A little trivial PETSCII editor I made mostly for myself in Processing (you need to run it from the IDE as of now). Anyway, here it is in case someone else needed one to do their Z00'13 compo pic :) Might add new features later. The pictures are saved as C source files that can be used with, say, cc65. Assembly output is trivial to add in case someone needs it.

New features: asm output and self-contained asm viewer (Acme format), support for remapping PETSCII order for the char selector.
added on the 2013-09-28 23:09:16 by Marq Marq
Greatly improved copypaste + simple 1/4 char drawing mode (press alt).

Excellent tool. If I ever finally get around doing that animated PETSCII demo I've been thinking about for years now, this is what I'd build the tool on :)

Good to see there's some use for it. The package is constantly updated, now there are improvements again. VIC-20 mode should be a piece of cake to add. Undo is in the works, too, but not today anymore :)
added on the 2013-09-29 22:27:59 by Marq Marq
Preliminary VIC-20 support added, some speedups and code cleanup, too.
added on the 2013-09-30 10:24:19 by Marq Marq
Typing mode (press enter), PET support, intelligent horizontal flipping of brush, improved VIC-20 support, user-specified hooks for coders ...
added on the 2013-09-30 22:34:27 by Marq Marq
Finally comes with an undo function (little tested so far) plus some minor additions such as more logical key mapping and info display about colors/chars.

Marq: have I told you lately how much I love your approach to software development. Well, I'm telling it now. Keep up the good work.

I have no idea how to run it, please help O.o
added on the 2013-10-02 10:53:19 by aki aki
Visy: Well, thx, although I think the code is starting to turn into a big unmanageable mess :)

Factor6: Install Processing, copy it to the sketchbook directory and run from the IDE. There will be a standalone version soonish, as soon as the feature set is somewhat complete.
added on the 2013-10-02 13:37:59 by Marq Marq
Eh. Should be "copy the petscii directory to the sketchbook diretory". See petscii.pde for instructions - there will be some more here shortly: http://www.kameli.net/marq/?page_id=2717.
added on the 2013-10-02 13:40:46 by Marq Marq
I copied the unzipped "petscii" directory to the sketch directory, launched Processing and when I press (>) (run) button, it stops and writes:
case VIC20: vic20_setup(); break;
and
"the function vic20_setop() does not exist." error.
the sketch directory is c:\users\username\documents\processing\

There was a broken file for a while, so redownload the zip and delete the old petscii directory. My bad.

Nice to see this tool!
BB Image
But i'll wait for a standalone version before testing / thumbing up...
added on the 2013-10-05 18:06:38 by baah baah
Aaand we have a standalone release! Only JRE needed. Probably a few bugs here and there, but I'll iron them out as the years pass. The download link is the same.

Cool, and here's the well deserved thumb! :D

Plus/4 support available in the beta. Needs a bit of testing before it's made available in the main version.

Just added: multiple frame / animation features. Playing back the animations on a real machine is up to you so far, but perhaps one day...

Should be noticeably faster now. Other little improvements: more coherent eraser, bugfixed BASIC exporters, binary works on modern OS X versions.
added on the 2015-10-17 08:34:25 by Marq Marq
Finally a new mainstream binary release with the following major improvements:

  • Heavily reduced CPU use
  • Space toggles selection on and off
  • Finally a Clear button
  • Merge lets you combine animations/images
  • Smaller exported .prg files
  • Preliminary SEQ export (thanks to Six for help)
  • Arbitrary image sizes from 1x1 up - as long as you have big enough screen
  • Lowercase chars supported on the C-64 and Plus/4 (right click on the char selector)
  • Frame-specific undo
  • Improved animation thumbnails
  • More responsive char/color selector
  • More robust image loading across the platforms
  • More robust Preview - shouldn't crash anymore
  • Bigger file selector windows(!)
  • All in all, a big internal overhaul, a number of bugfixes plus probably a few new bugs too

A new version out today with a hefty amount of improvements ranging from less crashing to C-64 flicker colors.
added on the 2017-11-07 15:34:21 by Marq Marq
A brand new version with the following improvements:

  • New buttons, improved button layout
  • Exported .prgs can be imported back (C-64 and Plus/4 only)
  • The reference picture is reloaded when converting it to PETSCII if it has changed – this will speed up conversions a lot
  • Stick characters can be grown and shrunk by pressing up/down
  • More reliable undo
  • Improved SEQ output
  • Non-standard picture sizes work with the frame selector properly
  • GUI text stands better out from the border color (VIC-20 and Plus/4 in particular)
