Would have been great if there weren't just spinning around in 3d rooms.

just state of the art software stuff!

A cheap attempt at cashing in on the "software rendering" crap. Boring, uninnovative, and downright ugly. Would have been nice back in 1997, but we're wrapping up 2002 right now.

A couple good moments, that's all.

Beautiful.
The come back of software rendering.
Thumbs up, guys, thumbs up.

this (software rendered) demo features cheap rock-like music and mainly consists of cameraflights through nicely textured scifi rooms with some more abstract demo effects in between. no thanks, we had that before (and much better anyway). i guess you could do more interesting stuff with software rendering, and especially in higher resolutions than 320x200 :)

blue colored shad 1.5 ??

too much flybye for my taste, but the music and the graphics are nice.

why use software rendering to play only 3d scenes ?

When I have first seen the screenshot with the close up of thetexel upon that upper tower, I first thought "wow, another pure software demo!" and then "hope it's not so ugly and bad as it looks". It has some visual drawbacks (perhaps this monitor is too big and I got used in higher res things. If it was in highres btw, it would be a pro!) but I enjoyed it and some effects are very nice. It's good for software imho...

Nice engine, shad-ish music and gfx.
Fun for me.

nice oldschool little demo.

i dont see the kind of using software rendering to make a 3ds player as the low resolution slighly decreases the visual quality. it's just an oldschool touch in my eyes.
the music is great.
very good design and gfx.

good question.

1.) Nytrik design rox
2.) Software Demo rox
3.) 320x240 rox
4.) Music sux ;/

But.. I wonder why it runs so slow on AMD athlon 2000+. I mean, I am playing Unreal 1 in 800x600 Softwaremode and approx 70 fps.
rulez added on the 2002-12-15 20:33:29 by elend elend
i like it!
The Music fits to the rest of the production so its okay

Like some of the above, I have to wonder what this demo gains by using software rendering. It seems a perfect candidate for OpenGL or similar.

At any rate, I did like this. It's not super original or anything, but flowed nicely enough for my tastes. And thankfully it doesn't have techno music!
rulez added on the 2002-12-15 21:03:44 by sea_monkey sea_monkey
elend: i think it's because of a framerate limiter :) at least it was exactly as slow on an athlon xp 2000+ as it was on a pentiumIII 550
added on the 2002-12-15 21:53:54 by raymon raymon
looks horrible. mediocre effects. good scenes and some nice graphics wasted.
added on the 2002-12-15 22:02:28 by superplek superplek
didnt care to download another flyby demo
Why did they implement Frame Limiter ??? There's nothing cooler than absolut fluid motion.

Thumb up in 1997, thumb down in 2002.

good flow, good music, ok scenes. i don't really understand the purpose of a software engine that just mimics hardware rendering. a raytracer is different because it can do some things that are impossible in hardware (spheres, refractions, ...). it's probably just that "look-i-can-write-a-rendering-engine-too".

"a raytracer is different because it can do some things that are impossible in hardware (spheres, refractions, ...). "

what kind of bullshit is that ;)

All in all a nice demo, not really new though. But atleast also on my machine fast enough to enjoy it.

i love software-demos, but maybe it's time to juice up the resolution a bit guys. didn't like the style of the music all that much, but atleast it was well done. good textures also, but a boring demo. (changing the fov isn't an effect alone :)
added on the 2002-12-16 03:20:15 by gloom gloom
Quite a big disappointment for me... Perhaps this would've been cool back in 1998 but now it's just not worth it. I liked the music, though.

hehe, seems like i am watching demos in the same order as mp here :)
music: not my taste
sw rendering: 640x480xfsa is just so much nicer. can't even say if it's well coded sw rendering, resolution is too low, no filtering, no aa... (and for that this pc is too fast)
scenes: static, colors galore...

not really bad, but ... :)

"hey, let's make a cool 3d fly-by demo for this sota party!!"
"you gotta be kiddin' man, everyone's bored of 3d fly-bys nowadays, we'll be laughed about.."
"mmm, well then, let's make it all in our patented 'butt-ugly software rendering'! people just luuuv software rendering, 'cause it's sooo oldskool and besides, if it's software, it's just *got* to be 'state of the art' stuff, 'cause no one remembers how to code withoud 3d APIs anyway.."
"hey cool idea dude!! and we can even finally make good use of those scenes and textures for that would-be-killer 3d-demo that we planned to release in 1998!!! that's about time the world sees those in all their glory!.."

Nice demo in its style.
I don't care if it's software/non antialiases and without pixel shaders.
It's like watching a good golden harvest kung fu movie. It's not hollywood and doesn't have millions of budget, but it's more enjoyable.
rulez added on the 2002-12-16 14:06:17 by MooZ MooZ
same as bhead and florent comment. if you want to make software demo, do it on other OS like Linux, GBA or Amiga, it can be more a challenge.
music save it from a thumb down.
Ok, it's software...
but this can't justify the bad colours and flyby design!
added on the 2002-12-16 15:28:54 by pan pan
@superplek: current 3d hardware can only approximate spheres with polys. ok, given enough polys, it doesn't make a difference. but i have yet to see refractions in an accellerated demo.

nice.. I liked almost everthing except the music..

jazzman; that's because the latest gpu's aren't yet widely spread among demo developers.

A demo in the cocoon style. The textures seem ripped from the shad (I and II) demos and NoExit. The music and the design are totally shit ! :(
added on the 2002-12-16 19:40:20 by cykocator cykocator
come on, it's not bad because of that.. it's just that the engine (partly due to the resolution) looks bah =)

as a dutchman i actually think the colors and the scenes are quite funky ;)

I prefer hardware engine usually, but this one, is more than correct, and when the design & atmosphere are present, who cares !

Thumbs up.

A good prod overall... The music is average but the effects & 3d objects are nice. The 3d engine is really nice for a software engine.

a quite decent demo.
nice 3dengine and scenes, horrible music :P
the scenes could have been backed up by a bit more inovative effects.

Hmm... Nice to see we weren't the only ones still doing software stuff in 2002...
Which doesn't change the fact that it's not very pretty, even compared to stuff from '98.. (the fulcrum etc.)
added on the 2004-02-01 04:13:56 by gammawave gammawave
Non-accellerated demos should do something that directx cannot do or is very difficult to do without the freedom of designing your own graphics API. This does not do that. I'm sick of demos that just fly a camera round a room or a spinning object. That was cool when rooms and spinning objects were hard to do, but now it's just boring. If this were 64k, then I would be impressed.

quite good software rendering work here with good models and graphics, but not very interesting effects and the overall music/design really bring it down.
