Halp, the volcano won't let me go to a demoparty!

category: general [glöplog]
Outline is still about 2 weeks away but somehow I got this not-so-good feeling that the Icelandic bastard will have a fiesta by itself that will last a long time still. Since I don't want to miss the coolest party ever (you should come, too!) I started considering alternative methods of travelling. Luckily Finnair does give money back IN CASE the stupid volcano continues to dance samba in the phuturez with the expense of us poor and devoted partygoers :~((

So, how to get to the land of stroopwafels without flying? Ferry to Sweden / Germany and then lots of sitting in trains? I wonder what'd be the cheapest way... when talking about going by land, fast isn't option :)

I might miss my flight to Toronto in a week as well, here's hoping the volcano will take a chill pill.. :/

Anyho: you can take the ferry to Stockholm and then the train pretty much all the rest of the way I think.

I hope the evil Icelandic volcano-gods will allow me to go to Outline...

This page might give you some ideas (although it's written from the perspective of getting from the UK to Finland): http://www.seat61.com/Finland.htm

Ferry to Stockholm then train via Copenhagen probably makes most sense in both speed and cost though. (The X2000 train between Stockholm and Copenhagen is great, and pretty decent value as I recall)

jenni: maybe you should talk to thec - he might still have some seats left in his car. He's going from the southern part of Sweden, so that would reduce your "alone time" quite some :)

thec should be easily reachable on irc or even here :)

no London this weekend :(

Puryx: Thanks for the info, I'll consider that while having my other eye on the news :)

The latest one claims that the ash cloud is already going away and the Helsinki airport will be opened tomorrow afternoon, but again, if the volcano will go *PUM!* *SHHH!* *CRACK!* the next weeks or months, temporary opening of the airport now does no good... :)

Should we send ashtrays to Iceland?

take a propellerplane instead :)
the ns hispeed site is also quite useful for planning international trains to/from the netherlands (no regional train schedules included tho, better check national railway sites for that)

rasmus: i suggest you read engine technology 101 :)

Rowley: what, you think a rubber band is going to be affected by ash?

being dutch, i know people who tried smoking rubber bands when budget for more potent narcotics ran out, so my answer would have to be "yes"

Oneway prices for trains Stockholm - Copenhagen is ~63 euros and Copenhagen - Eindhoven ~54 euros so there and back it's actually about the same price than my plane ticket was. I get the student discount in Finland so oneway prices for train to Turku is just 11 euros and ferry to Stockholm is 8 euros (yes, I fail to see the pricing logic here, as the ferry ride is ~400km, while the train Helsinki-Turku is about 170 km...)

So, IN CASE the volcano gods are ruthless, it's not a financial disaster to go by land, but to arrive in Eindhoven (and further to Eersel) at April 29th when the party starts, I need to leave Finland already on 27th... 2,5 hrs in the train, 11 hrs on the ferry, then 21 hrs in the train again... Yes, I'd rather sit the 2,5 hrs in a plane but going to demoparty > comfortable travelling ;)

Long live demoscene \o/

I asked Google Maps where I should go if I wanted to *walk* from Stockholm to Eindhoven and this is what the mighty Internet suggested...

I guess it's bit cold for swimming...

Walk on the sea floor eh? Google Maps staff have forgotten to take their medication again...

True, but the suggestion to stop off in Riga for supplies is a good one.

If you think about it, that is probably the optimal route if you optimize for time and allow ferries, because the ferries will be much faster than walking and on this route there's little land....

Water skis + ferry = fast, free crossing. Or was it death? One or the other.

So, the sea has already lost its ice cover down there?
OUTLINE2010: PARTY ASH IF THERE IS NO TOMORROW!
Actually called the taxi centre and asked (I was bored). Helsinki - Eersel would be about 3100 euros, one way ;)

I really hate iceland. They have this lesser value complex by being a little inbreed shitty island who nobody cares about so they try everything they can to get our attention. Sucky emo artists, building economique bubbles, crying about the crysis said bubble brought on them, claim the discoverd america, and now this. wtf
fuck iceland. really. fuck them
