Requires pixel shaders 2.0.
May work on nvidia cards too (or not).

i dont have any music here.
And if that white thing is a scroller, then it doesnt work here, i only see a C letter, resetting its own position every second.
ATI 9600XT/P4 2,8Ghz here.
Hardware Problem?

I've misunderstood the .nfo, i thought there had some music :) but it was in fact the musician! hehe :) still, from the screenshot and from what i've seen (a bit), it's actually nice, and deserves a

The mythos built behind the pixel shaders being a "precious" gift is rather interesting, i see it easily impresses the simple minds.

For your information and if you understand what it implies, everything it processed through a pixel shader which creates the chessboard & the scrolltext (and the rest), so it's not just one of these blur / glow / post process shaders you rip from web tutorials to create your lame 3ds replayers you present as "demos".

Considering the size, this couldn't be done without shaders, which are encoded in a form that is easier to compress than x86 code and permit graphical operations that would simply be too big to fit in 1k if done with the cpu. It's unconventional use of them and that was the goal.
2.0 because earlier shaders implementations don't have the required instructions giving the ability to create real small programs.

This is a glimpse of 4k & 64k intros' future you're seeing there.

get a clue n00b! most (not totally outdated and/or cheap ass) graphic cards have ps2.0, so why don't use them?

Well, i agree with that it´ll be the future of the intros, but i see this intro a bit disapointing considering the potential (no, making oldskool looking effect doesn't mean making quality). And relax your ego!

Just for the record, I do know what a pixel shader is, and know how to program them. I just expect that they are usually used made to do cool things instead of a basic chessboard (with a nice shading, I grant you that). And as far as "lame 3ds replayers" with ripped code go, I decide not to be insulted (never coded such a thing in my life, with or without ripped code).

And I thought it was enough in this context for a comment with an opinion which isn't expressed that serious. Now I see that I failed. Sorry.

Actually my card is 2 years old and it costed me about 100 Euros. Maybe it's expensive considering the fact I don't use it for games or other stuff, just demos. But since I like demos, I bought a card which will do it for some time.

So pretty easy; this wasn't a demo for the platform you own. End of story. I don't see why you need to be upset about that. Let the guys innovate a little, then in a couple of years when PS2.0 is standard everywhere, even you will benefit from todays experiments like this.

OMG. we're already at PS3.0!
Excellent 1K using DirectX 9 PS 2.0 instruction set.
Runs smooth on my Radeon.
ALiENs love effects calculated on a per-pixel basis.
Chessboards and arithmetic instructions should dominate the world.
My favorite C64-chessboard in the mid eighties:
Star Frontiers (SF) legendary "Pacer" (Quark)
http://www.baetzler.de/c64/demos/data/pacer_(sf).p00

A version without the SF logo was the first price winner in a graphics competition of German "C64" mag. Big bizz. ;)

Instead of "opinion", i hesitate between "ignorance" & "insincerity"
but i guess that's more about something nauseous that have been floating between us two for some times now,
if you want to clear this...

As a (rather friendly) side note, try to do a good looking 1k effect sometimes, even just for yourself,
you'll see that it's everything but easy, you'll see how you have to juggle with every opcodes and craft the effect
so that eg. the colors variables are the same as the ones used for the movements, the code instructions must be ordered
to maximize the compression ratio and all that sort of amusing little things...
More generally you'll fight bytes for bytes...

Quote:

Good but i suspected that already.

Quote:

I think chessboards (shaded or not) are cool, the shader does the scrolltext aswell.

I'm talking about shaders as a way to produce alien datas not just as support for (post) processing gfx stuff solely.
Actually i also did some shaders to work on sound but the whole couldn't fit with the rest in 1k, of course.

I am still not sure where ps2.0 are used. Here, I get a blank screen. At another netcafe PC I had the same bouncing first letter. So I thought, are they vertex shaders moving the vertices of the scroller polygons? Not that I know anything about ps, but I tried to figure out where? Perhaps the shading of the chessboard? Nothing that cannot be done with no shaders. I guess someone will do a plain version soon in the same size ;)

Don't think about shaders just being a gpu unit able to make shades or blur or whatever post processing fxs are. Here, everything is done with the shader, the sine, the scroll, the chessboard & the shade, the framework is only opening directx, creating the shader's context & sending the values to move the board & the scroll to the shader which does all the rest.

Quote:

Not as a 1k windows executable, i assure you.

Quote:

Perhaps you downloaded the first version because i've updated it afterwards to fix that issue (i hope).

why not adding a few more instructions to the shader to cast another ray back from the plane and have the scroller reflecting on the chessboard?
and another one for shadow.

I don't see what's wrong about wondering loud if PS2.0 are really necessary for a 1 color scrolltext and a chessboard. There's nothing more to see but an interrogation.

And for the proof of concept I'd really like to see a PS1.x version of this intro.

Oh, and the GF4 I bought at 60€ ~3 years ago can still run most of the recent prods. I watch the PS2.0 ones in videos.

However, the screenshot of this 1k looks cool.

i really don't see the problem with doing some tinysize shaders. i guess it's a lot of fun to do, maybe a relatively 'new' thing to do and as such an interesting avenue for tinysize coders. that said, tinysize intros always suck. you can't ever make stuff much below 4k an interesting experience.

but you ps2 flamers are totally forgetting that tinytros are generally made for the coder's enjoyment. i can't hardly imagine hitchhikr expected fame and glory from this. and, well, i guess it's good that someone shows that shaders are actually smaller than non-shaders doing the same thing. in about a year you shouldn't expect to be able to run any decent 4k if you don't have hip shader support.
added on the 2005-09-04 15:30:01 by skrebbel skrebbel
Well, if i was seeking fame & glory that's what i'll do:

- Find a recipe to be able to reach highest ranks in parties competitions and stick to it forever.
- Only release productions at parties because it's more fame & glory++.
- Spend more than 3 weeks on a production.

And that's what i actually do:

- Experiment in many directions & try to do stuff i haven't done before.
- Never release anything at parties (as a matter of fact don't give a flying shit about these events).
- NEver spend more than 3 weeks on a production.

Regarding all this sad thread i'd like to add that, to scornful attitudes i answer with the same bad manners.

Now if you like me it's nice and if you don't like me it's nice.
