Had to kill some optimizations and some polish due to size. Might do a final addressing those issues :)

Loved this, really innovative lighting and awesome scene composition. Great stuff :D

Great 4k!

Very lovely production. I second the bit on the lighting.

Nice style and lighting.

Best in the compo. Superb rendering and lighting. The music kinda sucked, sound-wise especially, but for obvious reasons. Another prod that pushes the bar for me. It's getting quite brutal out here (heh).

Visually really appealing, but the track was not for me.

The lightning is convincing! And that says a lot. Thumbs up for that :)

That looked sooo nifty!

I liked the visuals. If you are going to do a final remember to hide the cursor.

I get a white screen with music by the way, so I assume the shader didn't compile. Running on Radeon 270.

Really enjoyed this small intro with the lightning. Have some YouTube

Had its moments, especially with the daylight scenes. Sound was a bit flat though.

nice visuals but it is another proof to me that pc prods nowadays are complete anthitesis of good code and use of brute force methods (like powerful gpu). slow.
added on the 2016-03-29 15:43:52 by comankh comankh
comankh: uh, it's not exactly feasible to implement more efficient solutions into 4 kilobytes. Not that this is brute force anyway, that would imply some kind of naive path tracer which this certainly isn't. I don't know how this works exactly, but I'm sure it's a bag of clever but quite crude approximations that also rely on visual trickery to get the impression right (and with that said I'd be interested in hearing about the tech behind this :)).

This was a substantial improvement to the already stunning Stone Pavilion from last year. Don't think I've ever seen such 'natural' colorspace in a 4k. Deserved winner.

First, thanks for the nice comments.

Second, sadly party version won't run on AMD, I had to kill compatibility at the last minute, I'll do a final with that fixed.

And about the lighting/performance. It's actually one bounce of light, computed in lower res, upsamped using a bilateral filter. I could just have computed it full res, which would have given me at least 200 extra bytes, but then it would only run on a top of the line GPU. In the end, this is a 4k, so there's compromises that you have to do :)

A pleasure to meet you guys once again.
I hope we'll meet again next year!
Congratulations!

This speaks to me. Great architecture and lighting. In the end the music worked well enough even though the patches (and composition!) were very cheap.

killer & what ferris said!

A really nice looking 4k! And I like the music too. :)
rulez added on the 2016-03-29 23:48:25 by StingRay StingRay
Visuals rocked big time and out stood the music clearly (which I'd love to be more atmospheric, the bass is fine but the pads are improvable). All in all a really nice show though. Hmmm. Would love to do a remix of that tune... :)

Brilliant lighting, and nice to see some solid geometry again, but the rest was a bit meh.
rulez added on the 2016-03-30 22:08:06 by kb_ kb_
This is really great. I wish there was space for ambient occlusion though. Still a great 4k and a rightful winner.

Fantastic all the way. Lovely architecture and lighting.
rulez added on the 2016-03-31 13:56:53 by Preacher Preacher
Really loved this architectural prod; should have been shown later IMO and delighted it won. Let down by a couple of ever so slightly weaker scenes, but the majority is first rate. The moment where the skylights open and the blue sky is revealed is really powerful.
rulez added on the 2016-03-31 23:17:19 by Fell Fell
übernice 4k which does not feel like 4k at all.

Didn't loose by being watched again, still great and not-so-4k'ish looking. Music is somewhat cheap, and better tonemapping (dunno if you have any post) would have helped on the directly lit surfaces, became a bit flat.

Absolutely fabulous lightning, materials and music! So cool!

Congrats!!
A real demo style down to 4k!!
Sincerely a sweet experience, watching a 4k intro that's not a slide show of shaders!

The music it's ok for a 4k. it fits somehow.

keep thinking this is an 8K, managed to squeeze so much mileage out of that geometry

One of my favs from the party.

Excellent in all areas. The GI is awesome and is demonstrated in just the right way. It's also quite fresh when compared to the usual set of techniques seen in 4k's these days.

rulez added on the 2016-08-14 19:31:32 by fyrex fyrex
Just uploaded a final version, that has:

  • Fixed synchronization
  • Fade-ins/fade-outs
  • Ambient Occlusion
  • Hides mouse cursor
  • 2x faster than the party version
  • Works on AMD GPUs
  • It's 7 bytes smaller than the party version

It's, on the visual side, what I wanted before I had to kill some stuff due to last minute optimizations.

...and then the roof opens and the sun is shining! Just beautiful!
rulez added on the 2016-12-12 19:50:39 by Venty Venty
I remember liking this during the compo. But now that I've watched it at home, I realize it's a lot better than I already thought.

The core idea of the roof opening works really well, especially so thanks to the smokin' GI that really sells the natural light feeling. On top of it, the attention to detail: the glow, the marble plates, the shapes laying on the ground; all work together to solidify the prod.

But what really knocks it out of the park is the direction. The perspective is carefully used to build up tension and the music creates the expectation. Then when the climax comes in it completely delivers.

Well done.

The first 50 seconds made my ears bleed and I was getting ready to press escape, but then it got better, and better, and better again. Very impressive visuals.
