Demobit – Resurrection 2017; Binarium, Bratislava - 27th-29th of January 2017

In January 2017, audio – visual computer art will get another exceptional chance to present itself! Slovak demoscene has a lot to offer and now its resurrection is coming!

The significant speakers and interprets who were grown up by international demoscene, but have reached further important achievements in various different areas, have already accepted invitations. Now, we would like to proudly invite all of you whose interests exceed everyday perception of reality and want to enjoy an extraordinary party.

Demobit is a sentimental Slovak demoscene event that took place in Bratislava and Nitra more than 20 years ago and since then has been lying dormant. Now, the first Demobit organizers and participants are 20 years older, full of fond memories, grinded skills and they have decided to bring Demobit back to life. Now, you can also meet the people who have created the history of the Slovak and international demoscene.

We want to make this celebration of computer subculture art remarkable so the whole program is built on the combination of speakers, who are crucial for demoscene, live concerts and competitions in various categories.

For the first year of resurrected Demobit party, we have already attracted important veterans on demoscene. We are honored to welcome an expert in creative engineering - Kostas “Navis” Pataridis who is a moving force of Andromeda Software Development. To hear his thoughts and meanings behind ASD’s demos will be precious. Daniel “Redox” Sýkora who based MovSD group, gained experiences in Disney Animated Studios and is regular Siggraph speaker. In the present, he is focused on visual style of classic animated film. Michal “Kiero” Wozniak is a computer graphics expert with more than 15 years experience in programming demos, mostly Amiga. Amiga demo programming will be also the main topic of his presentation. Jan “Řrrola” Kadlec is a master of minimalistic assembler code and will give us a lecture on this topic. Portuguese speaker Filipe “PSenough” Cruz Informatics Engineer and a self-taught digital artist, presenting his netlabel experiences and how it relates to demoscene roots. The last one confirmed is Miloš “Baze” Bazelides who is an experienced soft engineer and is aware of performance implications of various computing platforms.

What kind of party it would be without a live music!? What about a rock music represented by Hungarian band SIDrip Alliance which plays remixes of C64 SID tunes live? The first place in wild demo/animation category in 2015 only boosts their reputation. The domestic scene will be represented by Slovak rock band Lost Clusters.

Stroon & Stix are among the most prolific and versatile musicians around Slovakia. Straight mid-tempo beats, as well as low tempo experiments, are cloaked in synth scapes of his trademark sound. On top of that, sparkling sound of vibraphone radiates. Stix’s live visuals are balancing on the edge of game art, they often feature worlds that move to the dynamic of sound, thematically bound to its atmosphere.

Catchy, noisy, funky and fearless – that is simply Goto80 from Sweden. His live shows are usually an explosion of genres, seamlessly mixing pop, acid, electro and punk together in his own particular 8-bit style. And guess what, he is coming too! Accompanied by visual alchemist Zden, whose visual language oscillates between early net.art aesthetics, video glitching, generative art and geometric minimalism.

If you want to join the competition, your programming skills could be exposed in these categories: PC demo, combined 64k/8k PC intro, combined PC 256B/4kB Intro, wild demo, combined music, combined graphics, combined oldskool demo, combined old skool intro and photo competition. The rules are specified in detail on our website. The prizes and awards will be announced soon.

The party will take place in completely new multifunction premises of Binarium. The plasma wall projection is around 4m wide with proper audio where 120 places for seating are in front of the stage and 80 places in other (side) areas for a table with café/bar/restaurant. Blade Runner styled 'White Dragon' restaurant serves some preselected menu (so warm proper food in party place!). In catering area, there is a mirrored main screen projection. However, there is no direct suitable sleeping area on the party floor, we will get a place on upper floors for proper rest with showers. We recommend you hotel Družba as a cheap alternative close to the partyplace.

We put effort to enhance the comfort and high standards of the party bringing awareness also for the broader audience. Those who want to show off or experience programming, artistic and musical possibilities of demos are cordially invited. Create contacts, share knowledge, experience art, enjoy the party and show off your coding skills!

hi Canopy, we probably won't meet at HQ as I left the company after many years in mid-summer. I wasn't at last Zranica either, but many ex-collegues are heading to Demobit, so maybe you can connect it with some work duties in here and join too? :-)

Hey guys,

we put 5000 euros to prize budget and 20% of it goes to PC Demo category! Anyway,
still lots of money for remaining categories. We have decided that money will be the best reward for the best coders, so you can do with that what you want...

Demobit has a special gift for contestants: ARTISTIC JURY AWARD by prominent Slovak designer ASOT HAAS.

The most original and artistically valuable demo will be selected by The Members of Artistic Jury consisting of design experts.
Asot Haas dedicated to the competition as a trophy 1m high sculpture from his recent series "RESONANCE OF SOUND".

His optical illusions connect what seems to be irreconcilable - to capture sound in real-time and re-shape it into a static light object. The collection of two "competing" magnitudes - light ad sound" is created by the technique using plexiglass, vibrating sound, whilst being light objects.
The precious beautiful artistic award worth to win!

wondering if it's worth renting a car instead of dealing with all the public transport logistics
added on the 2017-01-01 05:38:33 by psenough psenough
I do not think so that rent a car is necessary, Uber will be enough :)
added on the 2017-01-02 22:05:26 by natalia natalia
Uber requires catching free wifi everywhere or expensive roaming with data

With all the special features and events, prize money and exotic(for most of us anyway) partylocation Country, I am puzzled why not more of the "usual suspects" are not going to Demobit.
Its a simple flight to VIENNA, and 1-2hour public transport from there to Bratislava.
C'mon people, lets go to DEMOBIT and BRATISLAVA for a new experience in demoscene and eastern European culture. Or stay at home, more cheap beer for us :P
