very well done from a technical perspective. it doesn't really appeal to me emotionally though, dunno... I wasn't very convinced by the acting, and the suicide scene seemed a bit over the top. still, a very good effort altogether.
Some spiffy post-production, a handful of tired clichés and a goth.
Where have we seen this before?
Where have we seen this before?
Technique is not enough.
Some hollywood productions are technically smashing your mind but with absolutely no ambiance or scenario.
It's the same. It didn't make it during the show.
Too bad because it smells huge technically.

there was a point in this video, where if it would've ended, this would've been really good. but, it did continue after that, so no thumb up. also, it looks to me that the quality of the camera work/post production isnt as good as in the couple of previous years..

I disagree. Just do a direct comparison. I didn't remove all color because i can't deal with it this time (that's a pain in the ass).
I think its better postproduction to guarantee coherent color then just pulling a sepia-toning over all the stuff.
In my previous releases it was simply obvious where the work went, this time it went everywhere else too.

well, might be that i was drunk at the time also.
I enjoyed this one.. not sure about the use of the gun tho.. maybe a less material and more mental way of dealing with issues would hav been betta.. but anyway bla-bla - I dig it :)
Seriously, didn't we already see this last year? And the year before that? And it's still not my thing.
Another masterpiece of JCO&Faith. I really like it, though I must agree, that the suicide scene was way over the top.
But the whole atmosphere just totally rules.

I think that there are big differences between these videos and I want too adress people, who are thinking about life like me.
So when it's not your thing, close your eyes or go away, when you see "a video like this" in the next compo, because you are not my audience.

Weak release. Seen sooooo much better stuff from them. Looks to me it's a rushed thingy
hm nop...
older prods were 10x better
older prods were 10x better
Nice editing/post-production, but that's pretty much all there is.
nah. but the girl is cute - piggy :)
<quote>Looks to me it's a rushed thingy</quote>
It's definitely not rushed - but I had too many problems with this production. Most of them because of blender3d (crappy piece of unfinished software - but it's free, and the renderers are okay). The 3d stuff required impossible acts of faking and re-faking, and i'm not at all satisfied with it (anybody seen ice age 2?).
And yeah, I begin to get the point.
The demoscene wants obvious effects-work and shits on stuff like scenery, emotion, symbols, technical professionalism and storytelling. I just learned and improved the wrong skills for this production.
In the consequence, I think I have to allow overexposure, messed up colors and all other kinds of inperfection back in, spare myself a few weeks work and give you some in-your-face sync effects again instead of trying to create something bigger and deeper...

Don't be bothered by all the jealous guys here that can't see where the work *IS*. Keep on doing such quality prod, for us to copy them next year ;-) You are the best !
And we want to see Faith next time also !

i like it. very deep and emotional.

Keep away this bullshit and go your way... ;)
'thinking about life' is one thing, expressing your thoughts through pretentious kitsch is another. each sequence is so completely overstaged, theatrically imposed and dramatized down to the obvious phoney, killing all subtlety of the idea, while recycling each and every cliché motif there is (gun, hourglass, door). teenage scene poetry as moving image ...
annual doctors diagnosis: strong technical realization, some utterly beautiful pictures, excellent type design -- but weak and immature concept, sorry :(

the synch of the 'going crazy over those boxes' sequence was cool, though :)
What monroe says is the very true reason why I wanted to make the pseudo.concept thing.
Thanks for putting it in better words than mine.

"better words" (doh_drd)? Sorry but I think that's offending, I think your critic isn't useful (monroe).I thought pseudo.concept had a different reason..I'm very disappointed so hear that.
Sorry JCO, but what did you expect? I guess no-one can really blame the scene for beeing effect oriented as that is what the scene was and still is all about.
And beeing subtle with post production and adding lots of love into little almost not noticable things may make your work a classic, but certainly not a party smasher.
So get over it. It IS an excellent release imo. You just missed the target audience. Happens.

i found out with "out back into" that sceners don't understand subtle metaphors (thinking of the cave in the last part). thus, memorize your future was really "simple", and with this prod i found a compromise of both.
I can talk over an hour about possible interpretations (already did so), it's really not that simple, but it offers these "klischees" so that all those "dumb" sceners might be able to understand a little more.
if i had done it more david lynch style, i'm somehow pretty sure everybody had begun whining about how "it doesn't make sense" and "it lacks a message" or "being completely confusing and pointless".
delax: i did not expect to do a party smasher, and i'm well aware of the project's weaknesses. i just don't like all those fucking morons on pouet posting their inconstructive unreflected crap, and forcing me to wonder "is it true what they say?"
i know it's nothing new, and it's the nature of pouet, and i'm just these days too weak to ignore it, so i senselessly fight back.
"Fuckings to the scene."

quite enjoyable one.. not as kickass as last year's production tho.. aaand next time more attention to the showerscene please!! (wouldve made you win!) :PP
hallo!
honestly, my pov is:
i liked other productions from jco more. but there is a point, there IS a story, is GET the point, i follow the story - and - i liked it!
jco, faith: not all ppl in the world have open eyes. i mean like: OPEN eyes.
my 2 schinken.

Faith: Beside all the respect I have to you and JCO, the original reason is that I was sorry to see as talented people as you both are doing such cheap symbolic stories.
I dislike symbolism where obvious things are revealed using powerfull means. Thus we went deeper in it telling the masses they should eat and get fat.
Even the name pseudo.concept deals with the content, not the cover.
The only intent is a desperate prayer to you to put a bit of deepness in your art. As we respect you we tried to do the anim fine but that changes nothing to the context where it comes from.

oh my god!sorry, but I think there is a lot deepness in the videos and a lot of people cannot understand it. I would like to see, if you can show deepness in your OWN works. After that, we can talk about it again. (and I still like your product)
faith & jco: i know my comment was rather harsh. but i assure you, it was downright honest and clinical. i respect all the effort and work that went into this and other productions and i actually hate to thumb down anything that is as ambitious and well produced as this. but you're trying so damn hard to hammer your message into people's heads that it hurts ... it has nothing to do with ppl demanding effects or not understanding its deepness. these videos, their visual symbols and metaphors are so obvious and worn-out that all deepness gets lost underway in order to get the point across ("go your own way!! go go!").
Once again I second that. Let's say what is missing is not deepness, but subtlety.
I like it very much, even if I enjoyed your previous works more. Still, there is more symbolism in here and I like the final message. It's touching..
And well, opinions are opinions. Why do some creators argue about negative comments in the scene? And what is considered pretendious anyways?
Naive, but I like your need to find the truth of life & reality. So thumbs up for that! for more truth of everything: www.treeincarnation.com & www.coralcastlecode.com

Hey guys ! we are demomakers, no philosophers !
The scene history shows us that from the beginning, the "fun" and technical aspect of a prod has always counted more than the "message" that it wanted to transfer : come back to your old scene "coups de coeur" and you'll see !
If a prod is able to make laugh, that's cool.
If a prod is technically amazing, that's even better.
However, If a prod is a crap, that sucks.
Why are in this thread, many guys only focusing on the fact that "this demo deals with cheap symbolic" ? Personnaly I don't care about that. This demo *IS* the best "non professional" video piece I've ever seen, when you know all the work that is under (I know what I'm talking about - yes, I've been talking for a long time with Jco and Faith at the Party).
Look : Jco and Faith will be able to proudly show their video for a long time, even to pros. Many other "wilder" won't be able to show there prod in a couple of year because it will suck. This include ours ;-( in which, that's right, we wanted to make people laugh (memorize your dinner by pseudo-concept)
That's why I encourage Jco and Faith to continue there work. This one should have won if there hasn't been plenty of "funny" prods in the compo.
They are the best with "student affordable" time, hardware and software (Surprise by Aenima is a pro work, that should never have been presented in a Party).

Emo.. sorry, it's not my style.
I liked the idea but I thought it was presented in an overdramatized way. still, you can see there's hours of work behind it, so no thumb-down.

what doh said last.
thumbs up for making a (good) point.

failed to keep the level imho :(
I preferred last years, but this has a beach (:
Faith/JCO: you've got an advantage you may not realize now - since folks EXPECT something from you now, you can having fun manipulating that - doing what they expect or not doing what they expect for effect.
That's powerfully fun stuff right there, and an advantage the professionals like dani don't have (:
Can't wait to see how you use this new tool (seen before) (:

Hmm technically good, but story is naive and acting is poor.
I laugh my ass off, when I saw Faith at beach shouting and kicking to trash.
It reminds me "Punish your litterbins".

i think people are being a bit too touchy here. (both the authors and the critics.)
noone doubted the technicality or the message - it's just that the delivery itself isn't really subtle and the metaphors are far too obvious and cliched to really make me think "DAMN thats a nice way of interpreting something". there's no point in pouting over a critic either - that wont change anything.
on the other hand, the video still has its merits in technicality (very few liveaction imagery in wilds nowadays, especially done this well), and it does use a type of symbolism that's rarely done. I disagree that the video was regurgitating things from previous years; people at bp complained about seeing the same persons in the video over and over - well DUH, that's like complaining about seeing the same names in a credits listing in a demo. if an artist/group has a style, so be it. that's the whole point of design et al.
i dont see this as a bad prod. it's just that it could've been done a lot better - but that would've been a much different prod.

lots of good things to say about this one. I really like the look of the black clothes against the bright beach at the point where Faith is crouching some 20 meters from the camera :)... how about some blue tint for that frozen feeling too? (maybe like in the frozen video by madonna even). I wish you could have found a better hourglass. I think that would have added some more mystique to the scene :). I thought the radiosity buildings blended nicely into the water scenes too, very good stuff.
How about trying to adapt a short story that is widely accepted as being a great story next time and see how people will change their opinions. And make it completely crazy like in a David Lynch movie.. That would rock :)

Hey Loaderror!
The problem with david lynch movies is that close to nobody understands anything at all. Besides that, of course, great idea! I personally dig that david lynch style quite a lot. But mezcal is right in that case: this is the demoscene, not a bunch of philosophers.
Concerning the hourglass, you're right of course. Funny thing is, it's very difficult to find one nowadays. We went to ~10 different shops and asked for one, but people still think that digital watches are a pretty neat idea indeed ;)
I very much agree with gargaj, thank you for your comment. i really overreacted, also due to other things that happened at this year's breakpoint.
So, i thought a lot of all your comments and the feedback i got in general, and i came to that conclusion:
1. i'm sorry for my accusations. of course demoscene-projects are about the personal taste of sceners :)
2. expect nothing next time. I'm going back to the roots, so i'll just do what i'm feeling like, without any regard to predictions of "taste" whatsoever. Thus, maybe many people will hate my next prod, but i'm okay with that. It will be different though.
Some words about acting: faith improved a great deal since out back into. i think you should honor that the same as you do the progress of several coders that are around in the demoscene.
:)

well after watching Mulholland drive I didn't get anything, but in its unpredictabilitness it scared the shit out of me.there are some mixed comments here about hitting your audience and people not being your audience. As long as you're not making any money on this I think you should just pursue whatever style you want to do and do it thorougly and don't care about what some sceners will think. You might not win the contests, but you will win the minds (i prefer to say brains) when people get over the 1st time watch.
personal taste will be personal taste. I guess the demoscene is an audience, but they wil have the shortcomings of every audience. You can never please the limp bizkit people and the gyorgy ligety (or something like that) people at the same time anyway. I Agree with 2). Yes and I think the acting was better. I would love to hear the lines in german though, without a context it seems strange that she would say these words in english. Sometimes I feel that people from Oslo (norwegian capital) can't swear because what comes out of their mouths just sounds like lubricants anyway. It felt very close to authentic english to me, but Tony Blair sounds more english :)
I think you are making some brave moves into a territory that is not covered by anyone else in the scene.

Most comments here at pouet hurt as they're insulting as usual. Jco: Don't take them too personal. If I want to become depressions, I go to pouet and watch the comments concerning my productions. These here are no exception. If not, I mostly avoid visiting it.
After watching this wildie at the party I knew that this would not going to win. The story was too obvious, too straight for me. It's all well done but the the bp visitors simply missed the usual jco kick. Nothing here slapped in your face. Go on doing your nice job!
You now know what the Sceners want and what they deserve! ;-)

for me, it should have won.
I just want to add that only good/remarkable things get parodied in latter productions. Therefore are remembered. And what's more terrible to a production than beeing forgotten. Keep that in mind.
For this movie I'm with Doh and Monroe coz I agree with their explanations.

Ehh this kinda sucked.
Had some nice small things in it though.

As Doh said, missing subtlety. But i don't really care about that. I have seen it a couple of times now and still _really_ like it. Best ever!

:)
really cool soundtrack & idea, for that Video
i like it ...
i like it ...
thumb was also missing here. marvellous soundtrack.
great
Sir summed it up pretty well ;D
Apart from that. Nice soundtrack, but the visuals might have been more interesting back when I first discovered Deine Lakaien in early teenage years... =/
