- 64k Windows Beyond by Conspiracy [web]
- firstly, it certainly does weird buggy things. like on my athlon1800+ with gf4ti4200, only the bottom half of the screen is visible (the rest is black) and there are also some black squares over some of the rest of it. for the whole intro (from loading bar onwards).
seems to need more memory than the 256mb ive got as well.. =) like a lot of swapping goes on. oh, and it seems to eat fill rate.
apart from that, the texgen seems really good, a lot better than the project genesis one, its superb. the synth also seems better. generally it looks very pretty. nice design, camerawork etc, and very clean look (except for the bugs of course).
looking forward to breakpoint 64k compo now.. =) - rulezadded on the 2004-01-25 16:01:52
- diskmag Windows Sunray 99 by Sunray Staff [web]
- this really was great, its a shame there wasnt a sunray2000, 2001 etc.

- 64k Windows Point Blank by Stockholm Syndrome [web]
- on one hand, there's nothing new here at all, it doesnt take the technical standard of 64ks forward or something like that.
however, it really is damn well polished.
its got a lot of nice little touches, e.g. like the alpha to blend in the reflections (many wouldnt have bothered), and the dusty effect on the "volumetric" beams. it just looks very polished and pretty.
the look of the thing is nice and coherent too. who cares if the colour scheme is a cop out, it looks great anyway. pretty good for codergfx =)
criticisms - the post filters and the city scene are both slower than they should be. also there's no animation except for cameras.
i'd love it if this was the last of the big fr08-esque industrial flyby intros - this is a good one to stop with. (any correllation between the number of industrial scenes in intros and the suitability of modelling them with primitives?). of course, it probably wont be, and we'll see another 10 copies that arent as good, but here's hoping anyway.

- 64k Windows Impulse from Nowhere by Digital Devotion
- i saw the first scene, before it spectacularly crashed my pc with a load of corrupted shit on the screen, requiring a reboot. fuckings for that, at least.
before that happened, what i saw was some reasonably decent 3d and animation for a 64k, but really incredibly appalling textures and bad music. and then there's the renderer.
the weird thing here is that you got a quite hard part right (the 3d and animation works), yet forgot to do all the comparatively very easy bits (like hm, lighting?).
oh, and was the frustum culling code really so bugged as to require providing different exes with and without?
time to go away for a while and fix your rendering code, guys, then come back with something decent.

- 64k Windows Hell in Heaven by Razor 1911 [web]
- terrible blur effect, poor objects/movement, bad music. the syncs were accurate, at least, well done for that i guess.
the only real positive i gained from this from squinting and trying to pretend i was watching ADITS. unfortunately, i wasnt.
party production or not, its just bad, sorry. - isokadded on the 2003-12-08 11:43:09
- 64k Windows the secret life of plants by Fairlight [web]
- damn, looks like this made it here in the end..
<excuse>
here's what happened:
- we made a load of nice tools (mesheditor, texturegenerator, softsynth)
we wanted to test the tools in a quick little intro, to make sure they work nicely together (rather than try to make something big, and find that they didnt).
reed made a very nice tune for it. unfortunately i didnt spend enough time on the visuals (the intro was made very quickly), but we decided to release anyway.
regrettably, its fucking boring. if it had 3 times as much content and the visuals fitted with the music (and an actual artist had done the gfx), it might have been ok.
as for it not working: if your card supports pixelshader 1.1 and vertexshader 1.1, it should be ok. i didnt use anything non-standard, and didnt have any driver problems myself. plus, i didnt code any fallbacks because im a bad person, sorry.
if you get weird looking results or have any msg boxes come up (if you do, its fucked), please do send bug reports, cos i want to fix them for next time.
anyway, as reed said in the compo: its a tools test, expect some real intros from us soon :)

- demo Windows schism by Noice [web]
- noice are great at code+effects. the 3d text fx (the blocks one and the metas one) were very nice, and the hair, depth of field, all impressive. the bumped stuf looked good too.
needs better design - not just rotating objects with one effect after another - and some better artwork. maybe next time? =)
but in the end this is an effect show, and the important part (the effects themselves) were very good.

- 64k Windows In Space by Fairlight [web]
- if you're getting this error its because your card doesnt support a rendertarget with the format d24 s8, a depthbuffer format, which i use for depthbuffer shadowmapping. it works on gf3-4, seems to not work at all on matrix parhelia, trying to find a usable format for radeons now. anyone know one that works on ati cards?
so, erm, hold on a while

- 64k Windows In Space by Fairlight [web]
- some notes about this:
- it fucked up bigstyle when it was played during the compo, the water scene in the middle was replaced with a nice view of the zbuffer :) and the city scene only the specular pass was shown, no light + shadow pass, so looked weird. it turned out the drivers on the compo machine caused this, we got some possibly more stable earlier ones installed and it worked fine, they replayed it just after the compo (thanks ryg) and all was ok.. unfortunately everyone was outside by then boozing, doh =)
- much of the work was dodgy buggy party coding :D handed it in 2 minutes before the intro compo deadline, the ending totally bugs (obviously my script goes to hell near the end), we had to abuse the music a bit to get under the size limit in time for the compo, sorry reed =)
- willbe made the turntable scene very quickly and late on at the party, thanks man =)
- will release a bugfix in the next couple of days to fix the obvious real howlers, maybe a final sometime later (we had to cut out a lot of material cos we were over the size limit with a couple of hours to go, DOH)
anyway.. erm.. no more party coding for me, just party boozing from now on =)

- diskmag Windows WorldCharts #15 by The Silents [web] & Scoopex [web] & Hoodlum [web]
- good prod again =) best charts mag of course..
on the voting:
yeh, i think we all (even us fairlight guys who benefitted from it) realise that the chart positions on best group charts are a little bogus.
i dont think its so much warez sceners or self voting (surely nobody does it? far too lame) as perhaps a lot of friends of the groups voting.
but that said, if you're unhappy about it, the best thing to do is a) go and vote yourself and b) spread the word to all the sceners you can find, and get them to vote too. the more sceners that vote, the more representative and "accurate" the voting is. if you dont do that.. then.. not much room to complain, is there? =)
