Yes! And I'm proud of it!

I think formal education is overrated. I mean, the demoscene is a good example of this: Most of the coders among us have taught programming to themselves, and the programs these auto-didacts have created are more impressive than anything some computer science graduates have ever made.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
So why don't you grab yourself some medical books and quit studying? I won't be your first patient for sure then.

Even for the field of computer science this isn't true. A ton of demo-effects and especially (demo-)3D-engines were/are influenced by the stuff researchers have found out during the last decades. No doubt about that democoders are much more skilled when it comes to the implementation itself than the "average" guy at the university, but without some basic knowledge about "basic"/old things you cannot compete nowadays. And getting to know such basic stuff is part of the education you'll receive. Otherwise you'll be reinventing the wheel way too often (without even knowing about).

I'm studying medicine because law requires you to have a medical degree in order to work as a physician.

Law doesn't require you to have a CS degree to work as a software developer.

And it's true some theoretical knowledge may help you in developing good software, but honestly: Do you need university to acquire such knowledge? How about simply buying books and studying them yourself, or gathering information from the Web?

not everyone is a super mensan.

oh and self-educating lacks some fundamental learning : social integration and teamwork.

besides how would people get laid and procreate without any university nor school ? :>

@Zest
IMHO an average IQ is enough to teach yourself using books. The higher the IQ, the less time you'll need to grasp new concepts, but that's all! Besides, I don't think the lectures offered by university really help "weaker" students. On the contrary, e.g. the lecture we had on "Theory of Computer Science 2" at our university was even hard to follow for me without preparing myself before at all. I had a much easier time studying the theory from books.

Well, that's not a big problem. In cities, there are loads of clubs, dancing bars etc. where you can meet the opposite sex. Many couples also find each other at work.

if decent universities would teach programming, then you'd have a point. luckily software architecting, information system design and algorithm research are all a little trickier than what's in "c++ for dummies" and on wikipedia. i could never learn what i've learnt at my university from books, not without someone to tell me which books to read and what to do with what's in it.

surely any self-taught geek can learn to code a demo, some command line linux tool or a community website. designing an extensible, maintainable and versatile information management tool for a multinational cellphone sales chain is a bit more complicated. or an autopilot for an airplane. i honestly doubt you even have the slightest clue of how complex software can get.

I agree completely. I've learned coding myself - but there's so much stuff I'm learning at the university, and just using books to learn it yourself won't work. Of course I spend much time with books and learn the theory from it. But that's not all. It's about teamwork. About people who can make you discover new ways of thinking.

Books don't interact. People do.

Wow.. I surely hope that no democoder has a daytime job that sounds as boring as this.

But otherwhise I second this. Its easy to scratch the surface of a topic by reading books on your own, but only other people will make you understand the intricacies of a topic.

It goes along the same lines of having to do your phd in something to understand how little you know. (and I am not talking about an md )

you have to read and test the Nicolas Tesla method for upgrade mind
Wasn't the topic "Riots in Hungary" somehow? ;-)

Yeah, I thought so too but it has evolved to "Libertarian geniouses only take cash from parents and not from the government because they are grown up but still children. They also learn everything that's of any use from books and don't talk to anyone else."

that's a beautiful summation. however, i would change the word 'genius' ("geniouses" :) to "IQ-champions", the two have totally different meanings, and we already have a living proof of that :)

Violator: Oh no, this is pretty cheap and in no way funny, at least for me.

Dear Everybody,

I am sorry if some of the artists still haven't received the promised free copy of Freax, but as one of the leaders of these riots, I first didn't have time for it, and later I was detained for a few days. Don't think of anything serious, just the usual violation of civil rights, etc, lawsuit is already on the way (heck, probably you heard of the police violating basic human rights en masse?)

I will soon also write a memoir about what happened, but if you heard that it was some hooligans burning cars, well, forget that.

you may be half a neonazi, but you're *OUR* neonazi! *huggle!*

Last time someone called me a neonazi I won 2000 euros in a lawsuit. :)

Well, guys. You should really forget all the bullshit about football hooligans and stuff. Even if those Hungarians say who weren't there. Watching it on TV from a continent or just a district away is quite the same.

Later this year we'll release a report book about what happened. That will also be translated to English and spread on the net. Until then, be patient.

And by the way, the media did not tell what our PM exactly said. He said, literally: "We fucked it up. We have to admit that we fucked up the entire crappy country. We lied, lied all the day, all the night, and didn't tell how we drove it to the edge of collapse." It was something like this, with these swear words.
added on the 2006-09-29 13:12:58 by tomcat tomcat
he said that in private to motivate his troops.

And the extremist opposition took this as a pretext to riot :p

anyway welcome back to free life :)

I'm happy you're on the Internet again.

The Austrian press quoted large parts of Gyurcsany's speech. So, yes, it was about like what you retold, as far as I remember.

There have been reports that Gyurcsany himself might have launched the affair by telling somebody to record his speech and release it to the public. However, that's hard to believe for me since IMHO it would be political suicide.

So I guess there was some hidden spy / double-agent at the party's convention who deliberately wanted to harm Gyurcsany and/or his party.

Anyway, the riots are understandable.
