One of the first tracker under windows (iirc) ...
a lot of great features like setting keyboard to FT2 mode or IT mode, VST, save as mp3 (bad quality btw) and some others options....
rulez added on the 2004-09-05 11:28:34 by Stv Stv
This is not made by a scener, nor used by much sceners. Also it's actually an open source project these days. But I guess when you add ft2 and it2, some people are tempted to add everything that smells like a tracker. So go on and add madtracker and renoise, buzz and psycle. *cough*

Anyway, to do this software justice: A lot of file formats well supported, you can open and edit multiple songs at once, also it's the first(?) tracker with rudimentary VST support etc.

On the other hand, it exploits common file formats like XM by including stuff that goes beyond the original specs, making it troublesome to process mpt saved xm/it files in other mod players or the original editors.

(Oh, and saving to mp3 directly is silly, render your song into a normalised wave and use an external app for mp3/ogg conversion).

no offense but, please, you dont use it, ok but i know some sceners who use it... i don't use FT2 and i see no problems to add it to pouet as it's a tracker like ModPlug Tracker

A tracker (or more precisely, a music sequencer with a tracker interface) is not a scene tool per definition. As said, with the same argument you could add commercial tools like renoise too. That's why I added only trackers that have been made by sceners or scene groups (st3/fc, ft2/triton, amusic/elyssis...).

But don't get mad about it: The whole demotool category is messed up anyway. ;)

probably one of the most ugly trackers that ever saw the light of the day. not even changing the layout helps much, as the whole pattern arrangement-thing is totally whack.

Actually nowadays I do all my tracking work with this. It is not that usable, but afaik it's the only windows tracker that has pretty much only the basic stuff and pretty good support for all the common formats and even filter envelopes on IT, which were available only registered version of impulse tracker. And you get used to the interface over time.

Well, if people would ask me I would say none of the trackers should be in this category. I only added IT because people had already added the other big ones.

its not buggy, as much as i've been using it, if something's buggy, it's buzz!

rulez added on the 2004-09-05 12:41:38 by raver raver
just to point out something obvious, buzz was made by a scener, used by sceners (i mean for demos) and unmistakenably scenish.. so it'd be perfectly legitimate here :)

- multiple modules at once
- windows compatibility
- VST support
- MOD/XM/IT/S3M support
enough reasons to use it.

very useful tool for mod composers on modern pcs, and the best tool for tracking with ur proaudio-external-asio box imo. =)
muffles a bit comparing to bass.dll, but who cares. very flexible and not buggy at all. use f1 for details. =)

It doesn't replay .mod correctly.
It doesn't replay .s3m correctly.
It doesn't replay .xm correctly.
And i'm pretty sure it doesn't replay .it correctly either.
It can't convert .mod to .xm correctly (600/a00/etc commands are handled differently).

Oh and it's not even able to save the simple .mod format correctly (non looping samples should have 1 as loop length or every noise/protracker & replays on amiga will crash when trying to handle a module saved with this crap).
sucks added on the 2008-02-15 15:57:50 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
You bet it doesn't play .IT correctly. If I were into the act of pulling out hair out of frustration, I would've been a baldhead by now :).

Also the interface sucks.

And the possibility to use DirectX filters on your mods might sound like a superficially nice feature, but it breaks compatibility.

I could go on, but at this stage we're already well into "sucks" territory.

Also hitchhikr, please do not rely on what other people tell you and try out the latest (open) version of MPT to check what it plays wrong (if at all). A lot of bugs have already been fixed in the last few years.
Quote:
A lot of bugs have already been fixed in the last few years.

But what's the point on continuing to work on an obsoleet tool? :|
There's virtually no need for traditional tracked music nowadays. Even the cheapest phones can handle streamed music. Unless you're making music for watches or something. And even watches can play MP4 now.
sucks added on the 2009-03-07 18:45:33 by xernobyl xernobyl
Obsolete? Is renoise also obsolete then, just because it uses a vertical tracker instead of a horizontal sequencer?
Once again: Do not rely on what other people tell you and try it out yourself, and you'll see that MPT is not only an oldskool tracker which people can use to create e.g. oldskool chiptunes, but you can also use it to create "professional" (how I hate that expression) music with VST overload. Just because mobile phones can handle mp4, does that mean that people don't want to listen to chiptunes anymore?! Seriously, WTF!!!
I'm talking about openmpt, first hand testimony.

Latest version: May 27, 2007

No that doesn't miss the point, openmpt pretends to play a shitload of formats but can't handle a single one correctly.
When a tool is converting from a format to another it tries to convert as much as possible, especially in that case where it's perfectly possible, so that's a bug.

In this archive there's 3 modules, 2 of them are fucked up when replayed with openmpt:

ftp://ftp.scene.org/mirrors/hornet/code/audio/docs/fmoddoc2.zip
Don't come back until they're replayed perfectly.

Renoise has effects, supports VSTs, and it's main purpose is to export high quality streamed music, not use the files as their saved by the program.
I guess it's a lot of fun for a musician to be seting reverbs, filters, params in general, having to remember by heart 2^16 commands for each effect and having to code them by hand without any kind of automatism.
added on the 2009-03-07 19:59:11 by xernobyl xernobyl
It's not good for making "modern" music because it's very limited and has no good vst support. It's not very good for making classic tracker music either because it seems to play some of the formats wrong. I never liked the interface, especially the pattern editor awkward to me. Still I use it for finetuning my songs and such. Piggy

Renoise is better, at least for me. But unlike Renoise, it will run with several VSTs going at once on my limited little laptop. I think OpenMPT (as it is now) has to be taken for what it is, instead of as a direct competitor for Renoise or Milkytracker, both of which I also use. Thumb because I find it somewhat useful.

I find the GUI ugly and not really convenient to use.
But it can read/write modules in many formats, it plays them correctly , and it sounds really good.

Maybe ModPlug is not compatible but without this tracker I wouldn't have started making modules.
rulez added on the 2010-08-19 09:38:14 by Jakim Jakim
Gosh, i hate that interface, anyway it was helpfull for some productions i've written past years.
I use it, not OpenMPT but an older version of MP Tracker (1.16.0203 made in 2002). All my PC-made tunes have been made with this one (chiptunes) and Renoise (normal tunes).

OpenMPT has terrible key mapping and doesn't replay my tunes the proper way. I never use VST or anything which wasn't in Amiga. For this and added effects I prefer Renoise.

The version of Modplug I have supports the exact same effects as Protracker 2.3d which I used the most on the Amiga except for my oldest tunes, so it's also the best replayer I've found for my Amiga musics. Protracker 2.3d had unique effect combinations which meant bad support from most replayers around and coders should be told to use this replay routine, or there were music bugs in intros.

So the version of MPTracker I use is compatible with Protracker 2.3d replay routine, except that last one must be modified to support more than 4 voices. I never tried anything else than .mod format, but I use often 8 voices for echo/reverb manual effects.

Outside of chiptunes, Renoise is and remains the best tracker tool around. But it's proprietary, badly plays old modules, and is a full screen utility. Modplug is great also for its windowed mode which lets me doing whatever I need to do at the same time. And the version I use never bugs.

...with the difference that OpenMPT's key mapping is fully configurable (unlike ModPlug Tracker's) and comes with the same presets as MPT 1.16 (MPT classic / IT / FT2...). ;)

Also, OpenMPT's playback is more compatible with other trackers, but if something doesn't play right in your opinion, feel free to post a bug report instead of complaining somewhere else, thanks. ;)

would be great seeing trackers like this supporting ascii-based formats, like that one VortexTracker uses, since that for me it is very useful and handy being able to edit compositions with text editors as well - for an equivalent to .mod format i would propose something like http://pastebin.com/raw/64T0jVJZ - and the versions based on .it, .s3m, etc., would be quite similar - what do you all think, and how/where can we propose such format? (btw, i tried to start issuing a MilkyTracker bug at https://github.com/Deltafire/MilkyTracker/issues/44 )
Greatest tracker tool ever! I keep it up to date currently and use for playing back 99% of time!
Great thanks to authors!

nitrofurano: This is not the OpenMPT issue tracker, but anyway:
Are you aware that OpenMPT's clipboard format is entirely text-driven? You can copy patterns to the clipboard, paste it into a text file, edit it and paste it back again into OpenMPT if you really need to.
But entirely text-driven module formats? With samples encoded as hex or base-64 bloating the file size without contributing anything to the readability or editability of the module? Nope, that's not gonna happen. You are welcome to convert MOD files to whatever you like for your own editing purposes, but I see no point in establishing yet another format that noone (except you) will use.
Why would you want to edit a module in a text editor anyway when you already have trackers?
well what can i say....

Absolutely best sample-based tracker for Windows (and Wine). Easy to learn and use yet versatile, very accurate playback engine, and clean, native looks. Also has some unique capabilities like loading VST plugins, which makes it a step closer to a DAW. My all-time fav tool for classic sampled modules

I didn't use very much this tracker as I prefer MilkyTracker and the new FastTracker II clone. But this is undeniably a great tracker, it's still improving with each new version, it's one of the few that support VSTs and it can load (and export) to a lot of formats.

Thumbs up and keep the good work!
