Here it is. Not a real demo for not a real demoparty. Still, we put quite a lot of work into this; it does even have a webpage: http://www.nesnausk.org/inoutside, yay! Pixel shader 2.0 required, sorry :)

Both the "demo" mode and the interactive portion are nicely polished and somewhat entertaining. I'm no fan of the music though.

52 MB packed for 1 or 2 scenes? :)

Nice work but I did not dig it somehow, maybe because something "demoscenish" is missing about it ;)
Thumb up for the realization though (despite the unjustified 52 MB imo...)

one of the best around!!
rulez added on the 2005-05-30 14:32:46 by pinkpanther pinkpanther
keops: the size limit was 150MB zipped, so we managed to reach only 1/3rd of that :) (why so large - 70% of the size is normalmaps; I didn't want to compress them)
added on the 2005-05-30 14:37:58 by NeARAZ NeARAZ
nesnausk! killed me ! best gfx ever ...normal map ..+ ps 2.0 + super cool gfx ...arghhh
rulez added on the 2005-05-30 16:20:47 by nytrik nytrik
A question came to my mind reading Keops' post: Would it be OK to nominate this for a Scene.Org award? (Given that it would fit in a category.) As said, something demoscenish is missing, though I'm sure the guys from Nesnausk would appreciate a Scene.Org award more than Aenima did (or didn't, actually).

Anyway. NeARAZ, great work, see you and OneHalf again at Assembly ;)

@gargaj: why shouldn't this simply fit into the demo-category?

xeNusion/nytrik: erm, actually the demo is extremely low-poly (i.e. it doesn't go over 200k tris/frame even though the culling is crappy)
added on the 2005-05-30 17:44:34 by NeARAZ NeARAZ
I'm very impressed, mostly by the cool story and thought behind it. Sure beats the mindless and boring effect scripts of most modern demos.

52mb for zip and 33mb for the video???

Doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of making realtime demos?

very cool, but its way to large for my opinion. yes big creds to the makers! its really cool. but from when was 'low-poly' under 200k triangles/frame? ;) havent used over 20k myself ;) but yes, im poor :D
thnx for video!
rulez added on the 2005-05-30 18:07:34 by quisten quisten
quisten: well, if you consider that you can easily push several million tris/frame on modern HW, then a measly 200k isn't exactly high-poly :)

keops/shane: it was a wrong technology decision from my part to use object space (and not tangent space) normalmaps - they're nice, but don't compress well. But hey, at least we didn't reach the size of 3DMark!

since this is an imaginecup-entry, i'm not going to bitch about the size... creds for cool modelling and some good looking rendering, but it was a bit too cheesy and empty/boring for my taste. still well worth a solid thumb.

after watching this piece of art, i can only say one thing... superb!
the closest thing to an artistic 3d version of the movie(s) CUBE (here it is toxie!:), or atleast, thats what it triggered in my mind.., good use of all possible 2.0 shaders out there i think, nice music, cool design, im loving it!!

The only thing its really missing, is some good ol' 2D artwork and a starfield! =)

ok let's see:

[-] textures
[-] zip size
[-] too short
[-] color scheme
[-] the white inbox doesn't fit the outbox (look for "All is full of Love" and "Second Bad Vilbel")
[-] ambient occlusion looks like hand drawn lightmaps
[-] depth of field

[+] smooth rendering
[+] excellent animation
[+] using some effects that I wanted to use in my next prod :)
[+] a story that fits to the theme of the contest
[+] for representing demoscene on Imagine Cup :)
[+] for lot of work very nice done

And in my calculus it means a big thumb UP :)

keep it going!

added on the 2005-05-31 09:04:08 by _-_-__ _-_-__
it seemed pretty average to me to be honest.

looks good compared to a lot of demos because a) they bothered to put some effort into the modelling, rather than just making cubes and b) they used some typical but modern techniques to make it look less plain than most 3d demos.

it looked ok, ran ok (music wasnt great tho).
btw, the art looked a bit 64k-ish for 50mb. the textures, normalmaps and environment models looked really generated, with only the statue and the character standing out. the colours were dull too - it was too washed out and plain. didnt like the anims that much either, e.g. the wall hitting was really un-solid. it generally seemed to lack style, looked a bit too much like a plain standard videogame demo.

oh, your dof effect looked a bit bad (or maybe it just wasnt well used? dunno. seemed just to smudge the out of focus object a bit rather than actually make some decent dof effect). the shadows looked a bit bad too, it basically looks like you blatted a planar shadow on the flat floor, cos self shadowing isnt at all evident :)

you had a lot of potential from syntonic dentiforms, but i dont think it's been lived up to yet.

the sad thing is that this does stand out compared to most demos, which is more a reflection on other demos than this one. :) sorry. good luck in the imagine cup tho.

Well, yeah. Kinda big, but ran smooth in my 9600, the animations and gfx were absolutely great, and yey for the concept and the very well done direction!!!

OK, no demo feeling, and not very good physics/reality in interaction between objects (robot sitting down and table breaks, robot hits walls). But there was definately quality in the models, textures and normal maps. Also liked the smooth robot movements.

As to it's a demo or not:
IMHO stuff like this has been done in demo's for a long time. Remember Tribes? ..or more recently: Relais?

+ Super animations!
+ Using more effects than just glow and env
+ No humour
+ The castle looks good to me (except that it perhaps should have been evil bluish techno world instead).
+ Cool energy joints in the main character
+ Rather good try at a story

- No evil bluish technoworld behind the walls
- Main character seems to be a bit clumsy and his sixpack won't attrac many female bots.. Why this muscular explorer? I don't think Christopher Columbus was a heap of protein power.( ooh I'm all lonely , luckily I have my sixpack so I can crush my surroundings).

Some nice style, and better-than-average quality 3d. But it really left me feeling a bit disappointed. The subject is interesting enough, but isn't explored, just represented in a very simple way. Also, the animation didn't live up to the quality of the rest of the work, and the fact that the character can't break out of his prison and has to use some kind of video-game super-power looked a bit silly.

Thumb up for the good things and for putting in the work tho.

enjoyed it, really. character animation is certainly exceptional for a demo. only i hate it when one tries to enlighten me with stupid, obvious morals in the end ("be free to ..."). just leave the fresh piece without redundant education, plz.
rulez added on the 2005-06-09 22:42:41 by monroe monroe
Great graphics and animation. I only dislike some lowres texture details on the robot and the music, which doesn't fit at all with the idea.
Oh and I agree with monroe about the morals :)

Still, really great!
rulez added on the 2005-06-09 23:35:40 by ithaqua ithaqua
monroe: hey, the whole required contest theme was "dissolving boundaries". as our 'story' was half-made before knowing the theme, we just had to make something that would make the demo "fit in the theme". writing some stupid morals at the end was the easiest way =]

no, it's not demoscene event, but it has "rendering" category ("realtime computer graphics" would be better name) and most of works are something close to demos, others are games or interactive computer graphics

It's neato to see many modern features implemented in one demo. Looks fancy and runs smooth. However, as a demoscene production goes, the best bit was the wall particle animation. That was the closest thing to an "effect" rather than a "technique", if you catch my drift.

The interactive extra reminds me of the A500 days of sinus bob parameters and whatnot.

One of the most impressive productions... AND it runs like a charm in 1280x1024! Nice story, great job!

+ very good performance on lowend nvidia 6200
+ nice mocap (??)
+ good design
+ unobtrusive, mellow bg music
+ interactive mode

hermes: it's all hand-animated. No mocap here.

Quite nice, actually.

For most parts, I like the soothing music and the story is also not bad, although not producing goosebumps on my skin.

And quite depressing, I must say - so, if I go and explore the boundaries, I will only discover the same crap over and over again?

Big piggy.
damn that was pretty cool, and fun :)

...really great animations!

Some kind of dance act with DJ Bobo moves, after the 3 robots met, would have been cool though... ;O)
