Where are the high end demos?
category: general [glöplog]
Are scene members too poor to get the gear? WTF is going on????
What do you mean? Cray supercomputers or something?
There's already a section for AGA Amigas. What more do you want??
Haven't you been reading the threads here? People whine too much when you write a demo that requires high(ish) end HW. They're all too busy coding for TNT2s using DirectX 5.
33: I am too poor.
legalize: well, that's "fallback coding" for you.
what is directx?
who is _216_?
why hasn't anyone leveled finland to the ground yet?
more nukes plz!!!
more nukes plz!!!
go finland! you will save the scene!
Some (or maybe even most) of the sceners are still students (counting me), living at 1,5e/day budget, that means that I would have to live 134 days without food, toilet paper or anything else to have money for a 200e GF4. (Altho' I already got one from old savings. yay!)
1.5euro/day budget in finland... hmmm... surfing from the homeless shelter i suppose?
Amiga 500 should be enough for anyone.
havoc: unfortunately that's true. after rent, internet connection and regular trips to demoparties, alko and the nearest bar you won't have too much money left :/
Maybe nVidia and ATi should give freebies to sceners :)

and people who work (in anything else than games or similar) don't have time for games and hence don't need the latest whizz graphic card.
(most democoders wouldn't justify buying a $600 audio card either, i guess)
so there.

so there.
to get this straight, i'm not meaning game coders have any sort of time for gaming, but they have alternative reasons to access high end 3d equipment
Now, this thread sucks a lot.
Can't you imagine yourself why no-one is coding anything for the newest multimedia hardware in stores?
And anyway, why don't you buy yourself some fat-mama-boy-hypermedia-guagestrige-4d-multivirtual videocard and show us something, coded by you of course, which exploits its features?
Maybe we will buy it, if your marketing skills are good enough...

why whine when you can be one of the few(?) coding high end demos? what happened to do it yourself? godamn.. let ppl do what they want.. if you do code high end demos perhaps I can watch them at a friends house or at the local computerstore...
whenever people make demos compliant to you guys definition of "high end" it's always BLABLABLA I CAN'T WATCH IT BLABLA OOH BLABLA. besides that, most of these "high end" demos are rather LOW END considering the hardware they're made on. a real high end demo is something that gets extrordinary results from 'regular' hardware ;)
superplek : 1 point!
Don't get me wrong! Finland has the most insane people I know in the scene and that's why I would love to visit it! ;P

Btw,. you asked the wrong question. What does it mean high end demos? Wanting the eyes of virgin Maria (as we say in Greece ;)))? I mean, a Pentium4 and 512MB Ram and GeForce4Ti??? Heh..
Another regular question other people are doing, is why the hell are there no PC demos that reach the hardware to the limits! Like,.. if a PC coder did the same optimized code that a C64 coder is doing, we would see Heaven7 running well in a 486 for example (Just a silly unrealistic example to get a point). But anyways,. that's another thread for another flame ;P
But asking why people don't code for extreme high end PCs? Our PCs are already too powerfull and we gotta kick the ass out of them!!!

In response to the critisism:
Remember the times of these demos. Here is my list of TOP 10 "high end demos of their time":
- 303 (1997)
- Dope (1995)
- Tribes (1997)
- The Fulcrum (1998)
- Sunflower (1997)
- Genocyd (1997)
- State of Mind (1998)
- Robotnik (1997)
- Rubicon 2 (1999)
- Toasted (1996)
Remember those? I can't seem to think of any recent demo matching the image impact vs. cpu usage of those demos compared to the more recent demos. All those old demos don't use 3D acceleraters, also. I mean... Do any demo coder know how to use shaders? :P I mean WTF???

Oh, so if you use shaders your demo will instantly be high-end and much better than demos not requiring them. Makes sense.
