GET THE NEWS TO BOINGBOING.NET
Did that yesterday. No joy yet :)
Oh yeah, who has the mental capacity to deal with Fark?
Shifter: Wikipedia is like the sandworms in Dune - there's a way to ride it, it might be strange, but once learned, it's very useful.
neon: Actually, someone else has done a pretty good job of explaining the horrors of sample-ripping/copyright. Just check out [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9opIWAg82I]this enlightened person[url] -- it actually made my day this one. :)
shifter:
It has been submitted to fark several times already (twice by me). No greenlights yet :(

Shifter: i think Neon is a farker -- Neon?
Btw; I also sent a tip to Boingboing, but so far no dice.

Urk. Speaking of enlightened person -- get your farking tags right this time, you ass.. Here we go again!
How about dragging out Maddox? :)
Hey, I'm not the only one with the download-"Do it"-idea:

Heh, we are now officially a "camp", according to Beauty N The Beat

visit this site for more information and be the judge. Thx to the producer's camp.
In an interesting note, I stumbled upon a Nelly Furtado fan-forum - they actually hate the song because "it sounds too Nintendo". :D
Gargaj: I think it's in that forum where they also claim that Timbaland "destroyed her music" and such.
Finally! NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting -- the largest TV, radio and news-corporation) picked it up!

Star-producer Timbaland has sticky fingers.
The victim of the plagiarism, Glenn Rune Gallefoss, thinks Timbalands behaviour is unethical.
By Stian Fjelldal, NRK P3 (radio)
Listen here for an example (link to YouTube)
The all-star american producer seems to have pulled an "Fitts for fight" and helped himself to material from the very marginal subculture known as "the Demoscene".
- This is bad
One of the victims is norwegian Glenn Rune Gallefoss.
- This is actually pretty bad. Someone so big and well-known just downloads a song from the internet and passes it off as his own without crediting, says Gallefoss to NRK P3.
Computermusic
It was during the demoparty Assembly 2000 in Finland that the original song, which now has become the big buzz in the blogosphere, was released.
The finnish demoartist Janne "Tempest/Damage" Suni participated in the category "Oldskool Music Compo" and went home with the 1st price with his Amiga-composition "Acid Jazz Evening".
Identical
Two years later, Glenn Rune Gallefoss covered the original song on his Commodore 64. In 2005 his arrangement of the song pops up as a ringtone called "Block Party".
It is almost identical with Gallefoss' and Suni's compositions, but is passed off as being a Timbaland-production.
David vs. Goliath
That was only the beginning however. Last year, Timbaland prouced Nelly Furtados album "Loose" og lo and behold, "Acid Jazz Evening" makes an appearance here too, as a loop in the song "Do It".
- Last July I got a mail from Tempest where he mentioned this and that he had contacted some lawyers. He didn't say much more, except that it would probably be impossible to come anywhere with the case since Timbaland has the huge record company Geffen to back him. It's a bit like David and Goliath. But now things seem to be happening.
Recognized
Gallefoss works as a steel-worker in Laksevåg, Bergen. In his spare time he makes computermusic, and in 1999 and 2000 he won the Chip-competition during the demogathering Mekka-Symposium in Germany. He does not have much knowledge about Timbaland apart from having heard some of his songs.
- He is world-known and a good producer, I suppose, but he should credit people for what they have made.
The culture
The demoscene subculture grew from the glory days of the Commodore 64 and the Amiga in the 80s, and is just as much about cracking software as it is about music. (glooms note: yeah, I have sent them a mail asking for this to be correected :)
The sense of competition is strong. It's about challenging each other and to see who can create the coolest loops out of very limited applications. (glooms note: this too)
An important part of the inside competition are so-called demoparties. In Norway the demoscene subculture gathers yearly through the festivals Kindergarden and Solskogen to demonstrate their skills.
..and here it is, an official statement from Uberschall regarding their "8-bit stylez" sample-CD:
Yes! I love it when things just work out, don't you? :)
..oh, and yes, I WILL buy that sample-CD for sure -- and so should the rest of you practicing musicians reading this. :) (internal Pouet-joke: that is, if you can manage to SUFFER THROUGH having to hear it slaughtered in 128kbit Ogg Vorbis... :)

Hello Bent,
the song you sent me is definitely not on our sampling CD.
First of all the samples we sell are completely produced and
programmed by ueberschall.
Sometimes we deal with other producers but if so we make sure that
they have all the licenses to sell their music.
Second - the songs on our sampling CD are way shorter. They are only
snippets of about a minute and not complete 3 minute songs.
I repeat,
This song is definetly NOT on our sampling CD 8-bit Stylez!
But I think the best way to proof it is to buy it and see for
yourself :)

Gloom: I applied some additional pressure and sent him a mail about the cracking as well. I'd say this association does not necessarily aid Gallefoss' cause.
Archmage: Okay. I don't think there was much need for it, since I got a swift friendly reply. :) Now I'm trying to get him to write some more about the demoscene, hehe.
Gloom: Goodie. I guess I got the same reply. :)
And you already know how I feel about demoscene exposure/outreach/mission so I'm not repeating myself here. ;)

I've just been looking at the Fitts For Fight article linked from that news story. I don't speak a word of Norwegian, but on the strength of the three recognisable English phrases in it, it's absolutely brilliant.
at first they still wanted them to play at that bylarm festival, because in their opinion it wasn't entirely stolen and their lyrics "added some edge" to the original songs... pfff, i fucking hate the music industry. thank god they changed their minds.
i saw a recording from one of hteir live concerts and they are LAME. it's like they take a perfectly good tune and wipe their asses with it by "singing" badly and pretend it's a c64 playing the goddamn atari st tunes... LAMERRRRSSS

Actually, no. They didn't decide right away, because they wanted to look into the issue themselves. That doesn't mean they decided to let them play.

It doesn't seem like that at all... Some even liked it already when it was just a ring tone. :-)

The background music in "Do It" is so awesome

I like Do It, loving the sounds, it's magical! I like Do It more and more each time I hear it!
lol, I hear in it some weird sounds of Super Nintendo's Street Fighter's Menu it's just me?

Do It- I heard this song when it was just a ringtone...lol but its hot, i couldn't picture no one but her on this!
Hey guys. I want to get the story to some Swiss news sites too. Anybody has/wants to do/knows where to find a decent, up to date, short roundup that could be used/translated? would be nice.. thanks! i hardly find the time to catch up with it all the time and write something clever on my own.
Unlock: http://www.pelulamu.net/timbaland/ is pretty updated, as well as this thread. The roundup on c64.sk is decent, albeit a little geeky.
Kusma: the booker for by:larm is/was also the agent for FFF. My guess is that this erh... double agent... caused the delay and the strikingly vague comments from by:larm after they refused them.
