Volumetric waterfalls

category: code [glöplog]

as seen in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kvl31g77Z8#t=00m46s.

Not ultra-realistic but the volumetric effect is rather striking imo.
It seems like it's achieved with smart positioning of some water textures... what's your opinion / insight on this technique?

cheers

it looks like scaling cardboard particles with physics?
yep, in a graceful way...

How you managed to be impressed by the by far LEAST good-looking bit in that video is beyond me.

Indeed.

I just haven't meet better looking real-time versions of such a thing like 'waterfalls' (I'm aware of Ryan Geiss "Waterfalls" demo for DX10).
Shitty or not, I ask myself how it's implemented.
Maybe it's just cardboard sprites :)

and btw, Geiss version is Much nicer, but lacks of the mentioned 'volumetric' effect.

seeing those geisswerk-videos on youtube reminds me of a sentence henrik wann jensen said during his keynote at goto-conference "making things look like plastic is easy".

that bumpmapping on the stone to reflect the water looks very plastic to me :)
Thinking a bit about it, it looks to be a very complex effect to simulate...

Not realtime, but one of the most impressive examples is on the film Ratatouille:

@cry-video: these are just stretched particles. They align to the movement and to the camera. Size animated. Fading out at the end. Some Gravity. Probably 2 or 4 texture variations. Easy ;P
But nice textures though.

The nvidia thing is nice as well. Much more sophisticated but of course doesn't look so "phat" on the other hand.
