Technically interresting, alas the 256px graphic mode doesn't do justice to the effect.

note to self: had I had a look at the code of your prods I could probably have saved a few bytes on Asahikawa :\

The intro uses memory that is right after the first 128k. This means that if DOS takes up too much base memory, this will crash. Try running colorfast. It uses the same allocation technique and should also crash. If it does, then that's the problem.

Yea, I've run these intros under pure DOS 6.22 - meanwhile crash, colorfast runs with disruptions, after Esc crash. But when I've loaded system without any drivers and TSR (mouse, cdrom...) then both work fine. No problems under WinXP.
