Capped - Flash Video for Demos

category: general [glöplog]
A little project I'm working on:

http://capped.micksam7.com/

Flash Video for Demos. Basicly it's like YouTube except [much] better quality, or Demoscene.TV's On demand viewing without having to log in.

Just a few videos on there for now, some of them came out pretty well. Demos that use noise overlays or a lot of action tend to artifact, but are still definately watchable.

The streams are 1,160 kbit/s, so the file sizes tend to be fairly large [8.7 MB per minute], the player size is optimized for putting in blogs and sites - it isn't ment to replace a full .avi cap. Though I may make larger versions of some vids.

Any suggestions/bug reports/comments or demos you want to see up there, post here I suppose.

Requires Flash 8 or above, doesn't work on Nintendo Wii and likely doesn't work on any other embedded device.

kinda cool but would be even cooler if you could include the bottom links into the embeddable player. :)

Was going to eventually, just need to write a reader for the info files.

brilliant! I'd totally wager in with some money to support a domain name if you're interested because I love this idea. demotube.com? albert . sandberg at gmail if you want some support.

boy, it would be great if flash video would be implemented directly in pouet :) .

Really... if you're going for hi-res web streams, you might as well upload your stuff to stage6 ;)

@ stijntje - I was going for something that almost everyone has, but hey, if that works for you.

Rubicante approves of this project. :)

What about compressing them to .h264 mp4 with ACC for audio and saving some of your time, vp6 will be dead soon, the last "beta" version of flash player can handle .h264 .mp4 files.

^^

PS: forget about divx.

@+ Yeah I saw that, I'll use that when it's out of beta, maybe.

H.264 is da wayyyy to go!

wtf. H.264/AAC/3GP. All my videos should be playable with that player... Now we only need stable 4MBit of bandwidth :)

Moving sucks - no reliable internet the past 2 weeks.

Bringing this project back up - I've got a version of the player that displays links as per Gargaj's suggestion. It's not up yet since it has a few bugs.

Any demos you want to see up there, post a link to the avi file and it's pouet page and I'll get it up in a few days.

Bloody cool! It'd rule even more if we could upload our own caps though!

@kus ma bite - I've been pondering how to do that without people starting to upload random !?#@ to my server. :)

simple: have mandatory approval for all uploaded videos. it would slow things down a bit, but it's better than people uploading random shit.

Good idea, i like it. Only thing I'd say is that most people can watch pc demos without much issue, this site would be much more useful for old + non-pc prods. (Not to say recent pc stuff shouldn't be in there, it should :)

psonice: that was some subtle joke which i don't understand because of my utter ignorance, wasn't it?

blala: nope. Most people have a pc, and at least for most of the people in the scene that pc will be capable of watching most recent pc demos. In comparison, not many have a collection of 8/16bit machines, rare consoles, a pc capable of running old dos demos etc.

So my point was just that it's perhaps more useful to have videos of those demos most of us can't watch (at least without arsing around with emulators). I'm not saying exclude pc demos of course, it'd be great especially to have videos of demos that need the latest and expensive hardware, and all of the demos that run on the average pc will be welcome to everyone who uses a mac or whatever.

I'm not saying make the site only for x and not y, more that x would be more useful than y and should perhaps have more priority. But I support the idea, whatever is done first :)

I have a pc (actually two, if I count the intel mac; no, three, I have a p100 too, somewhere), I have been in the pc scene since 93, and I don't even remember the year when I was able to watch more than a handful demos on my actual pc... Since the emergence of 3d acceleration, (pc) demo compatibilty has fallen below unimaginable levels...

To the contrary, for example 98% of c64 demos run perfectly under vice, and many old pc demos/intros run quite ok (albeit slowly) under dosbox now.

So, clearly, I disagree with you. I don't even try to download demos anymore, I automatically download the video grabs...

I guess it depends on what hardware most people have, and I've no idea what the average scener has. I've been using the same pc at work for over 3 years, the video card at least wasn't high end at all when it was new, and I've been able to watch almost all demos on it since. I'd have thought that was pretty average, but maybe not.

On the other hand I've used macs exclusively at home for 3 years, and until last month only ppc macs so i couldn't watch anything other than videos, so I certainly see your point of view.
