big fucking deal, the demoscene has always been more about ripping cool stuff and getting away with it than creating unique stuff.

not for everyone

reed: did i say rip? i meant to say blunt re-construction of other peoples exact concept ideas down to most details without giving reference to the source.

in all honesty im not beeing judgmental, i actually think its nice that there are realtime versions of these things and that other demosceners also end up beeing exposed to these concepts and ideas for something other then cubes and tunnels and scroolers and starfields and plasmas. it does require skill and work.

also, knowing what to reuse from a world of inspiration is a selective work, and knowing how to combine it in a nice way is a good value, similar to a good dj who had to redo all his tracks in a way. being realtime this time. with 64megs of precalculated sinus tables. (thats humour not sarcasm btw kids)

i would still value more if it was original concepts though, developed for other reasons then "lets see how this cool effect this leet design company did looks realtime in a demo" but thats the pseudo-artist artyfaggot me speaking i guess.

as long as people have fun doing cool things its all good i guess. :) all art has been made anyways, we are just reinventing the wheel, having some beers while pretending to be creative (thats also humour not sarcasm kids) and with some luck spending some quality time with our friends developing our geek art makering skill0rz of death! (and that was both sarcasm and humour)

(oh, and if i already ran out of money on breakpoint07 by the time i remember saying that... that was humor)

There are no good DJs. DJs are all evil.

Ripping graphics is wrong and should be banished from the demoscene. But why stop there? Too many abuses of system fonts -- make your own damn fonts!

While you're at it, quite using existing languages for your scene "poetry." Create your own damn languages, and that includes programming languages. Nothing worse than so-called "talented" sceners who constantly use C++ or assembly. Try some originality for a change!

Then there's the whole issue of operating system. If you're so damn elite, develop your own complete with custom APIs. Stop whining about the short comings of Windows and Directx and get your hands dirty.

And what's up with the same few processor architectures again and again, always made on silicon wafers. Design your own and choose your own semiconductor materials. In fact, it's high time sceners each created their own logic system for digital circuits.. Why always Boolean? Can't you come up with something on your own? Geez...

Finally, why do all sceners feel the need to evovle from the same common ancestors? For fuck sakes, you lazy sacks of shit, evolve from your *OWN* damn ancestors. Quit copying everyone else.
Fairlight writes on Deadringer file_id.diz or readme.txt that the breakdance scene is from somewhere.

thom: confusing tools with outputs again?
anes: confusing absurdity with reality again?
"all art has been made anyways"

if everyone would have had such a opinion in the past we would still keep scratching signs into cave walls since 60 000 years.
luckily there are some ppl who are trying to make something
new.

thom, I'm confused between your ability to have both a point and be totally ironic about it in a single post.

Geez, that frame by frame scene sure is a blemish for TBL. And they probably don't give a damn, so why should we now that its out in the open that they are copycats? If they weren't a killer group, this thread wouldn't exist in the first place. End of story. As for Fairlight, I have to agree with Reed, coz without influence we wouldn't even have rotating checkerboards.

My late new years resolution next week will be to stay the hell away from pouet, and make the best damn Boris copy ever made. This I intend to dedicate, in person, to Uns3en_ at a certain scene event in the near future.

what archmage said.

ps: some of the scenes in dead ringer were inspired by a mix of various psyop ads (not just the shoe one actually), a hiphop video and a trailer for a channel 4 tv program. the actual result came out rather different. (and by the way, i was totally open about telling the sources of ideas to everyone, because im personally all for anyone in the scene getting ideas from a wider net than "the last demo they saw".) actually it's quite a usual way of working for us - the easiest way of communicating an idea is to say "make it look like this, but with a bit of that thrown in and the colours from here".
the results came out quite different - although the concept of "having a breakdancer" ("OH NOOO, WHAT A RIPPAR, THE IDEA OF A BREAKDANCER IS SUCH A RIP!!!") and some of the colourschemes remained. but it was a good starting point.

if you think that's the same as taking a video from a design website and copying it frame by frame, then you're an idiot. or a troll. take your pick.

maali: not sure what commercial it was anymore, but it was from a big design company, and it sure looked like a flt pc demo to me.. maybe it was you who showed me the link, or evil, dont remember exactly anymore.

It was the Lugz-commercial by psyop.tv as pointed out already in the ripping thread earlier.

But i'll forgive Fairlight since it's been hard work to put that into 64k. Besides, everyone should rip psyop since they make fokking cool stuff ;)

ah, so to rip is all good as long as you change something to make it slightly diferent. i see. if you stick with the whole entire concept then it's lame. ok then, glad to get that out of the way. now where is the line where a concept starts beeing something else? when you add a filter? when you add something else to deface it? when you add more in the same vein?

smash: chill bitch, i aint persecuting fairlight, am just trying to figure out where you (everyone in the scene) think the line is, just my used example was that it seems so obvious that everyone tolerates flt's "inspiration" as long as its got some diferent colors but not the reuse of some wtf frames in the middle of a winner demo.

btw, arent tbl supposed to be disqualified and hit with a basketball bat now? like melon were for crossmixing several soundtracks..

thom: :D
