Help to convert a MOD into MIDI

category: general [glöplog]

I got a lot of MOD songs from maktone, that i want to convert into MIDI. How can i do this without geting it played on a piano?

Anybody want to teach me?

the piano is the default instrument in general midi, so when you convert a mod to midi it probably assigns everything to the piano by default. Use some midi software/sequencer to reassign the instruments ("patches") of the midi into something other than a piano.

mod doesn't convert well to midi in general (depending on the tune), as they are totally different musical formats. The results can't be guaranteed

why would you want to convert a mod to midi anyways? as i understood from what you wrote, you don't seem to want to do any further touches to it.

just out of interest, i once wanted to make cellphone-ringtones out of my old mods, until i noticed i'm better off doing it all new from scratch again.

Right click on the file name, then choose "rename." A cursor will appear allowing you to delete the ".MOD" extension, which should then be changed to the ".MID" extension. Hit the "enter" key and Windows should instantly recognize the file as MIDI.
thom: yep, you're a genius XD

This is pretty much pointless anyway.

A real conversion isn't possible. A truckload of vital information is getting lost. In 99% of cases you'll be left with some sound mishmash, which has not much to do with the original file and how it sounds like.

There's a MOD2MIDI utility, and MIDI files can be converted to MUS. Take a look at Doom level editor websites, there are plenty, because Doom used MUS files.

Modplug Tracker can do it, and you can assign instruments to the... instruments, too.

2midi is brilliant. it emulates almost all effects.
if you have a soundblaster it even makes soundfonts from the file, so all you have to do after conversion is load the soundfont and load the midi file.

it even emulates sample offset in a really clever way. it turns off the volume, plays the sample at high speed until its at the right position (using pitchwheel), puts it to the right frequency and turns on the volume. pretty neat.

i've tried about any mod to midi convertor around, but none even comes close to the power of 2midi.
give it a try!
