It's not very smooth on my 286 although I don't know (yet) how easy is to pull those effects fast, but anyway I like that second screen, it would be even nicer with adlib music, but thumbs up for platform.

@all

Thx ! Music & gfx is a problem atm .. we have no musician & graphic artist ..

@Optimus

I fear you're right .. I tested it with PCem (286/16) which seems to be very near to real hardware .. it's not that smooth like Dosbox with 3000 cycles .. the unchained modes have a big overhead with setting pixel accurate positions .. next time I'll focus on getting more platform specific smoothness .. after 20 years of absence first time coding again was a real challenge ..

.. but I'll stay with i286, real mode & 16 bit is quite cool and challenging !

Works even with 286/10/VGA/no sound! Takes me back to the first 4kb intros from ASM94. Good palette fades, not so great color schemes. :)

20 years of absence is like never having coded at all, haha.
the good news is there´s the internet nowadays, so learning/getting_better is like 1000% easier than it used to be 20 years ago! :)

the colors are really too saturated, 100% codercolors, you might want to read up a bit on color-composition...had to do the same and while i still get a lot of those "coder-colors!"-comments many people seem to like my color-choices by now! :)

about intros: you might want to include graphics next, as in showing logos/fonts(for scrollers)/etc. ...without the screen feels a bit empty...you could even use graphics just for some overlays or backgrounds.

after that you want multiple screens to get towards a full demo...for this you should think about transition-effects. (simple fadings for a start maybe)

you can be happy you dont code on amiga, where you´d need to write a trackloader next, unless you want to juggle available RAM forever, haha.

Plasma part is way too long and spoils the intro for me. Second part is nice.

Errm, wat? It's perfectly possible to load data without a trackloader.

cute little intro :) i like how it fades out at the beginning and boing-restores the screen after finishing. i also like the true-to-the-roots real mode no fpu way. plasma colors could be more eyefriendly and sound would be nice of course. that said, have a thumb anyway =)

@TheMechanist: I am wondering what video modes you are using. Is it regular mode13h or you change something like resolution or frequency? Does it use ModeX or another similar?

I am asking because I just set up a 386 with a Tseng Labs ISA gfx card that might be faulty. It displays fine VGA or my ModeX plasma, but flips or flickers totally parts of the graphics in other things I tried, like your demo or when I set up 640*480 screen in qbasic, or wolfenstein3d. Probably some memory is corrupt. I am just curious because originally I thought your demo is regular mode13h, I just want to find what makes the gfx card fail.

it's modeX 360x200 "unchained" ;-) - better resolution for modern 16:9 displays.. if I remember correctly for this mode there are frequency changes necessary .. but it works flawlessly on real - modern hardware - .. tested it on my ICore Thinkpads and Desktops with real MSDOS ..
