category: residue [glöplog]
Why is Apple so much hated in the Demoscene?

Please state valid and factual reasons only.
They didn't create the Amiga.
all the cool kids love it.

Since 2004 I've owned 1 iBook, 3 MacBooks (white) and now a Pro. They all had "involuntary" repairs done on them. That's a really bad and expensive statistic, yet they look sexy so I'll buy.

Also Apple Service in .NL was fucking terrible supposedly until now, I have an appointment with a "genius" tomorrow to fix the n-th problem, this time it's chargers not being detected properly.

So as much as I love Apple, I hate it equally.

For their sloppy slogans like this one: "iThink, therefore iMac".

Based on what factual reasons do you think Apple is hated in the scene? And how does the scene specifically hate Apple?

at revision at least 50% of all notebooks were apple macbooks, so i wouldnt say they are "hated" (the haters just shout the loudest).

anyway, valid point to dislike apple:

- they are hip (we all hate hipsters and love underground, right? ;)
- they tell the user how to use their devices and lock them down (applies even more to iOS devices)
- many of their products are ridiculy overpriced and still sell like butter
- their hardware manufacturers exploit their workforce (but well, to point that only on apple would be unfair since others are doing it too but they sure as hell wouldnt have to with all their profits... keeping the stockholders happy seems more important than the few foxconn suicides now and then...)
- they like patent wars (again, thats not only apple but they tend to push it even further)
- every apple product i bought (well, 2 so far.. an iPod in 2001 and a macbook in 2007) broke in under 3 month (ok that might have been coincedence, but it hurt)
- iTunes

having that said i dont like fanboyism nor haters, everybody should be respected for their choice of brand. Doesnt mean i have to buy the same, right?

— hypocrisy of various flavors
— ridiculous patent trolling
— dislike of open standards
— incessant capital hoarding (to the point where they literally don't know what to do with it)
— wrapping every product in the aura of New Age mysticism and other kinds of brainwashing

@noby: I've seen many 'fuckings' to Apple in the past on pouet, it's a bit an abusive generalization to say it is hated in the scene so.

I thought the fact that Apple external good looking designs being copy of Dieter's Ram was a main cause:

there is more :

BB Image

IMHO the only thing Apple can be credited for is creating an image that appeals to people enough for them to shell out ridiculous amounts of money for generic hardware in a pretty casing.
To be compared with Channel, Cartier, Porsche, Vuitton, ...

Someone invents good hardware for it's time. Someone else wraps it in a pretty bow, markets it as the top-of-the-woz, charges a premium and becomes head of the company.

Sheeple go out in droves to buy it cause the ads say it's da' fucking bomb!
Hipsters follow Sheeple cause "they mus know what they talking about, man."
CEO devises marketing plan where they put ho-hum hardware in real purdy packaging, nick software/os ideas off the geeks for free and sell the brand and logo rather than the product. He cynically thinks there may be just a few people dumb enough to fall for it. Unfortunately there are...

Repeat ad-infinituum, slightly increasing the advancement of the hard/soft-ware incrementally whilst putting it in prettier and prettier cases - all the while still emphasizing the selling point of the brand rather than product itself.

Congratulations you have now passed "Fucking good marketing 101".
CEO carks it from cancer of the irony because he doesn't believe in the ability of modern medicine and all it's technological advancements to cure/treat him effectively.

Personally I don't hate Apple, I only hate their marketing strategy. Yes, they produce good and reliable hardware. But that doesn't mean it worths three times more than any other manufacturer's product. I don't like to pay for the logo. Or at least not this much.
The other annoying thing is controlled obsolescence. An iPhone would last over 10 years without any defect, yet they release a new model each year so you can spend those huge amounts again, probably for just minor improvements. 'Cause if you don't have the latest iPhone, you're not cool. Yeah, that's my problem with Apple.

they broke their promise to keep making https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FingerWorks keyboards when they bought the company. these were zeroforce multi-touch keyboards that were for ppl with rsi and carpal tunnel syndrome, and made it so i could work 8 hours a day in front of computer rather than 3. mine had just broken when apple bought the company in 2005, i've had to fix it myself since then. it had the gestures you find in today's ipads and iphones, as well as being a mouse and keyboard, and worked on any os as a normal usb kb and mouse.

it fucking infuriates me that apple bought a tech for disabled ppl, stopped its production, and then fucking kept such a great tech unused for years until they could make it shiny enough. still typing on my touchstream now, and i can't understand why everyone doesnt have one.

cos their pompous presentation of practically stolen ideas makes me puke!
Not so much the actual hardware, the OS, or even the company, but rather the user cult. That may not be Apple's fault per se (although they surely cultivate it), but it puts me off enough to stay away from their stuff.
