Shaders? Where we're going we don't need shaders!

What exactly is wrong with requiring shaders 2.0?
added on the 2007-08-09 13:38:18 by Preacher Preacher
yes, it is the end a long time ago.

Like everything else that was new and has ended the demoscene since 1987!

Or is it the "oooh nooo.. this can be done WITHOUT SHADERS if you spend two days on making crazy workarounds for stuff"?

(the same thing as the "oh look, the filesize is eight megabytes even though it does not look like a modern computer game and it's easy and fun to code a softsynth that sounds exactly like Reason or guitars or whatever since everything should be stuck in 64k and generated anyway, since it's POSSIBLE to do that But it still has to look like it's from a research paper...)

Speaking of which, check out the latest Adapt prod. Deepr does his stuff without shaders and it contains some pretty cool fx ;)

my only friend, the end
You can get a shader model 3.0 card for about £30 (don't know how many Euro that is) these days, so if you don't have one, you can't really be very interested in watching demos...
I don't know why the demoscenen isn't requiring 3.0 shaders all the time, we are supposed to be cutting edge, no?

"i think the sky's about to fall in."

Smash: We happened to agree on stuff a few times in a row (which I remember was seriously puzzling and disturbing!) yet the sky did not fall in yet! ;)

4.0 ftw

2.0 is pretty enough, all we need is hardware support for longer shaders.. :)

I finished my sm3.0 stuff a year ago, so now I only have to wait until 2011 to be able to release it.

well, let me get all opensource on your collective asses: if you see a demo and think it should be possible with <2.0 shaders, well, patches welcome!

(of course you won't get the sources. but come on, people didn't have the sources on hand when they patched soundtracker either. connect to your scene spirit and channel that inner reenigne esrever!)

Gigabyte 7600GS 256Mb AGP silent PS2.0/3.0=>*110 euros*
Runs the latest demos very smoothly. I would never put more on the table for a gfx-card and I'm so happy with it (completely noiseless, perfect for audio takes)

So why giving a damn to <2.0 cards anymore? ;)

i always thought using the hardware to it's maximum was a good thing in demoscene. Do it with shaders and use the remaining gpu time to do something cool, if you don;t it may be mans you are not able to do something cool and you hide behind the "i could not do anything else because this is <ps2.0".

For me doing something without shaders if you can use them is suspicious, if not lame in most cases.

iq: it can also be because some people want their stuff compatible with most PCs, even old crappy hardware that is 6 years old. Matter of taste ;)

2.0 shader card costs around 20e in Finland. Can't be that fucking much if you want to see some demos. Bet that next time some UNIX wanker starts to cry about demos not being produced for OS X/Linux/FreeBSD/what ever
