Impulse Project - Demoscene Podcast

category: general [glöplog]
Hey guys, just wanted to share a new show (podcast) that I started called Impulse Project that focuses on music from the demoscene and the tracking community.

anyways, the purpose of the show is basically to play some tracks, talk about them a bit (and the composer) and discover new stuff too. I'm not an expert by any means but I think it should be fun. I co-host a VGM podcast called Pixelated Audio but I've always really wanted to be able to share demoscene music since it was a big part of my life growing up.

If anyone wants to join in on an episode, I'd be more than happy to do it. i have some composers lined up to guest-host down the road but this community is what inspired me to start the show.

Check out. I have an intro show up that explains the podcast and we just released ep03

Why not make SceneSat shows out of it? They have MP3 downloads of the shows afterwards too. http://www.scenesat.com/archive

never even crossed my mind. good idea Salinga! wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in a demoscene podcast :) all my episodes are in mp3 format that you can download from the site too but i'll look into SceneSat

I like the show so far, especially the discussion of the innards of a tune (samples, channels etc.). Some feedback:

- You make a point of mentioning the filesize for every tune, but state the year it was composed only sometimes, and mostly later during discussion. That strikes me as odd; I find the year of release much more important, as it provides context.

- I hope you won't fall into the trap of focusing too much on nostalgia and the past ("I remember this from when I was a kid..."). There are many great modern tunes! What about including a regular segment where you play and discuss a tune from last year? Many people don't have the time to download and listen to all the results of tracked music compos from recent demoparties, so something like this would be a real benefit!

- Definitely keep the podcast format! It makes it much easier to integrate into podcast software for automatic download etc.

also bitfellas have been running a demoscene/retro focussed podcast for ages now. I dont mean to say you should not do it now, but you should have a look at those and maybe work together (not sure if they are looking for new podcasters).

The BitJam podcast has a different format, they "only" play music. The Impulse Project podcast also has hosts who provide info about the played tracks and analyse them a bit.

Cool stuff!. My only issue with the Amiga .mod's. Most of the trackers I know who write them would rather have them played in straight mono. Any kinda of stereo separation sounds pretty rough, drum samples jumping from left to right etc. If you have to stereo separate, try and keep it really minimal.

Also +1 for newer stuff.

good point, i'll definitely start clarifying the year when we bring in the track. Sometimes I can't find any info on the track but I'll make sure to say that so nobody stays in the dark!

totally agree, I think that we're still so new we've played a lot of older stuff to find our pacing. we try to throw in a few never things here and there but yeah, we want to at least bring a few newer tracks into each episode. The recent demo parties compos is totally a great idea. Maybe do a show on entries we liked or the top 8 or something... solid!

for sure... yeah.. i sorta fell victim to that in our last episode. I used protracker to export Knulla-kuk and forgot to do a 50/50 stereo fade. separations is great and i think needed but not straight L/R panning. really hard to listen to with earphones :/

So far so good. I'd like a larger ratio of music-to-talking (currently you play a tune for 2-3 minutes but then talk about it for 5-7 minutes) but so far everything is going well. I've subscribed.

more talking? or more half and half? let me know and i'll consider it for sure!

we release episode 5 last week to kinda bring SID music also into the mix. hope you guys like it. episode 6 will be out next week with a slow jams theme. a bit of a departure from what i typically listen to but still fun with some new stuff too.

Less talking. I get antsy if you talk about the tune for so long that you have to loop the tune in the background more than once. But that's just me; do whatever is the most fun for you.

Hooray for talking, as long as it's at least fairly interesting with guests that know what they're talking about :)
