Back to booze...
Back to booze...
very nice.
cool thanks, and should hopefuly see you all there this year, along with the rest of the motley ukscene crew, watchout! :D
scamp, isn't there missing a word in that sentence?

Q: So what is a demoparty:
A: A demoparty is -- on first view -- like a LAN party. Depending on the size, a few or hundreds of visitors may bring their computers and [HERE] them up at the location.
"There is no longer a seperate tracked music compo, just convert your entries to MP3/OGG and submit them to the streaming music compo (we feel the distinction between tracked and streaming music is pretty irrelevant nowadays)."
i dont particularly care but at the same time i dont agree with that, if you could validate it i'm just curious, imo there is distinctions between tracked and streamed music.
i dont wanna cause an argument, like i said im just asking and curious...

Oh nice, I'll come.
for my part i definatly see a difference between tracked and streamed music. tracking requires for sure more skills and has more limitations (for example .mod) than a common music prog with dozens of audio lines and superb uber plugins. the organizers might re-think about the "music competition" rules.
Yeah: with clear filesize/audio-channel restrictions, and perhaps one organiser to do a quick check on entries, a tracked music compo can exhibit people's aptitude for ingenuity within constraints - a field in which new tricks pop up even after all these years.
Obviously we all know this, and I wouldn't presume to edify the illuminated, but just as the executable music category contains the distinct old and newskool subdivisions, I feel it's fair that 'tracked music' be subdivided similarly - whereby 'newskool tracked music', with VSTs and sky-high bitrate, is unlimited by oldskool constraints and therefore equivalent to streaming music...
If a 20mb Amiga compo can be justified in a world of 64mb PC demos (which I totally agree with), then can't tracked-music composers be given the chance to thrash away at their well-trodden paths a bit more? :)

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to my first BP, the last one having been enjoyed via Demoscene.tv:)
Maximum size .rar pc demo compo entry is 64mb !!
yeay! cool!
yeay! cool!
imho you can start handing in demos as videos too if the limit is already 64mb... 32mb is plenty enough... where the fuck is the demoscene spirit going if we increase those limits more and more?
demoscene died in 1993 anyway ;)
today we have the wannabe-art-demoscene
that's 2 pairs of shoes :)

kojote: a lot of the groups that often release demos at Breakpoint have requested that increase in size limit, so they can make use of high-res textures. And I think this makes sense.
Regarding the streaming music compo: As you know we always list the tools used by the author, so if someone says "I'm still a proud user of FT2", he sure can bring over that message. And well, in todays streaming competitions, a lot of entries already are done in "next-gen" trackers that aren't allowed in the old tracking compo, so this doesn't make sense either. IMHO a tracking compo only makes sense if it's meant as an oldschool compo ("what can you do with a 4 channel mod" etc).
Take all of this with a grain of salt, it's just my personal opinion, I'm not a compo organizer.

"High-res textures"
Great, another boring 3d object demoshow :)

What about changing the motto from
"through time and space"
into
"Realtime was yesterday?"
No tracked music and filesize limit 64mb... but then again, I won't be attending 95% of the PC Demo compo anyway.

big thanks to the bp organisers for recognising that groups who actually have _artists_ now have some room to release full-quality work in the pc democompo. :)
smash, you're welcome!
also thanks to the organisers for hereby making me the winner of the last ever tracker compo at both assembly and breakpoint :D
smash: now make sure your high-resolution, full-blown, ass-kicking next demo actually _runs_ okay also :)
gloom: let's see if there's a spare renderfarm available on ebay ;)
Photorealistic high-res textures can be precalculated or even calculated in real time!
Just so you know...
Just so you know...
smash : gotta second gloom here. you proved with the final of tactical battle loop that those "necessary" hi-res textures aren't really necessary at all, and just make the demo run like crap on a lot of machines...

"Please note that there is no separate Tracked Music Compo any more. If you have prepared an entry for that competition, please convert it to a streaming format and enter it in this one."
Humm... why not executable chiptune entries? ;)
Same old discussion..
1 floppy demo
2 disk demo
5 disk demo
40k 64k 4k 256b
256mb RAM / 512mb ram / 1gb ram
ecs / aga / ppc
dos / windows
demos/intros are about setting restrictions
and use those to the limit.
size matters just as other examples pointed above.. breakpoint just is the trendsetter here, the pioneer if you will for setting new size limits and thus standarts...
You can't escape progress from happening even in the demo scene.
but ofcourse this is an discussable subject with pro and contra's as always..
