Ripping, cheating and re-releasing at Breakpoint and how we are going to deal with it

category: general [glöplog]
We've meanwhile learned that there are a few suspicious compo winners at Breakpoint. We are currently investigating these.

If someone has stolen competition prize money by cheating in the compos, we'll respond with drastic measures to this. The release will be disqualified, removed from our servers. The submitter will be banned from submitting anything to a Breakpoint competition for the next 3 years. If the cheater doesn't pay back the received prize money, he'll be completely banned from attending Breakpoint ever again.

Please report suspicious findings to breakpoint07@untergrund.net. You may also post to this thread.

So debris was ripped from that video after all?

I think that counts as inspiration... I really wonder what was "suspicious". (And how it got through the filters.)

Also, I wonder if Debris has any correlation towards this.

For the suspicious releases, we'll first try to get a statement from the submitter directly before making that public.

Sorry, I should have added some ;)) :DDD... I think fiver made pretty clear where his inspiration came from.

Even if the output was exactly the same I doubt the original was done with 177kb of data ;)
That's not ripping.

Sonic/smash designs has stolen the #3 executable music (oldschool) prize money. He wasn't present at the party at all, instead AEG/smash designs has submitted the SID. The tune itself is a re-release of a *6* years old tune by Sonic.

Big fuckings to smash designs for this.

I sure hope they send back the stolen competition prize money so the rightful #3 winner will get it.

Well, there are only so many compo winners. Lets get the release list and let the witch burning commence!

Perhaps you guys are referring to that demo Desert Dream? I'm sure I've seen that somewhere before.

But seriously, while you're at it you can check out my post here:

And give me a lesson in BB code afterwards. ;)

Hi Scamp, first of all congratulations for organising really neat event this year. I was watching demoscene.tv and enjoyed how you guys handled the gradation of compos. Neat idea. I still disagree with not having C64 SID compo, but well.. we have discussed that 2 years ago and there is no need to return back to that ;-)

As far as Sonic is concerned I think we have a sort of prcedens here. According to his post at CSDB he didn't know abou his tune being submitted in the compo. You should confront AEG and possibly punish him for cheating.

It doesn't sound too bad to me. If Sonic is the original composer and he got his prizemoney, where's the ripping and cheating?

Re-releasing is wrong, yes, but I can see how it could be a misunderstanding by AEG.

"While I'm here, I'll enter a track by my groupmate and it'll be a nice surprise if it wins. Hmmm, which track? This is a good one..."

2 days later Sonic informs AEG the track has already been released. ooops!
After we've checked the partymeister logs, I've got to apologize to AEG. He only picked up the prize at the ceremony and didn't know about the cheating.

The person who's done the cheating and submitted the entry is FZool/Smash Designs. Fuckings to him instead ;)

AEG will return the prize so we can give it to the real #3, ilmarque/wamma.

Sometimes I wish some poeple would reconsider their wording before posting. I've heard waiting a bit until angriness is over helps, too.
Pfew, luckily Rob is Jarig didn't win anything :-)

Btw, when updating the results file it would be nice to see the "Executable music (newschool)" somewhere near the oldschool compo. I guess it was printed at the end of the file because it was shown after the pc demo compo during the prize giving.
interesting that you bring that up.
my oldschool executable entry is based on a sketch i've done in 2003 for a liveact, but that old one has never been released anywhere so far (other than in a plain recording of the act). the one i did for breakpoint is all polished up to 4-speed and newly arrranged. does that disqualify my too? i hope not. =)

madenmann: My wording might be a bit harsh, yes. Sadly I didn't have the time to calm down before posting, with people hammering on me regarding these and other issues. Taking a break and having a meal helped. Still doesn't change much about the deserved fuckings to Fzool/Smash Designs.

dalezy: No. That's a completely different thing than re-releasing a 6-year-old-tune that it's in all kinds of archives in combination with violating the rule of having to be present at the party, taking money from a prize money pool you haven't contributed to.
added on the 2007-04-11 23:42:46 by scamp scamp
ok =)

so how could that happen at all then? according to his reply at csdb, sonic didn't even know of all this to happen, i hope releasing stuff without the autor knowing of it doesn't turn into a new sport.

dalezy: He's contradicting himself on this. He's now saying that Fzool asked him to hand something in, and didn't know this was against the rules etc yadayada. None of the two story versions is very convincing, and he's either lying to us or to csdb.

We know for a fact that it was Fzool/Smash Designs to submit the entry, that Fzool and and sonic agreed on submitting this, and that AEG picked up the prize. Solution: Ban Fzool and Sonic from future Breakpoint competitions, make AEG return the prize (which he already promised to do).

Just forbid any entry from the group(s) who cheated for the next Breakpoint, till the problem gets solved.

Other parties should also refuse any entry from those groups as well in the meantime.
