a character demo from a game triton was working on, which was later cancelled. its lightyears ahead of quake as far as I can see (quake was released 1996, this demo 1995). it refused to play music on my gus today, and I don't remember how it sounded, although I'm quite certain it was good :)

Ah, Into The Shadows, the game that could've made Triton millions if they just knew how to produce and market it. Oh well, I'm just they're doing fine! :)

Um. Make that "I'm sure they're doing just fine". (wasted glop)

Cool! I haven't seen this one in a long while! If I remember correctly, it had some nice shadow-casting routines etc. and it still ran OK on my 486 (or maybe I had my P90, but still..) back then - that's some nice code.
rulez added on the 2001-06-07 09:00:13 by Sdw Sdw
never got it to work on my box.

But people: this is a GAME demo. I know Triton is/was a scene group, but if this is gonna lead to reviews of Jazz Jackrabbit or Zone 66, I'm gonna be reeeeally disappointed =)
added on the 2001-07-31 17:54:54 by Shifter Shifter
this one was surely a quake killer... wicked code in here!

i agree on the fact that it was a game demo but it's a realtime, non-interactive 3D show ain't it? so we could then ban 99.9% of todays demos!! :)
rulez added on the 2001-11-21 18:37:43 by brioche brioche
Anyway, the reason it never got finished was because their publisher (Scavenger) went belly-up.

I remember running this on my 486, and being totally amazed...
Too bad the game never got released.

yeah this one is so great =) it worked on my 486 too, Starbreeze is fuckn awesome, I saw some documentary about the a few weeks ago but none of the old leetos was there, but I think I spotted lizardking somewhere

It's a pitty that one of the coders is still fighting to release a game under the Starbreeze company and there were still cancels of it's games as I have read, again because of financial reasons. And definiteally a shame this technicall masterpiece was canceled near the end :(

It's really sad that quake killer never came out.
rulez added on the 2004-02-13 13:30:04 by p01 p01
This was a pretty cool gamedemo, even though I don't think it would've be a quake killer...

But too bad it did get finished...

It should be noted that the reason its publisher (Scavenger) went belly-up is because Scavenger's distributor (GT Interactive) never paid it for Scorcher or Amok. They ran for about 2 or 3 years with literally NO income, and then went under and GT kept all their money.

I remember that game-demo was the better code ever when it was released, better than all commercial games of the same era.

I'd love to make a proper resolution/encoded video, but sadly I can't run it... :'(
Does anyone have more info about compression encryption or is it just their own DOS extender that is at the start of the file?
added on the 2010-05-27 10:19:04 by raer raer
It is compressed with "PKLITE". Still doesn't run after unpacking though... DOSBox complains about "Invalid link state 5800 when reconfiguring MCB chain"

This demo supposedly works with some special build of dosbox (and/or the megabuild?).
Other than that, it's just really amazing what they pulled off in 1995 ... visually this certainly is on par with quake. I think I've read somewhere that the gameworld was only supposed to be 2.5D.
Either way, shame this never made it to a full game/playable demo.
rulez added on the 2010-06-16 20:54:18 by shock__ shock__
Would have been a classic, great game.

Blow me literally away. It's amazing to watch old demos drunk and get inspiration from them.

Excellent.

I remember when I saw this the first time, it really made me drop my jaw! And not just me!!
For me a evergreen of great software 3D rendering of its time, way ahead of any commercial software!
rulez added on the 2011-03-25 07:50:18 by Apollo Apollo
By the way, you can get it to run under DosBox v0.73 if you download the patch from here: http://pferrie2.tripod.com/misc/dosbox.htm.
Segfault is then gone and all 4 characters are presented, not just 3 like in the DosBox hack!

Does anybody know who to contact for the source code of this demo?
I'd love to peek into the code. This looks so stunning.

Really would have made literally millions back then in 1995. I'm actually still drooling over the graphics and the awesome character animations.

Would have kicked Tomb Raider and Resident Evil right out of the ring with the right finishing =)

Performance is ok'ish,
I can see on a Pentium 125 MHz that it doesn't run perfectly smooth in some scenes anymore. But hey September 1995 :-). A month later Hexen was released.
