Maybe some people don't have access to parties! (like me for example) :P

good point rp. i remember when there was an even distribution of demo-releases over the entire year. that was really cool. however; it seems that these days there are alot of parties, and the "free flow of productions" seems to have accellerated again. i like that. :)

My personal favorite way to recieve new demo releases was in the mail (snail mail) :)
It was great to recieve an actual 3.5" disk in the post from another scener on the other side of the world.

Speaking solely for myself, the 'old skool' experience is still similar to what happens today.

Back in the late 80's/early 90's, my main source of demos was through UK PD mail order companies. Every so often I'd place an order, then several weeks later a shitload of demos would arrive in a big puffy package.

Today my main source is the internet. Every so often a demo competition is finished, and several days later a shitload of productions are uploaded to web.

Entirely similar methinks...

Yup.
Difficult to say - I always enjoyed getting demos throughout the year, on a regular basis. I never noticed a great deal of 'follow the party' business, but I guess it does exist today.

Used to be there was always a push on to beat someone's record - and this sort of exists today in the 4k and 64k intro competitions.

But definately not in the 10 meg demo competitions, where all you have to do to get your bad code to run in 100 frames/second is buy a faster processor. Not much point in improving code when it's cheaper to just upgrade...

Ah well, it's not killing the scene, it's changing it (:

Again (:
ahem totally offtopic: SirGarbagetruck: i tried to reach you under two mail adds, none worked. 4th dimension of cryptoburners is juyt up again (read prod comment;)

besides that, rp is right ;) personally i miss the public fighting in prods between groups ;) "scrollers suck" killed not just the scrcollies :(((

pigpen: Seems like YOU are totally off topic... I dont miss crappy scrolltexts saying WE RULE - YOU DONT!(all in all that most be what you are missing) ... I quitted the scene back in 94 due to this ELITEISM .. and to tell you the truth: I dont really want it back .. coz thats what killing the scene afterall

Sir GarbagetrucK, ehm, it depends what you wanna do, 80's effects doesnt have to optimized nowadays, no, still, if you want to make something cool you better optimize your code.. or well maybee its just me who used to code on 400MHz, now when i have 1.33GHz maybee.. hehe :D

bizq: this isn't offtopic if you think about it a step further - when people release a prod apart from any party, there is something missing: the competition.
those scroll text weren't meant *that* seriously, they were verbal competition. furthermore, the other groups had to react and/or to do better, this is good for both number of releases and quality.
the friendship between those groups was there as it is today.

unexpected pouet quizz of the month!

Q. Who released this year a production, apart from
any party, featuring a scroller, and which induced
much brouhaha?

added on the 2001-12-19 11:07:31 by _-_-__ _-_-__
They SHOULD be optimized! There's no reason to have a sinus scroller take 10 megs! (:

And, yes, the competition part is a great deal of why it's difficult for the scene to expand in areas where there are no parties (the states, Japan, South America, etc.)

This is why I really have to commend party organizers that will allow competition from the internet. It gives those of us who live 8 hours by plane from the nearest party a chance to compete.

Alternately, we could take the other approach - competitions outside of parties.

(I disagree about the scrolltext competitions not being that serious - back in the days of the bob wars, it was MORE serious than parties - parties tended to be very small at that time, more a local gathering than a national or international thing. Or so I'm told, I obviously wasn't at ANY of them. Just watched (: )
And I have no idea on the quiz ):
Yeah, release out of any party is a cool thing, it's remember me my gold years of swapping Amiga scene in 94.

We had an audience for demos out of partys, but scroll-wars feed the system. You waited the next intro just to read the scroll, it's different now, we wait for design and effects. And there is more prods now than in 93 for example. In these old years we see 20 times the same demo, now we see just 1 or 2 times the same demo, because we have very lots of demo to see (more than 10 news on pouet to see for example).

Nowadays, if you release out of a party, it's very difficult to find an audience. When a party is over, lots of small gloppers comes just to comment the prods they had view at the party place and never come to view others prods.

And now in 2001, we have no swappers to spread our prods, it's people who download if they want, and only if they want.

So, release out of any party is good, but it's hard to relase a demo and having nobody to see it. Because no swappers and no interest anymore in group wars with demos as weapons.

Bizq : the scene die every 3 years, so just wait the next reborn before your come back, it's for 2003 :)

Sir Garbagetruck : when we go to parties, we can have a 20 hours of car travel too :') try to organize party in your city ;'] why not ? perhaps you will do a legendary party place and we will go in plane to see you, why not ? :)

The problem when sending demos by email to a party is if too much people do that, nobody will go to the partys, it will be virtual partys with 50 people. The interest in party is to meet others sceners and speach about the current prod (and lots of others things like rumours of fantastic release and others ....), technics, swap ideas etc ...

Perhaps we can try to do a 'POUET PARTY' wich will be THE virtual only online party ?
With a true dead line and submissions by internet for people who cant go to real partys ?
- sometimes you have to throw a little wood into the fire, to make people feel the warmth again :)

pigpen: so you say that If people should release demos off a competition, they should have a scroolie to keep up the competition. Sorry I dont get ya :)

the Only funny scrolltexts I remember were those written at parties so.. pigpen ... DOH! .. I dont like your argument

I am.

Superplek: you already HAVE online demoparties, pretty much. Your audience today consists mostly of the internet, who didn't come to the party. Most groups release post-party versions of demos for the main audience - those not at the party.

Though, when I was in Comic Pirates and we tried to get 2 parties online with webcams and so on (Ryg: note, that was Germans, 3 Swedes, and me) it didn't work well. But that was 5 years ago almost? It might work more today.

Several of the South American groups I used to talk to were entering competitions thru the internet. Note that this isn't a 'you don't have a brick and mortar party' deal, it's a you HAVE one, and if you aren't able to attend, you send your work anyway for the compo.

And it's still fun, but not so much 'in the moment.'

As for organizing and setting up a party in the states, it's very difficult to do so when you rent a hall and no one shows (: That's happened to a lot of folks... Back in the day we were going to have a United-Trackers party in Chicago, but it never developed due to no one being able to afford the hall...

I _will_ be at Coma 4 next year.

Oh, and that wans't driving 20 hours. Driving, Montreal is 5 _days_ from here (18 hour drive each day.) Not that I won't drive 5 days, I will, I love driving (:
