well, say what you want about the ripped music, but that's a pretty nice demo, the best from CM yet at least. choreography and 3d quality were improved a bit, the character movements could be more, ahem, original and varied. and I don't really get the story, if there's one. 8)
but still nice work, nice progress. good luck jocker, tiamad & the rest. 8}

Very nice visuals! Really good production!
But I found the camera movements and cuts quite boring after a while.
And I don't like at all the idea of using such a famous song in a demo.

The demo is nice indeed, but of course ripping music DOES matter night_, otherwise we'd all being doing it.
More effects and less 3d scenes would've been cooler though. And also using a better running skeleton :)
No thumbs up.

reminds me a bit at this production from nah-kolor http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=5604. i don´t know why. ripping music suxx, and ripping this monkey music suxx even more ;) For me it looks more like a game preview. the only "demo" thing for me is this 3D-thing that follows the person in this demo. well, it´s ok.

really great graphics work, but the story is nonexistant, the "shadows" are a joke and the animation looks quite ripped (in the "fighting" part)

Furthermore, ripping music sucks. Sorry.

Fuck me dead! I dont care a BIT about ripped music, that was just a visually very beautyfull intro!!! The modelling of the guy is superb and the animation even better. :D At least I have never seen better in a Scene Production.

The animations is great (generated by Poser i guess?, not ripped) and graphics is great + music (which is ofcourse ripped).

The only part i didnt like at ALL, was that part with that 3dobject destroying other objects.

For the record, ripping music is lame!

That said, the gfx, modelling and code are outstanding.

It's a great demo and a real nice change from the all-too-popular minimalist/experimental fad.

While I admit to prefering abstract blobs and stuff, 3D scenes can be cool too. And this is pretty decent stuff.

Regardless of whether or not this music is ripped, it still stinks to my ears. Of course I would've never known it was stolen if it weren't for the above comments. (I'm so out of touch with "pop culture," and this crappy tune just served to remind me why.)

There are so so so many scene musicians, it shouldn't be hard to find one willing to create something for a demo. Or if you want guitars and drums, why not look for a local (non-demoscene) band to record something? There's no excuse to steal.

well, ripped music.

I liked the yellow head-in-the-box, the rest was pretty dull. some nice modelling on the main character, though. code didn't seem to be doing anything special except playing back some 3d-scenes, which isn't really "outstanding code" as was said above. ah well. at least I like the song.
sucks added on the 2002-09-17 22:31:07 by sagacity sagacity
blargh. music-ripping is really lame, please don't continue with such. the "design" is more or less just switching camera-angles, and that's not very exiting in the end. it's all rather pretty though, and since the "story" is a typical demo-story (read: story? what? oh, these recurring elements, yes, some thingie racing after another thingie, design? yes.. or..? eh.. etc.) it's a pretty decent flyby.
added on the 2002-09-17 22:45:14 by gloom gloom
it looks nice. oh yes. cool scenes, nice artwork, good ideas (i like this motionblur thingie or those explosive tentacles) but the music doesn't fit very well. okay, nice synch (i guess it was hard work and you had to listen to the track _very_ often ;) the demo creates a nice and dark mood. but the track sounds more cleaner and pays the listener a good partyfeeling. this is somehow inconsistent... another more sepulchral track (maybe a not ripped one? ;) would create a better atmosphere.

another word to the synchros: it is very nice synchronized, i like those different scenes, but those transitions suck. maybe some blending or fading could create a better atmosphere. nevertheless, a nice demo and compared to other demos released these days it is really great.

just my 2 cent

yeah, this demo rocks, but the music is ripped (is it really so hard to find a freetime-crossover-band in your neighborhood?) and
the guy runs like jester (the harlekin) in the Nvidia-SDK mesh-skinning demos ; )

Very good graphics, nicely rendered, to sum up very good demo, to show to (standard :) people.
The "story" of the demo is not of the level of the other stuff, I'm sure it was under finition, damned party deadlines !
Ripping commercial music is bad, boo !

Thumb up for the nice design, excellent models/textures (usual for Critical Mass), nice 'worn film' effect and fantastic movement.

Thumb down for badly recycling scenes from their previous demo and for using a highly popular commercial track.

If they had ripped some similar track from a band that noone has heard of this would be a definite hit.

Great graphics and synchro for this heavily VIP2 influenced production. The 'story' is a bit flakey tho...

Deserves a thumbs up, even if it's only for the amount of work and care that has been put in.

About the music, I dont give a shit if it's ripped, if u make a bad demo with ripped music i sort of see the point, but VIP2 and State of Mind are great productions despite having ripped music (although this demo is good, it's not up to that par). Please get over your stupid prejudices and look at the work that has gone into this prod, which is indeed a lot.

'nuff preaching for today

The nfo say : "critical mass presents in association with guano apes.."

So I wonder if the music is used with permission from Guano apes, if thats the case, the use of the music is just fine.

Using ripped music get automatically a thumb down from no matter how good the demo itself is. Too bad.

Have anyone of you actually ever considered *asking* for a permission to use a soundtrack for a demo? It's actually not that hard as it sounds.. there are many bands out there that might want to co-operate after seeing how cool stuff you can make with realtime computergenerated graphics.

1.: I don't care if it uses commercial music. I've never been a fan of Guano Apes, but the music and the visuals just go nicely together. In my opinion, demo-effects should compliment the music and vice versa. It doesn't really matter, if the song is original or not.

2.: Scenes and textures are awesome! Great Job! I especially liked the metallic head in the box (last -but-one scene). Ok, the "running-scene" looked kind' a weird, but its probably the fault of the chosen camera perspective. Its just a minor quibble.

3.: The whole thing rocks! One of the best prods this year. On a sidenote: the well known tune and the professional graphics make it possible to show this demo to "Non-Demofreaks" and arouse some interest for the demoscene. Think about that ;-).

PS: Has anybody else noticed the great quality-improvement of russian demos in the last two or three years?

I'll not comment on the ripping music stuff or include it in my rating anymore; I think it's been said often enough by now :)

So let's look at what's left: The graphics are rather nice and the code is solid, but the problem I have with this production is that it simply doesn't work as a demo (for me).

I appreciate the work, but what I see when I just watch the demo without concentrating on individual aspects is nothing special, so, pigface.

Good choice of music, but why rip when Fuel showed us with Untamed that a scener can easily do his own metal song?

The syncs are quite senseless, as is the story, and there is no real connection between the music (either the siong or just the lyircs) and the visuals.

Tries to be Sinum but fails.

Well... More than a demo comment it seems an ethic discussion about the use and abuse of ripped music...

Let me tell you something... I´m not a scener, but I want to become one of them. In my oppinion, a demo is something that you do because you want to do it. As it is yours, no one pays you to do it, you are free to do it the way you want. Critical Mass (masa crítica, me gusta ese nombre) just did it the way they wanted to do it. Maybe someday I´ll be a scener, but nowadays I'm a gamer and a CAD worker... I love fractals, bobs and all these complex examples of coding... But I think that a (gamestyle) 3D demo is something fresh in the scene... or didn´t you liked playing Max Payne, or further away, who didn't enjoyed with the Matrix scene of 3DMark? It´s true that there´s no much code working, but graphics are very impressive, camera movements are great, scene direction rules.... and I like Fear Factory, and haven´t heard that song!! Yeah, maybe ripping is not the way, but I have to say that the result is amazing.

The truth is that I have enjoyed insanely with this demo. And also like VIP2. Yeah, well done! Please make another one!!!

Hit ceiling with thumbs!!!

'Nuff whining like little bitches! Watching it with the sound off, some nice scene design and construction, character animation (although a bit remeniscent of the walking scene in 3DMark), creative use of mis-en-scene effects... so it still gets a thumbs-up.

Now I've voted, turning the sound back up, nice sync and atmosphere befitting the choice of track. What's more its another demo that's introduced me to something I didn't know.

You don't shout at Chris Cunningham because he didn't write "Come to Daddy". It's a creative response to a piece of art, and .'. valid - just a horse of a different stable. When people pass people's work off as their own then it's exploitative and it sucks, but if you really can't see the difference between that and this then, well, bof :)
rulez added on the 2002-09-19 13:54:11 by MrMessiah MrMessiah
MrMessiah: Cunningham's videos are a totally different thing.

It all boils down to one word: PERMISSION.

When you're ripping music, you're not being too unfair to scene musicians. If you as a coder/designer have a vision of a demo fitting to a Guano Apes track, and you don't know any scene musician who can come close to that style (and I think we all agree that there are VERY FEW (at best) scene musicians who can do non-electronica and most of those then lack the proper mixing/mastering skills to make their songs sound like more than a bad suburban garage grunge band), then so be it...

... but who you're then really ripping of are in this case the Guano Apes. Heck, maybe they'd even have liked the demo, maybe a miracle would have happened and the label/publisher would have given permission to use such a "hit" track for free...

... but that didn't happen. The band wasn't given a chance to know how THEIR (!) piece of art got used, let alone control it.

Sorry, but MP3 trading sucks and rips off people. Why is it suddenly ok if you wrap a demo around it?

(As a side note, I kind of hate the music industry and their recent efforts to make artists as well as consumers pay more and more for less and less music and rights, but I at least haven't lost the insight that spreading commercial mp3's throughout the net isn't allowed and definitely shouldn't be in the future)
added on the 2002-09-19 15:11:21 by kb_ kb_
and again, sharing mp3s (or whatever copyrighted material) with your close friends and relatives is perfectly legal and should remain so.

i remember a video demo from mekka 2002 by farb-rausch that had a ripped song from Future Crew, so I cannot understand your lame thumbs down just "ripped" music... you are playing on 2 sides of your own grave suckers...

I'm ok with cp, it's really unfair for the competition.
Party organizers should really put this in the rules of the competitions. It would make those demos disqualified. But anyway the demo could be released out of a party or as disqualified.

kb, truely capitalistic approach ;)
i say go ahead and rip off big record companies, they are earning way too much anyway and so does guano apes.. i'd say its not about permission, fuck copyrights - its more about creating your very own prod.. scene 2 scene, galaxy 2 galaxy

"sharing mp3s (or whatever copyrighted material) with your close friends and relatives is perfectly legal and should remain so." - excuse me? where do you live? merry bubbly fantasyland? please define "close friends and relatives" and how they could -possibly- relate to the use of the music -you've- purchased (if you've even paid for it in the first place..). i'm a musician and try to make money on it when i'm not doing demo-tracks, and piracy is a fucking cash-killer for me. people can yell "fuck copyrights - share everything - information wants to be free" and all that crap until their lungs run out of air, but the fact remains; where will the artists get their paycheck from if nobody pays for stuff any more? and; is it any less unethical to think that "well, -someone- must have paid for this cd since i'm able to copy it off the net" than to just steal a copy from the shop?

sorry for the rant.. no.. wait.. i'm not sorry. piracy sucks. ripped music in demos sucks... and fuckall to the ones who doesn't understand.

why cant i share my PROPERTY i paid for with friends or whomever i want? cant i give my car for friend to drive? again, just in search for more $, music and software industry seem to try to set new rules on everything... fuck it and you'll get a lesson when some major record label will screw you up. that system stinks and you should know that!

Raver: You are totaly ignorant aren't you? I have very much understanding for what Gloom sais here. I myself am a musician. For musicians that are not big labeled we strive to make any money from our music. And it is fucking almost impossible becouse to many people just copy the music instead of paying it.

And for the "lend by car" analogy. It is not the same thing. You don't actualy buy the media. You buy a license to listen to the music. If you lend away the CD to somebody you need to "lend away the license" if you get my point. Is is basicly like software. Just silier.

I am not going to rant on abot this or anything. But I think it is important that people understand that piracy, although it does not hurt the big label musicians to much, it really hurts a lot of musicians that strive for years working several part time jobs trying to make a living. Many mucicians that love making music just don't have anything left after a while to keep going and making good music when he has to work his days away and on and on and on.

You are probably an inteligent lot. You get the point. :)

Nuff said from "I" me thinks..

Jesus Reebok, get a life. There's commerical music and there's scene music, where people participating actually KNOW it's origin. In fact, don't get a life. You're much too clueless to find one.

Watched the demo, found it to be an uneventful piece of disappointment. Nice modelling, I guess there's a decent engine behind it, but the audio was well...guano. Uneventful trife with a tired track.

Eaver should search google for the Salon article of Courtney Love about Bands and record companies, as he seems to have ZERO FUCKING KNOWLEDGE of how such things work.

if you are musician, you get paid by record company, doesnt matter if some copies are being pirated.. <- IGNORANT LOSER TALK.

now, prove what you're saying or maybe you are not getting my point at all. and after all, maybe losers are these who're losing zillionz because of piracy?

gloom: in Norway, where both you and I live, copying copyrighted stuff to your friends and family are concidered "personal use", and is legal. But those you give copies to are not allowed to give it further away.
added on the 2002-09-20 12:22:22 by kusma kusma
raver, you're totally beside the point. when you bought a car, it's perfectly acceptable to lend it to your friends. the same thing goes for music, and no one will stop you from doing it, as long as you don't keep a copy for yourself. in germany, you may make backups of software or cds you bought, and you may give it to your relatives and close friends in any case, but giving it to someone else when you still have a copy is a violation of copyright law and rightly so, IMHO.

Who cares if they pay the authors / gets a written persmission to use the music, it's still ripped, and ripping art sux. lets keep the scene a scene and not "hey i havnt got any 3d, lets use the quake1 level1 modell"
Altho i like the rest of the demo, but ripping just sux :)

Besides the fact that this uses ripped music (which is illegal if you do not have permission from the original artist, no matter what anyone says, and, critical mass could be in serious trouble over this), this demo just plain sux imo.
The animation on the guy looks VERY familiar, and well, just looks suspicously like a 3d player to me.
Those explosions are amusing aswell ;P

I did enjoyed it, because I knew the song and made it a surprise. It's the first time I run a demo with a commercial song I have heard and liked before and trying to see how they managed to connect the known music with the design. But is it perhaps one of the main reasons why I thumb it up?

Ripping is still questionable. Someone said that if there is a known commercial song in a demo participating in a compo, then it may possible win a lot of points just because of that! And yes, it made my mood more positive and surprising when I suddenly discovered I was hearing Open your Eyes/Guano Apes in a demo connected with the design, that would made me wow, something that wouldn't happen so strong if there was another scener music used in it. However from another point of view, it is interesting how sceners tried to put another commercial song (And the first I knew it before watching this demo) into the design of a demo..

It is interesting, but questionable still...

Poor poor sceners, trying to get something original from their minds and so releasing once per year.
I really really hate finding myself out of spare time to implement new effects, or seeing someone else using the same ideas as me in a demo (before me of course).
Figure out how much I like looking at such prods and thinking: "f**k, napster/winmx/morpheus really helps doing demos! gotta get a copy of it!"
And... it's that easy to make a (could be) GOOD prod get that load of thumbs down. That's a shame.
sucks added on the 2002-09-22 14:13:16 by rIO rIO
quality of an actual video game, nothing more, no art in this
textures are good, especially this fenwick, moves of the man are good but his face dont have facial expressions, the result is a cold product without emotions
scenes are too much looping, too repetitive and without story or interest
i dont know the music, so it's not a problem for me, except this music is very basic commercial teenager rock for little girls
Hmhm. Just like others mentioned before, this demo doesn't really trigger any emotions for me.

And even if it already was said 10000 times: Ripping music sucks for several reasons.

IMHO one of the nice things about demos is that all sections of the scene (music, gfx, code,...) have to work together to create one. If commercial music is used, this is at least unfair competition against the musician-part of the scene.

IMHO this should have been disqualified. As it wasn't, it deverses a thumb down.

On a side note:
Rebook: Posting "farb-rausch can learn something here" to every comment thread on pouet.net without any context just makes it even more obvious what kind of stupid twit you are. May I remind you that you don't have any skills whatsoever? Before you keep calling active members of the scene 'lamers', how about moving your ass to some demoparty and maybe release something you've done yourself? Oh well, then again it's maybe easier to accept the fact that you are boring and old, and all you have is the names of once-glory-but-long-dead scenegroups you abuse...

I'm somewhat against ripping music, but OTOH I love VIP2, State of mind and En haluaisi olla. :-P The music fits the prod IMO and overall the demo is entertaining and looks professional. Ok, so it is lacking effects and is mostly 3d models, but it's a good show.

i think they just liked the song, and it inspired them to "wrap a demo around it" as someone said.... i see nothing wrong with that. preaching about piracy is pathetic - i wonder how many of us have actually bought visual studio, photoshop, or various sequencers (or windows for that matter).

someone said "quality of an actual video game" - and that's the point. at least we have something that's not embarassing to show to our gamemaking collegues. im also sick of this "ART" debate, if you like it good, if you dont, so be it, but why fabricate theories about it being art or not.....

these are just my opinions.

hmhmm i'm really amazed i never commented this. this one has everything i'm supposed to hate:

- boring colours
- ripped music (though properly credited)
- storyboard demo without a storyboard
- 3d flyby-stylee

still, it's one of my all time favourites. BIG ups for the sync, the atmosphere and the modelling. oh and for choosing the ideal cheap solution for the guy's face which fits every non-happy mood. music might be ripped, this demo however simply adds to it. (unlike, imo, vip2 or such, which are very nice and work with the music, but don't add to the song as a standalone audio track). i think this is one of the best demos ever.

and 2d patterns showing character's inner disorder. Character studio animations (?)
just looked like "we have that feature" and didn't do a good part for me.

I dislike demos with ripped music, but since most (almost all) scener musicians are techno-beat-it-like-mad or similar styled (with some exceptions, like aMusic and Leviathan by ASD), what can someone who likes rock styled music do when he wants to make a such demo and all those bum-tsaf-bum-tsaf-bum-tsaf musics doesn't mean anything to him?

As for this demo. I liked the music (i never heard it before, btw) and i can see that there was a lot of work in the engine (note that it ran smoothly even on an old P2@333Mhz/128MB RAM with GeForce2ti/32MB i had when i firstly saw it). The textures and the models are also incredible (for a demo)!

The shadows are a bit... hard, but not a "joke" as been said. However they seem a bit out of place :-). And it has very good camera movement.

But i will agree that it has a gameish character. I think that the engine is more a game engine than a demo engine. But i didn't disliked it (i'm fed up with all those abstract, random demos...).

Lastly the runnning animation sucks.
