In that regard, Rob is jarig is similar to The Popular Demo, except in a much more rushed timeframe. :)

I don't think they're necessarilly targeting "Simple people", I think the target market is really "those who want to try something different" - those who see things happen and want to try it. Those that see that not everything has to be given to them on a plate by Microsoft. Those that, if they want to enhance something have the ability to do it, with full access to the materials that created it, rather than an abstracted api that produced such abominations as anything other than "Hello World" in VB.
I would have thought that Linux was the obvious choice for the demoscene, and I'm glad that a lot of demos have been ported over.
Ubuntu is a great distro, it's usable for our parents, but retains all the power and control that the geek wants. It's what Windows should have been. It's what the Mac tries to do. Ubuntu, IMO, is a great blend between the core of Debian and the support of RedHat, and I welcome it.
Now, may the troll calling begin.

rc55: no offense implied, it's just that the relation between either are a few characteristics that do not justify a comparison by one scale :)
darn und blitz!. Anyone has the email of M. Shuttleworth ?
wasn't mark @ ubuntu.com ?
mark@ubuntu.com

Yeah, seems like it.
what kindof megalomaniac picks himself a firstname-email for a distribution used and developed by hundreds of people? doesnt he realize he effectively excludes other people called Mark from being motivated to join the project and be enthusiastic?
Do all these developers have ubuntu.com addresses?
most likely all people at the ubuntu.company ?
Lots of small companies begin with first name emails. I think the idea is that the feeling might be more personal and friendly, so it's a perk that remains while the company is still small.
hehe and tiny ones do the opposite with full name emails to look like bigger :D
shftr -> Well, I think Mark Shuttleworth's name on the Ubuntu forums is SABDFL, which stands for "Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator For Life", so... yeah, his ego's fine, thanks for asking.
Says "Crusader". No ego-enhancing there, of course ;)
I think Canonical employ about 60-70 at the present time, so I imagine another Mark has Mark.LastName@canonical.com/ubuntu.com etc.

As an aside, in the extremely unlikely circumstance that any of you are at the LinuxExpo this Wednesday, come find me out and I'll introduce you to a couple of people who might be able to persuade you the benefits of this idea ;)
I heard there's some work going to usplash for Feisty, maybe they're actually implementing the API we suggested at Sundown 2006 - could have an Ubuntu demo compo yet...
Linux is for newbs.
ubuntu demo compo? in times when an Amiga demo compo can attract next to none entries? Well anything other than the combined demo category is an automatic failure.
When I say "ubuntu demo compo" i really mean the boot loader - something pretty to look at while a computer boots.
I think it's a sweet idea, but it's not really the kind of thing you release at a party, it's more of a release when ready thing.

To show how MUCH free CPU time there is on boot, and just how much IO wait there is, check this bootchart:

maybe it will begin bringing about a reconcilation between linux and the demomakers ;)

I hate linux and linux hates me. Don't count me in.
