I was looking for the new GP32 (I don't know it's name) and I found that! WTF?
If it's a bit like a PSP and has TV out I'll buy it... even if I don't like it....

Well well guy.

Once there was a South Korean company called "GamePark" who produced the GP32 in 2001.

When they wanted to create it's successor, the was a little riot within the company. So about 98% of the company left GamePark and established "GamePark Holdings", to create the GP2x.

The original company, GamePark, however wanted to do a 3D handheld called XGP with maximum power and focused on commercial companies who will support the handheld, to get in competition with Nintendo and Sony. But the company is small since the loss of the old GP32 developers. Therefor it will take a lot of time until the device comes out. And some doubt that it will ever come out.

GP2x is out by now. You can get it at http://shop.gp2x.de or http://www.gbax.com. Most people see it as the true successor of the GP32 since it supports the homebrewn scene more than ever before.

Errr. Yes. Get more infos at the world's largest community at http://www.gp32x.com. There aren't any demos out for it yet by the way.

Lik Sang lists following bugs that the first edition comes with and there are probably more:

• Practically many videos are not playable without capping them.
• There are reports of Xvid playing too fast, and DivX sound not in sync with video.
• There is a battery problem, 2 hours battery-life with standard batteries only.
• There is no power supply or charger included with the GP2X.
• Stereo jack sinks on some units, because of poor soldering.
• The speakers are mono instead of stereo.
• Headphone channels are switched, left is not left.
• The action buttons are too small. Your thumb can cover all four.
• There is a large joystick deadzone (that can be fixed with a "mod" according to a distributor).
• Uneven color distribution on the screen and other LCD problems.
• Long boot time (28 seconds).
• Compatibility problems with some brands, types or sizes of Flash Cards.
• USB Connection and incompatibility problems with Windows XP (apparently fixed with latest Firmware).

The so-called "First Edition" don't has this name for no reason. It was a beta version, which was sent out to the press and distributors to get a first feeling of the machine.

The ones who go out to the customers don't have those errors anymore.

My personal point of view:

Oh, reports.
I can only report that everything works fine. I tried a couple of non-resized TV shows and movies and it always was fine.

Also, the codec software will be improved with every new firmware (the latest was only released a week ago) and everyone can improve those by themselfs.

"Standard" batteries are TV remote control batteries. Of course they won't last for more than 2 hours.. Neither in a GP2x, GameBoy nor any other AA driven machine.

Take normal GameBoy and electronic devices batteries. Then it will last for much longer.

...which won't be in the final edition.

Quote:
The speakers are mono instead of stereo.

...which is a software problem and has been solved a month ago.

Quote:

See above.

So does the PlayStation pad. I hate the PlayStation pad.

Which means: This is a personal thing. If you want to bring the GP2x down with arguments, you can do it. So can I with other devices.

Yadda yadda, I can only repeat myself with the other points.

freeze: great way to promote the machine by sending out faulty version which was also sold until ppl pointed out the faults. I wouldn't trust the machine nor the company after that...

violator:

True, but please tell me a company which produced a perfect running system from scratch. At least here we have the possibility to change the errors. And they were fixed.

Gunpei Yokoi also released the VB, don't forget that. <:)

And the first GB run also had problems with the screen.

freeze: I hope they fix the next version and if I was rich I might consider getting that toy :) I just got a gameboy micro famicom version so no more toys this year :)

What the heck??

I also got my GameBoy micro yesterday, and also the Famicom version. :D It rocks so hard. Very sexy design.

And yes, most of the "software mistakes" have been solved by now. GamePark Holdings and the community are releasing firewares and bugfixes and some nice BIOS tools very often lately. You can even have the Linux shell and a graphical user interface if you want.

I think GP2x is too expensive.

I think PSP is too expensive and the GP2x offers a good cost/performance ratio when you think about all the software you get (also the devkit).
