i know ppl with an IQ of >130 that are unable to open a beer bottle (when an "appropriate" bottle opener is missing).
or they wear ropes as belts.
or are too dumb/afraid to drive a car.
or would die within hours if they would get lost in a forest.

those f*#kin IQ tests only prove shit, you morons!

As a matter of fact, the IQ itself was invented for a racist purpose, to prove that Blacks are less intelligent than Whites. It was part of early eugenetics science, in the late 19th century.
Where did you hear that? My sources of information tell a differerent story.

No, racist ideas are stupid because they don't stand up to a closer inspection. You can't make generalized statements about a large number of people just because of their ethnic origin other than perhaps "they tend to be browner".

El Topo, indeed and it's a widespread practice. It seems there is the belief there is that the "average" human exist.

And that one can support opinions through thought-exercises made using this mythical (until proven) average person.

Ok, according to the SAT to IQ page linked from Adok's post on the previous page, my IQ is... 146? Based on GRE score, 144.

Except that since I took the tests in 2001 and 2002, and GRE in 2005, they don't count apparently.

Heck, I can't code and yet wow, the IQ conversion chart says I'm somewhere around a 3-sigma deviation from the mean! Wow.

I took a physchology course as an undergraduate where I learned that essentially IQ is set up such that the average person should get a 100, with standard deviation of 15 points. Any variation within 1 sigma is essentially statistically equivalent and subject to random error, so a person with an IQ of 90 wouldn't be easily distinguishable from someone with an IQ of 100... Not only that, but the test is supposedly only meaningful to 3 sigma- above 145 is genius level, below 55 is clinically retarded.

The maximum range of values for nations is 13.3, so it's within a standard deviation; hence the differences in IQ are meaningless (you might see something out of anything above Poland versus anything below Finland, assuming those results are actually real)

Anyway, I don't know how much you could actually get out of a standard IQ test, much less that SAT conversion thing... You can teach to the SAT and GRE and artificially inflate those. As for IQ, given the variety of specialized IQ tests I doubt that any one of them is in any way meaningful... What about social skills? Common sense? Experience? Emotional Intelligence?

Anyway, what the heck does this have to do with the riots in Hungary? I can only imagine what would happen if something like that discussion leaked over here- spinmeisters on a rampage, but I'd forsee angry violence.

@crusader:
With averages for nations, the value is an average of a very large number of samples. For this reason, the difference needed in order to statistically significant is different. Assuming the sample size is large, the difference required would be very small.

That said, I think there much more appropriate ways to judge a person.. and that the notion of intelligence is more distracting than it is useful.

@crusader
You only looked at European nations! Take a look at www.rlynn.co.uk (table 4) and you'll see that at world level, the range of values is far bigger!!
