Commercial/game-engine demos

category: general [glöplog]
smash: thats what i tried to say as well. once, long ago, i had this utopian idea that demosceners were knowledgeable. now maybe only 10% isn't talking out of their ass, if not less.

threads like these should die on the spot. blargh.

If you'd said 1k intros, 256byte intros or cracktros etc I would agree, but many 4k intros ARE full featured productions these days.

and by full featured you mean nearly passable audio, feasible colors and generated geometry thats a tiny bit more interesting than a bunch of cubes?

don't get me wrong - i'm more than impressed with what people do in 4k these days (even though most of the raymarching attempts are just subpar) but comparing it to a good demo is nonsense.

can't we just stop COMPARING for a change and let everyone do what they like? (saying this for the third time now..)

for some reason many people think making smaller productions means it's harder to do.

4k`s are just a bunch of viruses attempting to destroy our computahs, they should be banned.

Niels: I'm sorry you feel that way, but I was actually posing a question to hear what people _other than myself_ felt about it. Since a prod popped up that was the perfect example the question was easy enough: ok, or not ok (from a compo perspective)? Since everyone seems to feel it's perfectly okay, then that's the answer then. I don't see why asking the question makes me speak out of my ass OR why the question itself doesn't have a right to life, but then again I'm not a coder. So far, only Kusma has given a decent answer as to why it doesn't matter at all.

gloom: i thought i didn't have to explicitly state that i a) don't think you are stupid and b) don't think your initial post was stupid or useless.

its the rest of the content. not your fault.

Niels: *hugs* :)

ps: That's actually quite interesting, at least from a game-compo and machinima perspective. Some pretty sweet tech there, just waiting to be (ab)used ;)

gargaj, laziness is a virtue ;)

what a dilemma.

wade, so how many 4ks you did code and why do you think coding a 1k or 256b intro is for lazy people? you should stop talking about things you haven't got the slighest clue about.

You should know what they say about lazy coders...

But anyway i'm with smash here. Size coding just brings another challenges that I personally find much boring than the ones in bigger productions. Also I feel that size coding limits my creativity too much.

gargaj, just wait for the lossless fullhd video download like the rest of us with ATI. it'll be added soon here where the previous parts are already available.
added on the 2009-11-09 16:48:35 by nosfe nosfe
why would i download a bloated video version of something that could run on my computer if someone would fix about two lines of code?

I just discovered lots of democoders have been using these 3d graphics libraries called OpenGL and Direct3D!

Disqualify everyone!

go make a software-demo about it!

wondering why it took 5 pages to say it!
GPUs are for lamers!

And more seriously, I agree with most of what's been said:
-most important is to have fun doing it, even if that means using python or drakBasic or UDK
-the scene has a great 'self regulation' power: less efforts=down voting, but using existing engines != less efforts automatically
-game engine ARE limited, and made for large worlds with many actors and AI and controls and networking and physics... might not be the most suited solution :)

You keep saying I have no clue, but you're not backing it up with any logic. Saying something repeatedly doesn't suddenly make it true.

haha, sauli's argument was on my mind too :)
pommak: your 4k comment is epic stupidity.

farfar: why? it's not really disrespectful or anything. once again: taste, personal experience, personal idea of fun et cetera.
