This is the strangest explanation of a demo I've ever read. You get a thumb for that.
only a still image with sound on macbookpro intel :/
Too bad the Lincolnshire Poacher and the Cherry Ripe stations disappeared just a few months ago! ;)
That number station thing seems like an awesome mystery. I should read more about it at wikipedia.
i'll have to wait for a tiger executable or real video then :(
good work :)
OPTIMUS: IT'S NOT MYSTERY FOR GOD SAKES! IT'S JUST SPY NUMBER STATION, YOU KNOW. god damn. people don't live in series 24, it's much easier for to work as "cab driver" in some non democratic country and being agent and sometimes listen this radio channel and then you have like one time pad and .. yea. anyway
Yeah ok. I have read it's explained. I just say I like it, it looks mysterious, like the numbers in Lost.
Cool stuff, this. Extra props for making a Mac production that's actually a Mac production and not easily portable to other platforms :)
It only shows a still picture and sound on the leopard-mac as well.
it is a macbook pro with ati X1600 256mb gfx card, 2 gigs of mem and intel core 1 duo cpu.
psonice: GeF 6600LE-class GPU here. Shader model 3.0, G4, very poor performance with this demo.
The Cg example I compiled renders more impressive stuff at a smooth framerate on the same config. Cg FTW! ;b

I like this one, this five, this two!
interesting concept for sure, nice realisation aswell, especialy into the audio :)
pretty cool, I like the grainy look but some more sync'ing wouldn't hurt
meh, too unfinished :(
looking forward to the original

I can distinguish The Buzzer (a Russian station, not a proper numbers station one) in the very beginning and then the Lincolnshire Poacher/Cherry Ripe :)) (and the BBC test card, too).
Thumb up for all of that.
Thumb up for all of that.
Well, Linc. Poach. used to broadcast in several frequencies, several times a day. One of these frequencies was indeed 5746, but there were a lot more (see this link for a comprehensive list). Some time around late July, the Lincolnshire Poacher ceased to broadcast. The message format of both LP and Cherry Ripe was identical, and the only difference was the "interval tune" (with the first notes of those folk songs). I guess CR is still broadcasting, but I have not confirmed it yet (and taking into account that it is believed that it emits from Guam, maybe my equipment won't be enough to listen to it). You have the timetable for Cherry Ripe in the same page above. There is a vast world to discover about these kind of signals if you are interested :)
- Oh, I've just noticed that there is a datalink too at the end of the soundtrack... -

mac pr0n.!
just rules
wierd mac pr0n :P
A demo made in Quartz composer and capsuled in a Quicktime file? Only that approach is mad and gets my thumbs up.
The demo itself is pretty nice as well, but has a very low frame rate (MBP with C2D 2.2/GF8600).

Quartz composer... Interesting approach... Although a bit sluggy on my config (MacBook)

even nicer to watch it on my macbook :)
werygood !!

liked it
The tech this is made with is worth a vote up alone, but it's actually a wonderful demo altogether. Especially the analog video look is probably by far the best of its time. I also like the tension brought by the music

It's based on the 'numbers broadcasts', which i'll explain the easy by copy + paste from wikipedia:
"Numbers stations are shortwave radio stations of uncertain origin. They generally broadcast artificially generated voices reading streams of numbers, words, letters (sometimes using a spelling alphabet), tunes or Morse code. They are in a wide variety of languages and the voices are usually women's, though sometimes men's or children's voices are used.
Evidence supports popular assumptions that the broadcasts are used to send messages to spies. This usage has not been publicly acknowledged by any government that may operate a numbers station."
This is a post-party version - the compo version had a nasty bug that screwed up some effects and killed the noise effects, so it just looked glitchy :/
It's in .mov format, but it's realtime - i.e. the .mov file contains the demo and data (a dirty hack possible because I made it with quartz composer). Sorry, xcode wouldn't compile anything on this old g4, I'll do proper binaries in a week or two. No idea how it runs on modern hardware, it's slow but just about watchable on this mac.
The .mov will NOT run on windows because it needs the quartz framework. I'll upload a 'proper' video when I get home.
