on the number of sites visits, it's just that more site links means more possibilities for popularity. And it is written actually in each demo. The top10 actually is a combination of thumbs up/down and popularity. 7th reality has still 7 thumbs up and 2% popularity but looses the 1st place from invasion with no comments at all and 1% popularity. Still, there is a problem..

I don't think it plainly depends on the number of sites "linked" (not visits, ugh!)

i think it depends on the amount of feedback, aswell as the clicks

Yes,. so it's wrong ;)

It shouldn't be based on number of comments etc anyway, otherwise the old demos with many comments will stay at the top, while newer ones will stay stuck nearer the bottom. Meanwhile, people continue clicking on the top 10 demos, adding to their popularity and making the problem worse!

But I can't think of any better system right now, so i'll go shut up and sit in a corner.

There is actually some kind of delay for top10 charts on pouet.net it seems. Althuogh Worldcharts 15 used to have 20% popularity for a Windows diskmag, it wasn't charted in top10 Windows diskmags.
Now the popularity decreased to 18% and it is ranked at its normal place in the top10 windows diskmag chart.

we all know what to do:
vote up the Invasion thingy so it deserves to lead, then analogue can skip this post! jaa!

i guess analogue is laughing is ass off when he reads all this (and previous) discussion about how the charts work.

chaos, but he still needs to fix it.
perhaps we need a diskmag where people can vote for the best demos etc?

Then we would have ourselves a top ten updated regularly.

Somehow, i think that may need less work than fixing the existing charts...

Hahahahaha!! Chaos, you're probably right... ;-)

It seems the all-time-topic 'how does the chart-routine of pouet.net work at all !??!!?' is one of the MOST hidden secrets ever in the scene!! ;-DD

Something like the same as with the receipe of coca cola I'd say... ;-)))

Really funny...

Will it EVER be solved?? ;-D I doubt it...

maybe analogue is manually setting the top10 :))

on a sidenote:
the "parties" page is still unusable (takes about 2 minutes to generate), eventhough i can't really imagine why, since it should be something like...
"select count(*) as c from prods group by partyname, partyrank"
...which is quite optimal, and definetely shouldn't take 2 minutes to generate i think. unless the server is something like a 486 of course.

sidenote #2: the new comment-paging function is nice, but would it be possible to have it cookie'd?

Hmm,. I was reading SQL today, Databases is the next lesson I have to write for exams and finally all the things you people say when we talk about Pouet problems, sounds familiar! :) (almost)

I think the top 10 is very old it's always the Same prods that are in it...
I think that's because everyone click them to see them...
And that's why they are always there..

Yes I agree with that, and all agree with that already. Top10 or Top100(more) or TopX at X days, X weeks, months or everything would be great as an alternative..

Well...what can I say, AFAIK, the top10 is working great and the problem mentionned at the top of the thread isn't there anymore, so I can't check for it.

The top10!=popularity, it was like that at the beginning, then time to time I tried to fine tune the top10 in order to get something balanced between new and oldprods.

So what counts basically:
- visits (not int the google style, it would imply pouet to crawl all the scene website...=) )
- comments
- ratings
- date of comments

So basically everything... sometimes it seems broken because the server hosting the crontab is down, but nothing really serious =)

About the parties pages, it's totally a mess and should'nt be used until I look at it again... sorry ^^

Look at porrastuvat and FR-19, they are relatively recent prod and have a good place in the top10. And I think FR-25 is not too far from taking a place in it soon. ^^;

I hope I helped ^^

well uhm... honestly it wouldn't take more than 5 minutes :]

another thing: when you select a party, it is most annoying when there are e.g. 3 democompo winners. maybe separating the compos/categories by
the platform, eventhough that would ruin combined demo compos, or console ones...

another nice thing would be linking e.g. all the other Mekka's, when i open e.g. Mekka'02.

Could you allow users (registered, logged in users) to select the number of comments they want to see when they first visit a production? Since Pouet.net 0.8.17 came out I keep having to select 'all'... unless there are less than 25 comments...

I'll add a cookie, ok.
