10th Annual Scene.org Awards - Public Choice voting

category: general [glöplog]
public choice awards in music prize competitions like the grammies (at least here in .fr and .se) is pretty much a -what nominated group has the most mobilized fans- category, pity or not, face it, how are you gonna decide what is spamming and not? informing our fans on facebook that they can vote for us? just posting the link? try to cover up the fact that we are nominated?

and again, the fact that we have two nominated prods should eliminate us anyway right? I honestly don't see us having so many name voters that when divided on two prods they still makes us win.

rez, why can't you just be happy that your vote collecting worked out so well last year and that the jury let that behavior pass that time?

I thought the name "We Have Accidently Borrowed Your Votedisk" meant that you were all cool about obvious manipulation of voting, so why do you act all upset now?

I seriously don't know what the good decision is.

The only _real_ thing you could do to counter such effects, would be to not have a truely public vote at all. Maybe make a pouet.net award out of it, where only older accounts (a month? a year?) could vote.

Grammies are shit though, let's try to keep scene.org awards at least one step avote that plz. I think the rule(s) is good to have in place. How it is decided what is spam and what is not is a responsibility the organizers have to carry, and should't concern the public. Also there is a difference in saying "our prod has been nominated for an award", and adding "go vote on OUR prod" to the end.

nystep: not that i know of, no.

seriously though, the rules were most probably imposed because of the last three bullets in the list (automation and fake identities), which are basically the bane of any online voting anyway. banning advertising is sort of on the verge of being reasonable and difficult to judge or control.

in a way i suppose it's a good thing that some people still take this stuff seriously enough to actually bother advertising. i just thought it was hilarious to find that the only people i've seen doing it this year are the ones surrounded by controversy last year :)

@reed: i do not see anything hilarious here, just sad thing, especially caused by you by searching and posting our old post.

and once again, It's because I don't want to be "surrounded by controversy" that we want to have our prod removed.

Also, it's the first time in my scener life that someone said me I can't freely change/ask something to a prod I did myself. Perhaps one day Scene.org will sell DVDs of demoscene prod without asking people?

public voting is public voting. either have it completely open and let people ask for their fans to vote for them, or just remove it completely.
it's fucking ridiculous that people bitch for rez and others that they are too popular outside the usual wanking circle.

also, if rez wants his productions removed from the awards, do so.

Maybe the problem is that Razor's fans mostly come from their piracy activities ?

rez, a) the post is from february this year, b) i came across it by accident after you posted the link in the komplex thread, c) IT REALLY ISN'T THAT SERIOUS. no need to get all emo about it.

nosfe, i'm just sort of saying that if there ARE rules, let's play by the rules, no? whether or not the rules are reasonable is debatable, as i pointed out.

hitchhikr, then all the groups with any relations to any piracy at any point of time should be removed.

also, here's a special message to you all

nosfe: Absolutely, even if the scene.org awards are just a farce.

Its publics choice, whoever wins wins. The public gets what it wants. :) im pretty sure the thing that wins has to have something about it to motivate voters - most demos wouldn't win no matter how hard they advertised. although that would be an amusing experiment..

in other news, I heard some people think pop music is trite and shallow, while millions of others buy it. Go figure :)

smash: exactemundo.

in a sense though, even if you went viral and rallied tons of people to vote for something, it'd still be what the public wants :) like in that norwegian.com vote where the singer of mayhem was voted to be painted on the norwegian airplanes. which was brilliant. the organizers of the vote probably hate themselves right now, because the public probably wasn't the public they wanted, but well, tough shit :)

the whole thing is a bit of a pisstake anyway :) of course ultimately it's up to the nordic conspiracy to craft the rules for their awards and what they're after.

@reed: I removed the two messages you found on our facebook, so everybody is fine.

Ho, and if people is still annoyed by last year award I can send the award statue by mail to Navis who cames 2nd with "Happiness is Around the Bend" and remove any mention to this award so at last I will be in peace with that story.

ah, sorry :) i guess black metal just isn't my cup of blood.

rez, i honestly don't think people are genuinely annoyed, it's just worth a bit of giggles every now and then :) i can think of several sceners or groups who are the subject of worse anecdotes than that. the trick is not to take anything personally.
