Hello Peter,
You're right, there may be a problem with the 'desktop.inf' of the A disk on some older TOS versions. I find some solutions : you can try TOS 1.62, or try to insert the A floppy after booting, or last, i put a new version of the disks on my personnal website with a compatible desktop.inf... i hope you'll success !
(warning, you need 1 Mb RAM to make if work...)
