Where did gfxzone go?!

category: offtopic [glöplog]
Seems that http://gfxzone.planet-d.net/ is down. Is this permanent? Are there any other sites hosting up-to-date scene gfx?

Why does all bitmap related web sites are going down?

Because the gaming industry don't need so much bitmap resources and hence no artists develop their skills in this field, so less and less gfx are released. That's a bit sad indeed: it's like if painting was dead but for the scene and video games.

But gfx will come back again; promised!

save the discussion from beeing precociously pouetized.

better?

i would say that every thread on this bbs is pouetized BEFORE it is made. so there.

no, thats before i fixed the "feature" that allowed you to post messages on yet uncreated topic threads.
now it solely depends on the users hability to not be troll and/or pricks and dumb.
which as we all know, is unavoidably part of human nature. explaining why pouet is killing the scene.

the fact it -gfxzone, i mean- is down could be related to the endless downtime of planet-d not so long ago.. next to that it hadnt been updated for over two years or so, it's not a real shock either :)

ep: games do need bitmap resources or do you think textures just appear out of the blue?

jeenio: chorizo!
Yes but textures can be done mathematically. The product and all 64 Kb demo prooves that. However textures are applied to objects and loose their bitmap structure which is 2D by essence to became 3D. Something is lost in the process: 3D lost the 2D perfection because a picture is hand drown and show us the vision of the artist from a typical angle, 3D projection eradicate that.

If you want, now the scene and games have moved to the sculpture art and before we were in the painting art. That's different thing, but it's art.

actually those pouet.net logos are too mathematically generated because we dont need 2d artists anymore.. :)

i give up even bothering to argumentate that you're again putting it all wrong.. *clueshoppe picture and all that*
Planet-d's been down for about 2 weeks... Dunno if they'll bring it down. Well not all the site are down. It looks like all the site between a and g are down (hd crash?)

håkon: not that I think this is a good idea, but I guess 1/20 people on #pixel (ircnet) are still graphicians.. so if the point was to just talk with other graphicians / check their stuff out you might consider starting there..

also, now the fuckings poster is at my house \o/

qsdde: so you're basically saying that the whole scene is a pre-school for the games industry? Can't agree with you there, I'm afraid. ;) Besides, anybody familiar with the games industry would tell you that the development of concept art, i.e. 2d art, is essential in the game making process. The ability to draw lies at the heart of all visual expression - be it 2d or 3d.

That said, I have of course noticed that 2d isn't that hot in the scene anymore. Still, after filtering through some of the gfx-compos on scene.org I think there is enough good stuff there to legitimize a gallerysite for scene gfx. I'm NOT the one running it though, so I guess I should shut it. ;)

Leija: The legendary fuckings poster!!! Hope you framed it! ;)

If you draw an image in photshop using only e.g the airbrush, cant that be concidered pixeling. I think its very close to the way that i used to use the paint progs, on amiga. or is pixeling limited only to mean stuff done in oldschool programs like deluxepaint.

qsdde, true that. However, painting didnt dissapear just because sculpturesbecame more popular. There is still some pretty cool hand drawn art in demos :)

Cant anyone contact the person behind gfxzone to get it back?
added on the 2006-07-31 18:41:27 by magic magic
Uh, so, are we really going to lose that huge graphics database like that? Anytime you speak about pixelated graphics where are you going to send the link to? I guess for someone with contacts in planet-d, getting the last backup and doing a copy to untergrund will probably take 1 weekend.

Anyone?

2D art still rocks every platform scene, except for PC.
