Brilliant VIC exploration by Crossbow!

Works only on the real thing (or in the emu if you know to remove the vic-check ;-)
rulez added on the 2007-05-13 22:57:58 by scoutski scoutski
Hehe, could see the first part after removing the VIC check but then it crashed so there are probably some more checks. :) Thumbs up for entertaining me. =)

50 pixels x-stretched sprites, 9 sprites in a row. Crossbow, are you sure that you are a human being just like us? :) That's totally insane!!! No need to talk about FLI, koala mover with 3 column bug fix. 3 world records/inventions in one screen. I'm about to change my religion :)

Video? :)

Yeah, I'd really like a video too, my x-cable is busted ;)

Yeah! Now this is the real demoscene spirit, exploring the hardware to do the impossible!

yeah, let's see it :)
Added the emulator fixed version by Ian Coog I found on CSDB. =) Totally cool demo, brilliant code and nice musics as well.
added on the 2007-05-14 17:06:24 by StingRay StingRay
Please remove the emu-"fixed" version, as no emulator can display the effects properly anyway. Add a link to a fixed emulator instead. :-P
added on the 2007-05-14 21:57:50 by Radiant Radiant
Not even a fixed emulator could display the second part :P
added on the 2007-05-14 22:48:21 by tomaes tomaes
yes, remove links to all demos that arent 100% correctly displayed in emulator
added on the 2007-05-15 08:23:10 by hollowman hollowman
I give this a thumb up based on the descriptions.

Where is the point in cracking the emu protection when the demo doesnt work on an emulator anyways? The right way is to improve the emulator so the emu detection does not work anymore.
rulez added on the 2007-05-15 08:31:12 by Stelthzje Stelthzje
hollowman: The proper file was already there. I don't see the need for adding a "fixed" file which still doesn't work, but maybe I'm missing something...
added on the 2007-05-15 09:54:29 by Radiant Radiant
or become useless because the emulator actually emulate properly the VIC.

side node: Aaah the joy of Atari emulators. So robust and close to the real hardware they even support synch scrollers, fullscreen, 1nop color changes, ...

radiantx, yes, obviously you do
added on the 2007-05-15 10:04:36 by hollowman hollowman
hollowman: Mind telling me what instead of dropping sarcastic remarks? I thought not even Hoxs64 could display the fx in this demo.
added on the 2007-05-15 10:11:55 by Radiant Radiant
Inventing new hardware tricks on 25 year old hardware => massive ownage!
rulez added on the 2007-05-15 15:59:37 by cruzer cruzer
"not even Hoxs64"? Now I must be missing something ;)
added on the 2007-05-15 22:54:01 by Skate Skate
radiantx, vice only showed 48 pixles in upper border and didnt show the 9th sprite correctly but everything else worked just fine,so why shouldnt people be allowed to see the demo in that way if they wish? do you want to remove all demos that dont sound 100% correct in emulator aswell? and if you want to complain about sarcasm you might consider pulling in your tongue first..

anyway, latest version of hoxs64 passes the emulation test, shows 50 pixels sprites and the 9th sprite correctly.
added on the 2007-05-16 08:44:45 by hollowman hollowman
Hollowman: No, I just didn't see why an emulator "fix" would be needed when the effects didn't look right using it. Clearly I was wrong about no emulator being able to display the new VIC tricks, or at least I am now (with the latest version of Hoxs64 released today). The thing I questioned was just that: labeling something as an emulator fixed version, while the fx are still not working in an emulator. If it had been called a "VIC detection skipped version" or whatever I wouldn't have cared. But now it doesn't matter anymore.

technically impressive
rulez added on the 2007-05-16 10:43:50 by RA RA
I'll trust the c64'ers on the 9 50px wide sprites breakthrough. At least the multicolor + fli image scrolling is slick, even to my unexperienced eyes.
rulez added on the 2007-05-16 11:12:45 by p01 p01
I can finally watch it with that new emulator I wasn't aware about. And even if it's not a demo of my taste (maybe with few more parts?), I can't but just thumb up the effort. Inventing new hardware tricks in such an old platform is simply crazy!!!

There. Changed it. Quit whining. :)

And the thumb is for that really neat zelda map part.

BB Image

please have a closer look (the pic was taken from a emulator btw)... tbh i can't see what that special is about the crest logo... and 48 pixel sprites...
the upper pic is a modified version of the intro... i shifted the logo a bit down into the scroller and changed $d01d to a different value...
($d01d sprite stretch x)... the c is not stretched the r is streched.. as you can see the r has doubled pixels... so what is that special ? i mean x stretch is supported by the vic by default...
maybe someone can enlight me why it's that special ... don't hit me i'm no c64 expert ;))

ultra: could it be because it actually shows 50 pixels per sprite on a real machine? :)

Oh, and forgot the thumbage
rulez added on the 2007-05-16 13:03:28 by britelite britelite
ah ok ic... then i missunderstood the efx... i thought it was a 50 pixel unstretched sprite... ;)
added on the 2007-05-16 13:07:55 by ultra ultra
The original version (with VIC detection) works perfectly on the newest version of Hoxs64. So how about removing that no-video-chip-detection version?
added on the 2007-05-16 13:59:52 by cruzer cruzer
Removed. :)
added on the 2007-05-16 14:06:23 by StingRay StingRay
Oh, and I agree with Hollowman btw, exactly for the reasons he mentioned I have added the link to the version that could be watched on emulators.

Thumb up for being able to invent new low level hardware trickery 25 years after the C64 was released :)

Video? look the screenshot....the picture is swinging after a while, thats all u see here. if s.o. who has no idea what the coder is talking about in the scroller, he could call this lame and boring! lol

Works with newest WinVICE 1.22 like it supposed to be! Vic-check is removed in newest WinVICE, so hoxs got owned!
added on the 2007-10-06 11:16:47 by TOMPCpl TOMPCpl
TOMPCpl, WinVICE can't display 50-pixel wide sprites properly (it shows only 48 pixels in width) contrary to Hoxs64. So you're talking bollocks essentially.
