pouët.net is dead...

category: general [glöplog]
Of course it's not and it won't die !

With the large group of mails I'm receiving each day, I'm aware of the problem pouët.net have. And I'm also aware that I can't handle the website alone anymore.

Since I left my last employer, I'm self employed under the trademark shpOOp! and I don't have the spare time I had when I was living the easy way, getting the same paycheck each month...

So what's in my mind for the future of p.net you might ask ? Well, first, it needs moderators ! It's been months I'm talking about it, and that's the first thing I'll implement. p.net has been working great without them until it's 2000th user, it's not the case anymore. Please don't ask to be a moderator for now, I'll post something when the tools will be ready.

The party data has been lost, and I fought I explained what happened, but I might have not ^^ As there are no tools for updating the p.net data, I'm doing everything with the command-line SQL client, and I fucked. That's certainly why I decided to stop maintaining p.net this way, and so that's why p.net is no longer moderated for now... =(

There are a lot of things TODO, but the main one is the admin tools w/moderators, and I'll stay you tuned on how it goes when I'll start working on it. I'm *hoping* to begin during December...

hoping you won't all get mad at me... Thanks you all

Well, it's mainly not your fault but the misuse by some lame assholes. Hopefully it returns to the old quality level when the moderators can begin their job.

lets all get serious, and stop blame analogue for this incidents, shall we?

the problem is not how pouet works, a liberal page always wins over the moderated sites , seriously , pouet lives, otherwise analogue wouldnt have gotten any emails at all.

As i said before, the problem is NOT how pouet works, the problem is demoscene , it has been sleeping for some months now, no big releases (explained by the fact that ASM was the last big party i guess) etc, so people start to find new things to do at pouet, i can assure you as soon as it comes a new party this site will go quite serious again , that is as soon as there come some new releases people are intrested of..

And about the moderation bullshit.. who is to moderate? ps? crest? the other non-active sceners? what to moderate? the forums? the releasedate/party/links etc?

for the forums i say no, it will kill the site for sure, for the prod info, i say yes! :)

but i would prefer if only the group who made the prod can modify it , and the original poster of it (if the group is no longer active, or just not pouet active) ...

i think the lame image posts under fake accounts etc are easily solved, just a little ignore option on each user for the USERS not the site, (ignore : comments, pictures, bbcode , etc)

but dont fucking set all those lame reviewers who know a shit as moderators, this site will suck as much as demoo then ;)

btw, i forgot: thank you analogue for a great site!

stefan: well, you have thrown names in the ring. I can't talk for ps but I never asked analogue or anyone else for moderating here and coz lack of money I can't stay here every day for hours.

But the moderators should be at least serious sceners for which the demoscene isn't just a timekiller between several other hobbies/interests.

Thanks for your comments, by posting at 4am, I thought I wouldn't get a reply until tomorrow, seems I was wrong ^^

A precision: the moderators will only able to moderate the prod info (prod, group, party, sshot, nfo, ...) which means their job will only be to check/remove false info.

I've been asked to moderate the talking parts of pouet many times, I think there are other websites for that purpose, so it won't be moderated. I'll only remove child-sex pics and such on those parts. By talking parts, I'm talking about the oneliner, the comments and the BBS.

I hope I'm clear enough ^^

did it take you 1 hour to read an sms (max 180 chars) or did he just waste all his money on an answering machine? :D

don't stress yourself, the scene ain't going anywhere *hint*

could you guys *please* relax with the "scene is dead" thingies? the scene has *always* been idle from august-december. This is, as stated before, due to the big parties. I don't know how everything will be this year, when TP clearly chose the gamer-side rather than the scene-side. But it's not new that the scene gets idle, just remeber the massive amount of releases made at MS,SE,ASM, etc. durring spring-summer period, don't we deserve some time to create new stuff? (without being called dead or idle or anything :)

and thanks to analogue, it might be a good idea to have some sort of user-moderator, so the amount of fake-accounts will be limited.
i'd be for disabling images altogether.

if someone has an image he absolutely needs the world to see he can still use [url] to link to it :)

go Analogue!

ps. ryg: true, true...

Oh yeah, ryg is absolutely right. Maybe some ppl just don't understand that other ppl don't want to see Penises and stuff. I mean, I am not gay. Maybe 70% of Demoscene is, but I am not. And I am not aroused by any Penis images in Forums, that's for sure.

Apropos Images: The Pouet.net Logos. Would be cool, if you could directly upload them and if they were displayed instantly. The voting system will then count every crap logo out. :Q And for more safety their would be Moderators, too.

Crest can't spend here several hours a day? Somehow, I've got a different impression... (At least I'm not in denial about the time I spend on Pouet.)

I suggested to disable the image posting long ago and nobody was listening. Looks like I'm not "famous" enough...

Btw, analouge, please read the long 'fake prods' thread. There are many ideas that are worth thinking about...

Oh, and to Mr. Lator himself,
haha, i think you are searching for geeky-demoscenewannabe-without-life >P

isn't that exactly what you are?

I like the idea of a little self-control over viewing images and user comments, but especially the latter is just NOT enough. Sure, you may be able to block a (fake) user -but you still had to endure the annoying posts at least once. Since pouet accounts are free with a pack of pretzels, you'll end up being one step behind spammers all the time -just like hotmail and yahoomail spammers: all it takes is a new login to annoy.

I'd say both moderators and self-control are in order here :)

oh...

Since I'm impartial to penis-posting (the shock value is kind of sub-zero nowadays), does that make me gay? Just nervous...

That's great news..
Just one question Analogue: What is happening with the glops. Aren't they updated automatically in the top10 screen? Does there need a moderator to click on a function "update glops" or something? Just curious first and second I would like to see them updated again oneday :)

Looking forward to a moderated pouët.net.

Many thanks to analogue for his commitment to the site despite being very busy and all that. :)

I hate explicit pornographic material on pouet.
I like forum and comment moderation.
I thought an acceptable level could be maintained without control on pouet. It proved to be utopic.

Good luck Analogue making this place moderated. I am an experienced php/mysql programmer myself, I'd be happy to offer any help.

And, last but not least, thanx for creating and providing pouet ;-)

the "you can't beat the spammers anyway" argument seems to come up every time a discussion like this is started. i think you CAN beat them.

the comparison with hotmail etc spammers is flawed: these are individuals with commercial interest. that is why they take the hassle to register new accounts, mangle their mails and disguise their identity.

what's the motivation of pouet's pr0n/fakeprod posters? attention probably. what would moderation do? yes, it will take attention away from them. will those people react by frantically creating tens of accounts and writing scripts to post a zillion silly comments? unlikely. they may be idiots, but they have a relation to the scene after all.
