For some reason (I don't know why) opening link from this site sometimes fails. Try to open it by copy+paste link into browser address bar.

I especially like the flying grenades with their small wings!
Flower's rising is nice!

won't open for me even w/ copy+paste =\
any mirror link ?

Hmm... Flying grenades - great idea! Funny rockets and happy machine guns, accompanied by jumping tanks and battle penguins - what a great scene :) Definitely, I'll do it next time :)

xiaomega:
There is no mirror link. Sometimes it opens a page, asking to follow the link, specified on that page - just click it. Of course, that sucks. If you have any suggestions on where to place this file, I'll be very obliged to you.

changed link. ;)

a bit ugly but somehow I like it. Second part (the flowers rising) doesn't really fit but looks nice anyway.

+ dotted flower bloom
+ sharing source
+ size (4kb)
o music
- quality of generated landscape (even for 4kb)

overall a good non-party release demo. Keep up your work and looking forward to see more releases!!!

For 4k, this is really cool! The big fat birds need a diet, though :)

thank you StingRay for uplaoding it ^^.

stan_1901: you're welcome.

By design this isn't really good. The camera movement and the music is horrible. More quality for the landscape would be a good thing.
But since this reminds me of Kartoonikum in a strange way so this has to rule! :D

the flowers are beautiful, the flying grenades with their unnatural movement not. -> piggy.

I'll give it a weak thumb up.

Additionally to what the others said you might reconsider your choices of colors. That extremely saturated green (is it 0x00ff00?) hurts my eyes.

Not so often 4K is released with source. There is also source code for Mesha 4K intro available, fast compare and there is obvious that most of 4K intros for Windows are pretty faked shit which has nothing to hard size optimizing and real coding craft.

Just rewatched it here at home and suddenly my monitor turned off. First I thought "ah, f*ckz0ring windoze crashed again" but after reboot I got some weird "you don't have your power cable connected to your radeon 9800 graphics adapter" error. WTF? after a quick check it turned out my power connector was burnt(!). So apparently your 4k is extremely hot :P And thus it deserves a thumb. :)

That much be the most clueless shit I've heard. Could you please once make a 4k so that I can see the real coding craft you're so eagerly talking about?
added on the 2008-02-14 07:57:17 by waffle waffle
and what the hell is the definition for "faked shit" anyway in your terms. "Doesn't contain enough Sierpinski"?

Yeah, I can nothing but agree. Even more strange is that he thumbed up "pretty faked shit".

Props for the source though. Its a interesting read :)

Next time you might want to consider bigger (and tileable) textures than 16x16 and concentrate a bit more on the design side :)

StingRay

I had on mind "many", I wrote "most". My bad. However, the truth is brutal: 4KB intros are about making something amazing in small size, and 4KBs like Terrari have nothing to real size optimizing, and are unimpressive. It's not my personal point of view. It's a fact.

I can safely say that small intros for Windows are pretty fake, while they use code from dlls, their small size is made by powerful packers, and OS dependency is big. And what we have? - Windows prods which often don't work under Windows (maybe there should be platform "Windows XP with d3dx9_xx.dll collection on powerful hardware" defined), often unclean, farts from speakers, big hardware requirements. The right platform for doing something extremely hard is DOS, and 4KB for DOS != 4KB for Windows. The same effects done with real craft were smaller, better, run great on slow computers. See Mesha, look into its source. See Addicted to Code. See Juggler 2001. See Another soul lost. See productions of Digimind. y0bi. Mentor. Comparing to Mesha for example, prods like Terrari, which we have many of them lately, are just totally poor. "For 4k, this is really cool!". "very good for 4kb". "Good for 4k!". "Real Freakin Awesome!". Earth is a plane! I'm dubious if it's even average for 4KB.

I'm not an opponent of small productions for Windows. I like and appreciate them. They are reasonable (as all categories on demoscene), just should be done really good to have "Real Freakin Awesome!" status. You know Minas productions? They are great. Terrari (and many other) is not.
added on the 2008-02-17 20:35:44 by Pirx Pirx
Also mesha used an exepacker (custom).
Anyway true, with DOS you start nearly from 0.
added on the 2008-02-17 21:02:44 by bdk bdk
Pirx: What is the difference except the changed limitations? Shouldn't the goal be achieving something cool with given limitations then and not complain about how a platforms differs from other? Is 500MHz cooler than 1GHz? Does the amount of available colors affect the awesomeness?

Why don't you list some below average DOS intros too then? Why don't you compare good DOS intros to good Windows intros? The marginal of good productions is the same in my opinion.

...and why do you thumb up every non-ripped intro even if you think it's crap?
added on the 2008-02-17 21:21:45 by waffle waffle
waffle

As I said, 4KB for DOS is very different category that 4KB for Windows, we can say that comparing gives incompatible types error. Why have I decided to cmp attempt anyway? To explain why I used word "faked". Languid 4KB intro achieved by about 256 OpenGL instructions will never be as impressive as the one achieved by thousands of Asm commands deployed in perfectly well-thought-out and optimized algorithms. I realize now is 2008 (sometimes I have problems with day or month...), and 500MHz isn't better than 1GHz, but intro which works nice on 500MHz is simply better than the same which needs at last 1GHz to run. We are talking about hard optimizing introscene, technical aspects are as much (or sometimes even more) important as pure artistic facet. For example, 64K Keops intros are very polished and work well on older hardware, this fact gives them many points.
And it's obvious that in each category there are good and bad prods - why I listed good ones? Because you asked what is real coding craft in my eyes. Also to cool down reactions of some people who think here is a piece of awesome freakin' hardcore optimized intro, and maybe don't know what a really great 4KB should be.

Seems that my demo (really bad demo, in my opinion) became a "Holy-war" initiator. Well, that means it's life had some meaning :)

doesnt really convince me -> piggy

pirx: i dont quite get your point. i personally wouldnt care if a 4k (or any other prod) contains the most optimized and coolest asm code i've ever seen. if it looks and sounds like shit, it is shit. on the other hand simple code (and even non asm-code) can somtimes produce amazing results while using dlls and platforms that are considered standard nowadays. in my eyes its just a shift in focus (just like in 64ks and demos) in favour of design and concept/idea instead of technical aspects. and basically thats what seperates the men from the boys today. there were/are/will always be a majority of mediocre and bad prods vs. a small amout of really good/outstanding ones. so basically nothing new here.

Was ok.

I agree that 4k intros are more artsy these days, but this is actually causing some people not to release their stuff because of the demand for music and good design in addition to solid effects. The 4k compo should be for coders.

What a bunch of nonsense. Somehow I'm pretty sure DOS intros are compressed too, and use BIOS/DOS interrupts whenever it's possible, and if they display text they use one of the awful ROM fonts. They're pretty OS dependent too, and if they support sound it's exactly one soundcard, preferably hardwired to exactly one port, because there's no space for proper sound support. A truly great platform it is, DOS.

Sure you get your rasterizer and a lot of other things almost for free when you're making Windows 4ks. That doesn't make Windows 4ks "worse", it just raises the bar for them, and I think some people have made really impressive shit for windows.

Quote:

Yes, but the compression is only supplement there, not a major way to achieve the proper size. Addicted to Code is 5.3KB without compression, and it's fucking hard to compress it below 4KB.

Quote:

MESHA.ASM has over 2300 lines and 2 int calls.

Quote:

Yes, ultimate 3D fonts in Mesha are ugly, only Windows provides fantastic ones.

Quote:

I heard that zerobytes by Optimus is OS independent.

Quote:

DOS... The best smallest PC intros don't have sound.

Quote:

Definitely the best for extremely size-optimized intros.
