that's indeed sad news - as some of you I also never knew him ... just read about his suicide ... RIP ...
Rest In Peace mate, only really knew you on IRC and via Email, but I'll remember those conversations about the scene and about your life and how you felt over those years... I know I was a long way off and I missed you at Breakpoint 03 when I finally came to Europe...
Hope you're feeling better wherever you are now and that the pain you felt isn't there anymore.

[i] without Good Bye..

I've also discovered this picture this morning and I think that it say it all.
this is, together with the photo from stern.de, most likely the last photo showing crest alive. xenon/park, who shoot this picture, sent it to me to be published on slengpung.

oh dear, so you did it finally. let's hope that this was no final step, just a transition to another kind of lifeform. in case there is really nothing after death, you certainly did a mistake.
anyway, let some of your spirit flow in the now from your grave growing flowers and trees, maybe some people will recognise that and will be influenced. that would be a great contribution for a better world from you. and of course we still have your thoughts and opinions written into the endless scope of the internet.
i hope you found your freedom and peace now.

sad.
simply sad.
simply sad.
Rest in peace, Crest.
To all wondering, no, Crest did not jump immediately after Evoke. His last mail to me was on august 14, and he also posted on Bitfellas in the Evoke thread that day. His Bitfellas profile says his last visit was on august 15.
The last thing he uploaded to scene.org were some Evoke pictures and videos that some unknown guy had uploaded to his machine (which took several hours because he was behind a very slow connection).

I never met him, but still these kind of news are terribly sad.
First things first: I wish him to be in a better state of mind now, or if reincarnation should actually not exist, to rest in peace. I really do. And it is the best thing we all can do because if life actually does not end with the body’s death, his soul is currently in need of all support we can give.
However, I honestly doubt that he’s now doing better. Crest obviously suffered from a major contact disorder to say the least, and let’s face it: If his soul still exists, it’s suffering from the very same thing it suffered from before. And if not then … well … he just killed himself. What a way to go.
From what I heard -- and I am sure that Scamp and Dipswitch were very right in writing what they wrote -- Crest was never a social character, nor did he ever seem to be able to get into the same mental vibe as any other person in the room. I am very sorry for this to have been his sickness but one thing must be said loudly and clearly:
It was a sickness.
No matter what help was offered to him -- and I have followed the stories over the years every once in a while -- he never made good use of it. Apparently up to the very last days when the guys from C4 (Chaos Computer Club Cologne) whose place he stayed at for a while after Evoke provided him lots of information on where to go and how to get help, he always rejected whatever he was offered. He took no advice and yet complained a lot about how bad things were, and as you can see on his website, this phenomenon was not new. He had been talking about suicide for at least six years.
I was not a close friend of Crest's, or any sort of friend of his really, for that matter. But I knew him for almost ten years, and to be frank, I cannot say that any contact with him has ever been nice or just okay, no matter what we talked about, even when I was eager to find out about a new scene audio CD that he was distributing, and when I really wanted to like him.
The demoscene is a great platform for all sorts of people to develop their abilities, to get in contact and have a beer with other sceners all over the world, and to experience an incredible sense of tolerance, hospitality and helpfulness.
Crest probably was offered more help in our midst than he would have been offered anywhere else. Some people say he should have made something out of what he was offered. Maybe, but maybe he felt unable to. Some say we shouldn’t have pampered his ass this much so that he would have woken up and not lead his life in the demoscene dreamworld. Maybe, but maybe it was the only possibility he saw. Some will miss his demoshows while others will create new ones in his memory. Go with whatever you feel best with.
But let us learn one thing from this, please. We are a big family, and it is a blessing that we have found our way to the friendships in the scene. It is essential that we do not only offer a hand to those in need but also to try our very best to take somebody’s helping hand and not to deny it because of pride, a grudge we’re holding or because of any other feeling that we think justifies it. We all are in need for a step back every once in a while to find out whether our opinions are actually as solidly founded as we thought, and whether we are directing our attention on the things that deserve it.
Even we -- the "healthy ones" -- could do very well with more loving-kindness, even if some of us only notice it after having a beer together.
We are all going to be better people for doing what we do,
TOGETHER.

bad news that make me very sad. rest in peace crest. may god forgive you. i´ll carry you in good memories.
Always saw him around and talked to him on irc when i hung around there, mostly around 2k.
He did things for the scene and should always have our respect for that. Rest in peace.

Does anyone know anything about funeral and/or family? If anyone nearby could have condolences from here delivered it would probably help his family.
word netpoet.
netpoet, well said.
indeed.
btw guys i've just discovered the ultimate recipee to Happiness, if you are interested...
1) get a raging toothache for 2 workdays and 1 sleepless night
2) go to the dentist
3) and then THIS IS PURE HAPPINESS.
