I don't think the title is representative of our society, but oh well.
hells yes
new spaceballs demo new spaceballs demo new space (falls off chair)
awesome, after they found a working amiga
Pretty cool demo :)
Nice
Cool effects and massive soundtrack :)
I can feel your kindness.
Capture please :)
Cool! I'll test it on 060/50 (I saw it on emulator) in a few hours.
Few things could be better for start a thursday than find new Amiga demos! ;)

BTW is the throat singing by Hanggai band?
video
didn't see it on actual hardware so kinda curious how fast it runs but happy to see some cool new effects for change. def rulez.
the music wasn't my cup of tea unfortunately.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFMlQeS2Pu4
Not too found of the music - but instathumb of the trademark attitude and kickass effects!
Not my cup of tea either. But the effects rock, especially the clouds at the start.. I thought they were some kind of volumetric cloud effects at first. Stunning stuff.
Slummy, my comments are on ADA but the thumb goes here.
great stuff as usual
SICKOS!
way too good for Amiga!
didnt work under WinUAE btw ( assigned all the RAM possible, but after the intro-screen ( We are Spaceballs! you are not! ) it went and stood black! )
MOAR! use tEiS as a musician next time!

Shoonay: Thanks for the youtube vids!
If anyone has the chance to capture this from a real amiga as well (060/50mhz or preferrably 66mhz) it would be great! Our vhs-cams are unfortunately all being serviced atm..
This final version is quite close to what was shown in the compo at Datastorm. Some tweaks have been done to the effects in the top-left and bottom-right parts of the screenshot, and several ugly glitches between parts have been removed together with some other bugs.

What 4Mat said. Pardon me whilst I go and take a cold shower. NEW SPACEBALLS DEMO!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlescOGygV8
Alternate youtube, this one should be slightly more precise than the incredibly fast one by Shoonay :)

Couldn't get it to work under WinUAE myself. Tried everything but either got it too slow or crashing WinUAE (WinUAE has stopped working etc). But video from Shoonay was much appreciated!
Watched right now in Winuae.. Awesome one, loved the clouds in the beginning, and the rest of the effects where also nice - good choice of music :) Thumb up for this :)
you cannot escape the kindness from strangers!
Great smoke effects. Well done!
menace threatened to kick my ass if i didnt...
Spaceballs, touching.
great fx!
Wow, those particle stuffs.. :O
Le Awesomé!
Awesome shit! Effects, music, mood, I like it all alot!
Good to see the old Slumdog back in bidnezz ;)
Good to see the old Slumdog back in bidnezz ;)
Me likes "unlimited cubes" effect, smoke effect, twister with voxel and cube zoomer fx. Also very nice and kind shponglish soundtrack!
impressive
ossom
Runs slick on the real thing. Massive tune and outstanding Kung-Fu
Burning churches.
Greatness.
Awesome effects and great demo.
Some decent effects, but their presentation is so damn ugly! The demo has zero design and absolutely no flow or cohesion.
The tune is fantastic! :)
great fx, the first smoke scene stuff is fantastic!
Great demo, the smoke effect is really nice.
Yay for norwegian kindness :)
Fucking love it.
Good stuff.
Good show
;)
impressive effects!
Great presentation! Awesome, different music!
damn nice
How did I miss this?? Sick!
. you're slummy - we're not .
lovley! well... LOVLEY!
ihan paska
Cool. Lacks some important details in the presentation and design imo. The static dithering in the displacementmap in the cloud scene is a shame - you could at least have animated it :)
Otherwise fresh demo!
Otherwise fresh demo!
!
Cool effects!
Nice stuff.
most excellent!
nice colors and effects
Very very nice!
Good!
Nice effects, but what Wade said, no design, no backgrounds, that very pity. But anyway there are some original ideas never done on Amiga before and music just rocksl. Thumb up for sure ;o)
what Wade said
nice effects but the demo is just boring
nice effects but the demo is just boring
rocks for sure!
Maytz: I don't know how you newschool PC kids do things but I can guarantee that there's no displacement maps in the cloud part. :)
However, there is a static color overlay (2 bitplanes) which is indeed a bit too visible / creates aliasing. I did consider animating it or toning down the color gradient to make it less visible (like in some of the other parts of the demo), but never got around to it.
Annoyingly these overlays also seem to create visible banding on *some* displays and projectors (most visible in the cloud and meta-grid-thingie parts), which I'll need to look into if I ever reuse this technique. For now you'll just have to pretend this is how things work on Amiga ;)

@Korvkiosken: well, newschool pc kid - dunno about that - been on the amiga platform since 1989 :) - but using af lookup table (displacementmap) could easily have been used for colors and position.
Maybe doing the dithering inlined in the c2p, as Blueberry explain here could be a way to it?
Still cool demo :)

Maytz: It's a *static overlay* that never even exists in the chunky buffer, so there's no need whatsoever for baking it into the c2p since it already comes for free. :)
As for the displacement maps; I dare you to do a similar effect using the techniques you mentioned. ;)
Anyway, I'm turning into one of those 'tards who turn prod comments into forum threads.. :(

Korvkiosken: haha, I would never take up that challenge, since I'm growing old and lazy - very lazy, actually so lazy the everything beoynd MSVC take up to much of my time :)
fun!
johogy rules
Ok.
awesome!
Awesomesauce!
awesome ! Can't wait to watch on real hardware !
Yep, awesome!
GOOD!
Really great... But I would really prefer to see Datastorm's #1 and #2 put together to see an AMAZING Amiga demo of the YEAR!!!!!
Great soundtrack.
great fx, for sure
I found Ephi's demo more entertaining, but this is still worth my thumb (expecially g00b's sounds...)
This is great! sync! music! effects! and it also looks good! Rare on Amiga these days ;) I do hope slummy never gets a computer job again! :D Maybe we will see more of this greatness then :)
Great.
Please, release the SOUNDTRACK alone.

Manwe: Already on Lug00ber's page: http://lug00ber.m0f0.net/demoscene/
The fat kids approve this production! AWESOME!
Not bad. :)
top
Even better video capture (no lags, perfect sync) : YouTube.
Really great!
I'm not into Amiga at all but this one rocks.
cool demo with a weird track
Nice demo and nice suprise, watched with Ephidrena demo from 2nd place gives one solid good demo :) Great soundtrack! :-)
Music! Style!
Ha...
Fueled with fisk meat...and smell of burning churches...
The Rome's represents when arrived, burnt a lot of native to-nature-connection sculptures, holy woods and trees... Let they return now where they came from!
Great music, but do not feel, personally the northlands' spirit. Rather Tibetan's meditation one.

Das ist alles so AWESOME!
Slummy kindness! <3
Awesone production. The Amiga doesn't seem to have limits!
Nice
Just generic Spaceballs demo. Watch. Delete. Forget. Doesn't you guys have any graphicians in Norway? Demo stripped from graphics is just some mediocre coder pr0n :(
Forgot my thumb - sorry guys, but these effects deserves better design skills.
It's really great demo, thanks Spaceballs!
Azzaro: hopefully NOT mwi-like design skills. Better let it be "just" generic Spaceballs demo.
all those people bitching about "has no design" definitely have no clue.
design != overlays/background images
fresh stuff, slummy rules.

awesome music
nice one!
@jok: I mean any design or effect concept. Comparing to Ephodrena entry this looks like silly 4k intor on pc. Sorry, not my cup of tea.
"silly 4k intro on pc" -- well.. odd comparison. i do agree that it's a bit low on grapical content but it looks intentional (focus on effects, not on overlays) and stuff moves around nicely
that said, in terms of "type of demo" it's not comparable to the 2nd ranking demo
basically what spike said about design !equals overlays :)

Pure fx demo !
AMIIIIGGGAAA
Vey good demo :3
Some great effects in there, but not a demo ill remember.
Very very nice, and awesome music as well :)
True performance at all levels :).

Have you seen Mwi demos? They're among the best designed demos on the Amiga!
Obviously, you work to your strengths. The coder here is clearly not a designer, but has made some great effects. The upshot is that it will impress a lot of coders, the downside is that it doesn't appeal as much to the designers/artists.
good one
VERY nice!
gr8 tune!
@PRM - it works under WinUAE. Just make A4000 with some RAM and run it under OS3. I can give You my .uae config file, of You wish.
wow!!! very superb stylish prod! why not comments???
unbeliever^x7m has written news about it at the facebook.com . thanks unbeliever

wade: sorry, i disagree. the selection of colors, lighting/shading, and progression of effects in this demo for me clearly are design aspects. and slummy did them well.
just because it has a black backround doesn't make it a badly designed demo.
good stuff
i smell some pimped friday at 8 routines...
Wonderfull !
I jizzed out of my ears :D
Surprising comeback. The nice look and the ass-kicking, fresh soundtrack by lug00ber make me thumb this up...
good stuff
Cheers!
yes!
It looks great - cool and consistent.
It sounds great - Unusual and well balanced.
It feels great.
In other words, i like it.

Great stuff & great music as well ... but yes, could have been even better with some more design. Very good job anyway !
Awesome!!
I really can't stand the soundtrack (in fact, it makes me bloody wanna kill someone ;D) but the rest is pure awesomeness. Ace code and who cares about design when the effects are that cool?
cool
rocks
I like it a lot.
Joda....
good!
ace
At first, I was like "it's beautiful, it sounds good, but some effect are a bit under-powered in those GPU times" And then I saw vanilla plateform="Amiga AGA". my jaws were 6 feet under, together with my coder-pride. H-O-L-L-Y K-I-T O_o
Visual design left me a bit cold, but effects were good and music was a pleasant and unexpected surprise.
Very cool.
Good ideas there
Forgotten thumb
black backgrounds.
Forgotten thumb
what moozooh said some lines above, the whole design with black and empty background make this prod a bit sad, but code and music is great, so thumb up!
Cool! :)
Spacious Balls does not let down.
great!
Funny soundtrack, fresh ideas.
Fucking great. Sorry for using the F-word but hey, this is brutally nice. On the other hand, I've been having a few beers and maybe I'm not that well-balanced but who cares? Now I'm off to sleep.
The cloud part is extremely impressive. Original music too.
Demo without any significant theme but with really nice effects.
One of my favorite Spaceballs demos. Delicious soundtrack and ossom effects.
How have I not thumbed this!!
Same here
Whow. Proud to be Norwegian when I see this. Spaceballs rulez!
absolutely hilarious.. and the soundtrack with Mongolian through singing.. especially after quite recent discovery of the Hu band.. I simply love it.
Great!
what can I say? few animations played back, mp3 played back, zero coding... and what I used to value demos for? the coding! mainly coding. music, grafix, design also, but not other way. any other way of "making demo done" than writing, is barbarianism and has nothing to do with heritage of civilisation, culture and science of Europe. soon we gonna get soapbulbs generated by curving the time-space, or same as usual, single slice of chewing gum produced at expense of blowing up the whole universe. back to school dudes!

that comment has very similar energy to the embarrassing shit I used to write back when I was a moron too
Without this 3am energy the scene will stop
Fantastic.

Naaay... clearly this "demo" - mongolian singing played back of an audio track (not a module), clouds and flying cubes played back of animation, not a computed in real time. (Amiga can not calculate this many operations per second and everything is strongly limited, so... clouds? beaucoup of transparency cubes? really?)
that's what I am talking about. it's not a coding it's renders being played back. just a set of players, no intelectual riddles at all...
since coding is most important in demo art - there my negative vote goes.
no coding here - you can play animations back in Amos. this demo (and plenty of other ones like this one) shouldn't be presented in demo category, but weird or anim instead.
seriously! back to coding guys!
Quote:

Yes, we used a streamed soundtrack (not mp3, but close enough for this conversation) in this demo. I'm not sure what this would have to do with anything other than your fetishization of mods.
As for the coding aspect of the soundtrack: I didn't code the streaming music player used here, nor would I have coded a mod player if we had used a module. :)

Just because you don't understand something it doesn't mean that it's an animation. :)
The "clouds" are made from several (I think it was six) layers of blended grid expanders / grid interpolators (the thing that most of those late-90's tunnels were done with).
The hard part here (for me, at least) was finding a texture that worked well, parametrizing the movement & distortion so that it looked "like smoke", and then making it all run fast enough.
Part of that last bit was rendering the 6 layers at lower resolution and then doing some upscaling tricks to make it look slightly better than plain nearest-neighbour 2x2.
I'm assuming the "flying cubes" you mention is the next part (the one after "we are spaceballs..."). This is an old trick, used in tons of late-90s PC demos and a few Amiga demos from the same era.
Simply render some 3d objects to a few offscreen buffers and then use those buffers to draw scaled 2D "software sprites / point sprites / billboards / <find your own terminology>".
"Back to school", indeed.

You're an animation!!
I was about to say that this is one of the better Amiga 060 demos from recent years until I realized it’s >11 years old. Ouch. Still feels fresh though.

is this a photon alt-account

I hope this is an idea for some killer demo. That promised demo for Revision 2023 mentioned in other Laffik's comments. Good luck with that.
Quote:

Good! Demo is already ready and buzzing! And believe me, even on superfast emulation on PC "simple" phong routine is barely doing 25 FPS. That gives, or rather proves what I had already - the sense of Amiga capabilities. This sense honks that I am cheated with "Norwegian Kindnes" and whatever it is, it's not a realtime.
Even according to official Amiga Source Development Kit and all hardware guides, there's no hardware implementation of grid expanders/grid interpolators, so It would have been coded and performed by processor on Chip memory and planar playfields - no god damn way it can be done without prerenders.
Sure I don't know everything and if you really made it you can take my rant as a huuuge compliment. That would be told if I believed in what I see.
Maliciously, Revision 2023 will be organized in Germany and so far I haven't heard anything about possibility of contributing remote entries. Is it because some folks want to mute my handmade coding? Or even to pull me into Germany zone, where still some risk of physical confrontation residues... aaaay!?
Quote:

I believe I see an idiot.
Came for the nice demo, stayed for the moronic comments

I think you mean "impostors". :)
What else can I say - Really nice soundtrack and actual effects. Here's a thumb.
I come out of comment hiatus to agree with break and kb. The Dunning-Krueger is strong here.
effect of Hurvitz-Cramer-Bonk-Banks says that number of pixels drawn in a second is limited. strongly limited. so limited that none of you know how limited it is. or assumes that noone else knows.
quite ok
i want to make such a 'video demo'
Quote:
:Dso limited that none of you know how limited it is.
I think is on to us, we got away with doing animations for 25+ years now... Jokes aside, this is one of my favorite Spaceballs production
Crazy, sexy, cool demo! No code?! Truth - that's a real magic! xD
Very kind!
