Hey Charly!

Charly for president!
Can't believe this wasn't already added...
This contains the first fullscreen ever coded on Atari ST. The psuedo-3d scroller by TCB is also quite incredible.

One of the best atari demo ever!
:]
absolute classic.
Probably the most underrated Atari ST demo on pouet. How come this demo has so few votes?
Back in 1988 this demo was totally outstanding, one of the greatest technical breakthroughs ever on Atari (along with the Cuddly demos).

This demo is why I'm in the scene today. All the parties I've been to, all the sceners I met, I owe it to this one, the first demo I ever saw :-)
Great
StanZ: thanks for hint about hidden part!
the best!
It's old, it's dead ugly, but it's got the best (and first) Charlie ever!
=)
boy was this fresh back then..
i could even show this to my amiga friends in 89 :D
i could even show this to my amiga friends in 89 :D
That's amusing because a friend of mine who was atarist at that time showed this to me when it was out in early 89 and i remember i considered it as good as (if not better than) the megademos that were made on amiga back then. So just for the memories.
hehe, indeed amusing. union demo was always a good point against atari bashing at that time. (besides goldrunner st version, haha) that was ofcourse prior to RSI megademo. when that came out i converted to amiga :D
whateva, just forgot the friggin' thumb again.
whateva, just forgot the friggin' thumb again.
mad Mixx: indeed Goldrunner kicked ass back in 1987 :)
Goldrunner rulez trop :)
arg.
arg.
None can outrun or equal the trunk and belly of Charly.
=D lolÿ
This demo was so impressive when it was released. First main menu i can remember and the third TCB screen i still outstanding! This demo was one of the reasons i started to code 68k assembler on the ST instead of Omicron/GFA basic.
This demo showed you what your ST can do and promised more to come (e.g. the tracker).
Was really great at that time and had the cool main menu idea. Sad it does not run on STE, otherwise I could look at it again.
Its part of my personal history.

this one got pure atari oldskool style as i see it -- feels a little alien to me as i missed the scene there, but i love it nevertheless!
Raver: I guess it must look totally alien to anyone who did not take any interest in the Atari ST demoscene back then :)
This demo is probably the one that had the biggest knock-on effect ever on the Atari ST scene and that initiated a strong trend that lasted for years: megademos with mainmenus that looked like games.
As a result, too many demos tried to look like an improved Union demo afterwards, often to the detriment of new concepts.
On the other hand, that also resulted in very good things technically speaking.

Oh, my god. The Union Demo really rulez! This was one of the first demos I ever saw. TCB ruled my world for one or two years. Got damn these guys could hack!
TCB needs no customchips!
Outstanding classic oldschool demo! It should be in everyone's ST diskbox.
Holly cow! It was an outstanding effort!! Probably one of the most professional realtime-graphical applications the ST has ever seen.
A great part of demoscene-history, no shadow of a doubt!
A great part of demoscene-history, no shadow of a doubt!
However there's one thing I never figured out: what's coming out of Charly's nose? Blood? Lava? Paint? ...
this demo is the best of best i never forguet for me
Great demo.
The TCB 3D-scroller is just perfect.
The seminal one. This prod paved the way for further prods on ST and showed how clever programming could do the trick. The union rules, forever.
omg i never voted for it...
Milestone from the pioneers of our time.
Lotek: shame on you for the late vote !
Zweck: shame on you for your blabla!
ooops.. also forgot to vote for this!
Ahhh, memories!!
They were young, they were ambitious, they were good...they made the ST scene what it was and still is. Eternel respect.
fabulous, marvellous, imposing... need to say more? :)
Wow, totally cool! And that Charly dude just rocks! :D
classic sweety. watched it several times.
Can't understand why I haven't voted for it yet.
Although I saw it very late (about '97 or '98) it's still rockin' :) The TCB 3 screen is just fab!

Awesome!!!!! This was the first megademo I ever saw!!! Was it the first ever made? I saw a few single screen demos by TEX before this... Charly for Prime Minister!
LOL I never saw that it blinks the floppy LED to the music in the POV menu :D
The demo itself is really cool also :)
The demo itself is really cool also :)
excellent!
Synt4x_3rr0r: We call it "DISKDRIVE FLASHLIGHT" :) It was used quite often back in the days.
ltk_tscc: Ah I see ^^
I just recently bought an STfm so that explains alot xD
What other demos/intros have that feature? :)

Synt4x_3rr0r: I think TEX did that in the B.I.G demo or in some other intro/demo, can't remember which one.
As Lotek mentioned it, this LED thing was quite trendy around that time :)
As Lotek mentioned it, this LED thing was quite trendy around that time :)
Synt4x_3rr0r: hm well as Keops already said it was quite trendy around that time and a lot of demos did use it so I can't do a list of those at all :)
A milestone in ST demoscene history. Never to be forgotten.
rules
roxx! real ST masterpiece!!
U N I O N !
Memories...
this was the one of the first demos on atari st i saw, bring back memories! masterpiece

Piece of demo history
ZOMFG ... I didn't thumb this ... shame on me ;)
This is a massive release of course!
I remember seing this at the sync convention before it was released, we were sitting in the same room as TCB. When seeing the zoom-wobbling scroll in the TCB 3 demo that just blew my mind.

My first cdc goes to that amazing demo (the 1st one I saw) which gave me lot of inspiration to do demos myself (well on amiga but a good demo is a good demo whatever the platform). Kuddos to the pioneers !
An my real first comment on pouet goes to This one which make me understand the way to use computers : making demos ... ES was fantastic and a real good guy his gfx are Megablasting ...
Arf forget to thumb up sorry ... ;-)
yeah!
Missing thumb
Too bad some of the groups stopped releasing stuff after this demo. Some more stuff from Level 16 and TNT would have been nice :)
At that time a outstandig demo, and it still is.
Nice multi-protection booter ! :)
Nice multi-protection booter ! :)
For TNT's 3d mostly.
Don't forget : the union rules !
Hey people, check out this demo, it's one of the few milestones of the Atari ST demo history, it deserves more than a meager 84 commenst and 66 thumbs ups !
what dbug said !
20 years has passed and it still rocks.
A true classic on ST
history.
what dbug said
.
gave me a boost in coding my own stuff back in 90s... :)
Classic Atari demo how come i missed this until now :p
The begginning of all !
cool
THE UNION DEMO !

I'm ashamed not not have thumbed this one before. This demo started everyting.
/|\ Awesome! An Cool did a Falcon Remake of the parallax scroll screen
Classic
Classic of the classics, a milestone in the long history of the demoscene!
I think this is the first demo I ever saw. And it was an incredible experience. It's hard to explain how we can feel in front of this.
The Union rules ... forever. :)
The Union rules ... forever. :)
This demo set a whole new standard for demos on the ST. A true classic and milestone! Served as a source of inspiration for many of us.
One of the first demos I ever saw on ST. Left me confused and bemused, and wanted to make demos :)
It does rule.
It does rule.
what fishbone say
yeah.. it's a pity it doesn't reach BITS standards.
now go back to the basement you stupid little lamer.
now go back to the basement you stupid little lamer.
Classic <3
great
A true milestone.
Carebears rulez and a great megademo with a musicdisk at the end even more :) (First reference that comes to mind is Megaforce Megademo, maybe others?)
This is probably one of the demos a mate showed me on his ST (after I actually returned my ST to the store to buy an A500). A lot of the ones he ran had this character to walk around to start the parts, I remember and an impressive starfield in one parts (another prod). And we played Super Sprint. Good times.
And obviously Atari realized later that you need custom chips to make a good computer and put some sort of copycat chips in the STE, mwhahahh ;)

Forgotten thumb! For the state of the art standards from way back!
The best of its time!
Legendary megademo. Another early example of tracker module inclusion among the usual Mad Max tunes. Annoying loaderscreen sound but this must have been a revelation for the ST freaks at the time.
Can't believe this demo doesn't have more thumbs! It was absolutely mind blowing when it was released!
