Complete and utter rulage. You have my massive respect for doing something this cool, atmospheric and good-looking in 1k.

Cozy and gloomy! Tried it with shadows?

Didn't listen to the ringing phone since my gf is watching TV in the same room and she prefers the TV sound ...

but yeah, i mean, it aint really a 1k if you need to put in the directory that d3dx9_25.dll which is itself around 2.22MB...so, well..

Yeah it aint really a 1k if you need to install an operating system to make even the simplest task with your computer.

Download the official directx distrib instead of juggling with dlls: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=0A9B6820-BFBB-4799-9908-D418CDEAC197&displaylang=en

is d3dx9_25.dll only released in the 150MB + SDK?
Doesn´t seem to be included in directx_9c_redist.exe
added on the 2005-05-29 01:52:39 by r0XX0r r0XX0r
it's included in the redist, afaik (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9226a611-62fe-4f61-aba1-914185249413&displaylang=en)

but afaik NOT in the End User runtime yet.

the well known 4k parsec used the same stuff. and i guess it will soon be a default directx library (if it isn't already).
Everything that is hardware accelerated is not really 1k, 4k, 64k ... today, cuz it uses system libs.

D3DXCreateBox eheheheheh, could you make a version with a teapot instead? :D

nice choice of colors :)

crashes at exit, no sound

what's the point of a 1ko prod when it requires a 2mo dll ?
The volume of the sound is rather low
added on the 2005-05-29 23:16:04 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
"the gfx RULEZ" ?

it's cubes + lighting Oo!

someone explains please
hitch: ok got well hmm "sound" this time after having pumped up the volume :)
I'll explain you:

Here i played with darkness & lighting to set the gloomy mood & to make the volumes appear to be more numerous than they really are.

This is not really about what you present but more about how you present it.
added on the 2005-05-29 23:28:11 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
ok i was curious about the motivation
no sound (or strange background sound) and external dll used, it's not really 1k. but general layout is ok and prod is fine for 1k so piggy :)
added on the 2005-05-30 00:05:12 by r00t r00t
Nothing is really 1k or 4k or 64k or whatever size limited stuff, there's still dependencies of some kind. The dll i used (which was also used in the 4k intro "parsec") will soon be shipped with every directx around, it just comes a little bit before it's time.

And don't think doing such stuff it's just a matter of calling an external dll function (and even that takes bytes too, so it's never for "free") that would do everything, you can't directly write on the screen as it was possible under dos or on other machines, you have to open a window, obtain a directx interface, etc.,
Opening a window & obtaining a directx screen & setting a projection matrix & waiting for the esc key with a frame counter, all that in a windows exe, takes approx 550 bytes once packed.

Asm instructions & datas are gathered in a way they'll ease the compression flow of the file. Datas are re-used as much as possible to increase redundancies or are crafted to be similar in some ways, values of the processor's registers must be known at every possible step to have the opportunity to use them as a base to do operations in a smaller way (eg. directx calls returning 0 in eax if everything went fine, etc.), not to forget the structure of windows executables files which is rather big (in a 1k world, everything is big) and have to be crafted by hand too (optimizing tools aren't precise enough).

And that's not all, you must think carefully about what you want to show because you just can't do any effect you can see all around, there's simply no room for this, sometimes you can't even choose the colors as it may break the flow of compression, etc.

1k of brainfuck.

Btw, i uploaded an improved version (with a less harsh sound in stereo this time).

it isn`t working here, xp sp1, dx9 + dlls above.
maby some kind of video, or debug version? :>
added on the 2005-05-30 20:04:21 by beton beton
I'm using the same xp version, the requirements aren't too high unless your gfxcard can't display 800x600x32 screen, Also it works in dx retail & debug mode. I don't know if it works on nvidia cards, but i guess it does.

sorry dude, but if i need a dll from the dx SDK to get this running, it isn't that small anymore.
added on the 2005-05-31 08:54:47 by gloom gloom
Prepare to be sorry for a long time then, because in the future you'll see a *lot* of 4k & 64k intros using the same dll under this name or an other (and it have already begun with the winning bp 4k). It is exploding plastic inevitable.

nice work, btw :)

Worked. If they objects would move slower it would be chimera in 1k. Or add the size of the freaking dll to it, and bitch and moan. Oh, and we shoudln't allow mp3's either because they're not realtime calculated, either... could we just get over ourselves please and just comment on what's there? (yeah I do the complaining about how it's made too. Doesn't mean it's right.)
i am deeply amazed.

good one, a mini hplus.
it's strange that mszip packs it better than lzx.

Out of curiosity, do anyone knows what the dll is for?

[btw, Gem, I think you mean Chimera, not hplus ;)]

At first i used your dropper utility but it wasn't able compress it enough so i had to make my own tool.
Note that the packed version and the unpacked one are the same byte for byte (no ordinal imports, etc.).

That dll is the new incarnation of the directx helper library. Ms don't leave any alternative as it doesn't exist as a static library anymore.

YAY.!

taken from the Encyclopedia Galaxia (revision 2101) :
one of the first 1k-Intros that used d3d was done by hitchhikr who showed off some very nice red-gloomed lighted stretched-Cubes.!
(Hint.: as it was only 1k it had NO AntiAliasing ofcourse.! but you could still put FSAA above it via GFX-Card-Drivers ;) )
There have been several Rants back then in 2005 about "its not a real-1k if it uses an external lib",
but 2 years later no1 had a Rant left and nearly every1 used d3d or Ogl in 1k/4k-productions.!

Hitchhikr was later on the first to....(...)
